Today’s Services 8.00am Holy Communion

9.30am Sung Eucharist 11.30 am Holy Baptism (Harry George Hocking)

Preacher: The Rev’d Sam Goodes Celebrant: The Rev’d Helen Gibson-White

A special welcome to all who are worshipping with us for the first time or visiting us today. We especially welcome those visiting us from other

areas. Please join us for a cup of tea or coffee after the service.

Before the Service begins please read the following: In the Church’s calendar, the fourth Sunday in Lent is a special day. (Lent is the season of 40 days before Easter) This Sunday in Lent became known as Mothering Sunday, or Refreshment Sunday when servants were allowed to return to their hometowns to go to Church with their mothers. Also, the practice of baking Simnel cakes arose to celebrate the reuniting of families during the austerity of Lent. Traditionally this Sunday saw a relaxation of the Lenten fast, and so is sometimes named Refreshment Sunday. You may wish to take a piece of Simnel cake today for your own mother or god-mother, or because you are a mother!

Sentence of the Day:

The Son of Man must be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life. John 3.14-15

Prayer of the Day Everlasting God in whom we live and move and have our being, you have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in you: give us purity of heart and strength of purpose, that no selfish passion may hinder us from knowing your will, no weakness prevent us from doing it; that in your light we may see light, and in your service find perfect freedom; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Readings Numbers 21.4-9 OT p. 131

Numbers is the fourth book of the bible, so called because it starts with numbering (taking a census of) the people of Israel. It relates what the Israelites experience as they wander through the wilderness on the way to the Promised Land. These experiences teach them to rely on God, not their own resources. When they rebel, they are punished with the appearance of snakes. But God provides the snake on the pole to heal them and remind them of their past lack of faith, in order to help them keep on track with God.

Psalm 107.1-3, 17-22 APBA p. 337 This psalm of thanksgiving celebrates several instances when faith was tested and God’s grace relieved the situation, a fitting response to the experience of the Israelites in the first reading. The opening calls us to praise (vss. 1-3, while the particular segment contained in vss. 17-22 focuses on the healing of a serious illness.

Ephesians 2.1-10 NT p. 178 In this articulation of Paul’s thought, this passage highlights how reliant on God’s grace we are to become what we are made to be, that is, creatures of generosity and love, people of ‘good works.’ The abundant grace of God helps us become gracious, which is not something we can do ourselves, but relies on God’s initiative and love made real through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

John 3.14-21 NT p. 87 In this passage, the writer of John’s Gospel plays on the double meaning of ‘lifted up’ in typical fashion. He uses what may have already been a traditional association between Jesus’ death and the snakes in the wilderness. Jesus is like the bronze snake which Moses fashioned and put on a pole. When people looked to it they were healed (Numbers 21:4-9). ‘Lifted up’ is wonderfully ambiguous. He will be lifted up on a cross. He will also be lifted up/exalted to God’s presence. Jesus will declare in 12:32, ‘I, if I am lifted up, will draw all people to me’, part of next week’s reading.

Musi Processional: 222 For the beauty of the earth Gradual: God is Love (words below) Offertory: Our Father God (words p. 6) Communion: 313 Such love Post Communion:149 Guide me, O thou great Redeemer Music Setting: Chris Chataway. Organist: Ian Gray

God is Love (A&M 644)

1. God is Love: let heav’n adore him; God is love: let earth rejoice; let creation sing before him, and exalt him with one voice. He who laid the earth’s foundation, he who spread the heav’ns above, he who breathes through all creation, he is Love, eternal Love.

2. God is Love, and he enfoldeth all the world in one embrace; with unfailing grasp he holdeth every child of every race; and when human hearts are breaking under sorrow’s iron rod, then they find that selfsame aching deep within the heart of God.

3. God is Love: and though with blindness sin afflicts the souls of all, God’s eternal loving-kindness holds and guides us when we fall Sin and death and hell shall never o’er us final triumph gain; God is love, so Love for ever o’er the universe must reign. Timothy Rees (1874–1939)

Our father God in heaven (A&M 138)

1. Our father God in heaven on whom our world depends. to you let praise be given for families and friends; for parents, sisters, brothers, a home where love belongs, but on this day for mothers we bring our thankful songs.

2. What wealth of God’s bestowing for all the world to share! what strength of heart outgoing to children everywhere! Our deepest joys and sorrows a mother’s path must trace, and earth’s unknown tomorrows Are held in her embrace.

3. How well we know the story that tells of Jesus’ birth, the Lord of heaven’s glory become a child of earth; a helpless infant sleeping, yet King of realms above, to find in Mary’s keeping the warmth of human love.

4. Our Father God in heaven, to you we lift our prayer, that every child be given such tenderness and care, where life is all for others, where love your love displays: for God’s good gift of mothers let earth unite in praise!

Notices At St Andrew’s

KNITTING YARN: The group which knits toys and beanies for Anglicare is again seeking knitting yarn; 8 ply is preferable but any ply would be welcomed. We thank all those who donated previously as this assisted us to produce more than 150 toys last year, in addition to beanies and small jumpers. Please contact me at 8344 6287 or at [email protected] if you can assist with this and I will collect from you, or alternatively, leave at the back of the church. Joan Beer

MOTHERS’ UNION BANNER: “This banner was worked by the members of the Mothers’ Union of St. Andrew’s, Walkerville, and was dedicated during the celebration for the Church’s ninetieth birthday in August last. The design was made by Miss Mabel Prosser, after consultation with a committee from the branch and was transferred to a very fine canvas for working a tapestry...... Members had it in turn and each did a piece. It was a year and more months in the making and contains 17,000 stitches. The back of the banner is dark blue, with a white St. Andrew’s cross and lettering. The brass cross which tops the pole was made by a husband of a Mother’s Union member”. This article was published in The Adelaide Church Guardian 1938 with photograph on the front cover, recently found by Sandy Facy. Seventy years later, the banner is on display to mark Mothering Sunday, the 4th Sunday in Lent. It depicts Madonna and Child in a Spring garden, with the tower of St. Andrew’s in the background. This banner is now eighty years old! While the Mothers’ Union Branch has not met here for many years, we still have people who bake Simnel Cake for this occasion. Thank you Denise Miller and Judith Rischbieth.
