Angels Candle The fourth and last purple candle, often called the Angels Candle, represents peace and is lit on the fourth Sunday of Advent. Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, "Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests." (Luke 2:13–14, NIV) Before your birth, Oh Lord, the angelic hosts looked on this mystery and were struck with wonder. A Prayer for Peace Almighty God, We bless you for our lives, we give you praise for your abundant mercy and grace we receive. We thank you for your faithfulness. Lord Jesus, we ask you to give us peace in our mind, body, soul and spirit. We want you to heal and remove stress, grief, and sorrow in our lives. Please guide our path through life and help our enemies be at peace with us. Let your peace reign in our family, at our place of work, businesses and everything we lay our hands on. Let your angels of peace go ahead of us when we go out and stay by our side. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen. This Week’s Meetings and Activities

Christmas Eve Dinner Prayer Loving Father, help us remember the birth of Jesus,

that we may share in the song of the angels, the gladness of the shepherds, and worship of the wise men. Close the door of hate and open the door of love all over the world. Let kindness come with every gift and good desires with every greeting. Deliver us from evil by the blessing which Christ brings, and teach us to be merry with clear hearts. May the Christmas morning make us happy to be thy children, and Christmas evening bring us to our beds with grateful thoughts, forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus' sake. Amen. — Robert Louis Stevenson

Christmas Prayer Give us, O God, the vision which can see thy love in the world in spite of human failure. Give us the faith to trust the goodness in spite of our ignorance and weakness. Give us the knowledge that we may continue to pray with understanding hearts, and show us what each one of us can do to set forth the coming of the day of universal peace. Amen. — Frank Borman Now the Work of Christmas Begins When the song of the angels is stilled, when the star in the sky is gone, when the kings and princes are home, when the shepherds are back with the flocks, then the work of Christmas begins: To find the lost, to heal those broken in spirit, to feed the hungry, to release the oppressed, to rebuild the nations, to bring peace among all peoples, to make a little music with the heart. And to radiate the Light of Christ, every day, in every way, in all that we do and in all that we say. Then the work of Christmas begins. — Howard Thurman

March For Life

This year St. Ferdinand will join with Holy Redeemer and St. Gregory (from our Parish Grouping) in sponsoring a bus trip to the 47th annual March for Life in Washington, D.C. on Friday, January 24. We really need strong Parish Grouping participation to fill the bus. The bus will depart from St. Ferdinand following morning Mass. For those that are physically unable to March, the bus will also will make a stop at the National Shrine for a day of prayer (assuming at least 6 pilgrims choose this option). For more information contact Bill at 724.772.7962 or visit https://stferd.org/upcoming-events. Scripture Study with our Priests

Please join us on Monday, January 6, at 7:00 pm in church for a scripture study. One of our priests will lead a scripture study that will take us a little deeper into the Sunday Gospel. Discover the beauty of scripture and grow in your relationship with Christ as father explains and answer questions about the week’s Gospel. All are welcome.

Prayer of Consecration to the Holy Family

The St. Ferdinand Parish Knights of Columbus Council will sponsor the first annual Prayer of Consecration to the Holy Family on Holy Family Sunday, December 29. The goals of this effort are to consecrate each of our parish families to the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, and to encourage all of our parish families to pray often to the Holy Family and to imitate the life of the Holy Family. Consecration prayer cards will be distributed on Sunday, December 22, and Sunday, December 29, in the church. You can prepare for this Consecration by participating in the Sunday Mass, going to Confession this month, praying together, praying the Rosary, and fasting or offering a sacrifice during Advent. Please take cards home for every member of your family, and pray the prayer together on Sunday, December 29. Also, the Knights will invite all those participating in the 10:00 am Mass on Holy Family Sunday, December 29, to pray this Consecration together with Father Torquato, their council chaplain, during the Liturgy.

Trust In God On this final Sunday of Advent our

scriptures focus on the historical birth of Jesus, who is son of David and Son of God, child and king, Jesus and Emmanuel. Isaiah the prophet begs Ahaz to ask for a sign, to allow God to offer him reassurance of the survival of the Davidic dynasty. The king hypocritically refuses to “tempt the LORD” in that way (Isaiah 7:12), but the prophet foretells the birth of a son, an heir to the throne, who will prove the Lord’s enduring protection of God’s chosen lineage on the throne of David. The child will be called Emmanuel. Matthew’s reference to this history in his description of the birth of Jesus highlights the contrast between the faithless refusal of trust shown by Ahaz, and the complete trust in God shown by Mary and Joseph in bringing about the birth of Jesus Christ. The Gospel of Luke

The Thursday evening Bible Study group will begin a new program on January 9, The Gospel of Luke. Luke’s Gospel demonstrates the universal nature of Jesus’s mission and the compassion of God. The eleven sessions of this Bible study will take the reader from the infancy narratives of John the Baptist, to Jerusalem, where Jesus will enter into his passion and resurrection. Luke’s focus on God’s faithfulness will encourage you to trust.

The Thursday evening Bible Study meets at 7:00pm in the Upper Room. If you have questions or would like to join us, please contact Kathy at 724.776.1357 or email at [email protected].

St. Peregrine Prayer

St. Peregrine is the patron saint of cancer patients. You are invited to join others to pray to St. Peregrine to intercede on your behalf with our Lord

in Heaven to bring His healing grace to you, or those dear, who may be suffering the anguish of cancer or other traumatic illnesses. Meet in the church at 7:00 pm on Monday, December 23.

Food Bank at St. Ferdinand Gleaners Food Bank, at St. Ferdinand, is a non-profit, non-

denominational organization that provides food to Cranberry Township residents in need. The word glean means to collect bit by bit. Gleaner’s can provide for the needy only through the generosity of our community. This would not be possible without the volunteers who generously give of their time and effort to collect, sort and distribute the food donations received to over 100 families monthly.

We receive food from Butler County each month and are able to supplement this food with local donations. In addition, we stock our shelves bit by bit with contributions from our parishioners and local food drives along with monetary donations for perishable items.

Donations can be made to the food bank any time by dropping off non-perishable, non-expired items, paper products, and personal hygiene items in the box in the Narthex. Monetary donations are made by sending a check payable to Gleaners Food Bank to St. Ferdinand and can be done in memory or in honor of someone.

In emergency situations, food is available at the Parish Office. Applications for food bank clients are available in the Parish Office of St. Ferdinand Church. Food is distributed from 9:00-10:00 am on the last Wednesday of the month, earlier in November and December due to the holidays. Additional Parking

We ask all parishioners and visitors to park in designated parking spaces for the safety of the people, the access of emergency vehicles, and for regular flow of traffic. Overflow vehicles may use the municipal building parking lot.

Life Between Sundays Our parish is a busy place and not just on Sunday mornings. During

the week, our kitchen hums as volunteers prepare meals for the homeless and Fish Frys during Lent. In a workroom, our God’s Precious Preemies knit clothing for pre-mature infants. In the hall, many hands cut, decorate and sew comfort blankets. We have choir rehearsals and prayer groups. The Gardening Angels continually work to beautify the landscape and plant food for the food bank. In the Education Building, we have religious education classes for children, adults and youth ministry. Numerous volunteers prepare for the festival. There are many organizations and ministries for men and women; too many to name them all. It is all people doing what they love and doing it for the good of others.

God has given each of us talents or skills, not just for our own use but for the benefit of all. The ease of its burden is that God asks us to give what we have and not take on something we are not. It is the joy and satisfaction we experience in contributing the work we love for the good of our families, our church, and our community. So with hope and promise, may we hitch up our skills and talents and take on Jesus’ work of creating the Kingdom of God. These ministries will offer you spiritual enrichment and help if needed, or you can volunteer to help those in need. You are invited to join and benefit from our many ministries.

Bringing Your Child to Church Have you ever been to a Baptism in Catholic Mass? One of the things we agree to do as a congregation is to raise these children in the Catholic Faith and to encourage their parents to do the same. It is a heavy responsibility that God puts on parents. A blessing and a joy, but also challenging. This is why we as a parish NEED to support families with children. The hardest part of going to Mass with children is for the parents to prepare their heart, mind, and soul for what is about to happen. Knowing that they are supported by the parishioners at St. Ferdinand makes all the baths, fighting to get clothes on the kids, and rushing to load them into the van, much more of a joy. I can’t tell you how many times we have held babies and helped parents with small children. It’s a fun way to meet people and make them feel welcome. First impressions are everything. I have heard from plenty of parents that felt their children were not welcome visiting certain parishes. That is a horrible feeling. When parents know they are welcome no matter how crazy/normal their kids are going to act… that’s a church worth sticking with. The parishioners at St. Ferdinand Parish would like you to feel comfortable when you bring your child to Mass. Children learn to participate in the liturgical and sacramental life of our parish by observing others worship. We understand that children may need a snack to help keep them settled during Mass. Please be sure the snacks are not left on the floor for the ants. If a child cannot be settled, there is a Children’s Chapel, Nursery, or a Children’s Liturgy Room in the back of the church where they may feel more comfortable. You and your family are a witness of God’s love for the parish. Every time you lovingly care for your family you help other parishioners feel God’s love. We are grateful to you for showing us all how important God is in your life. Thank you for having your children be part of our faith family. ~ blag
