From the Pastor
Dear Parishioners,
I liked the second reading this weekend: 1Thessalonians 5:16-24 I would like to have preached on that also but, I get it, there should only be one homily. Anyway, the part I like is “Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophetic utterances. Test everything;
retain what is good. Refrain from every kind of evil.” As I said in my introduction to the reading, this is basic Scriptural discernment. Entire books have been written about discernment and people offer complex processes. I think it is much simpler than that; test everything, retain what is good (from the Spirit of God), refrain from (discard) every kind of evil (all that is from a spirit of evil). This idea is repeated in 1 John 4:1 “Beloved, do not trust every spirit but test the spirits to see whether they belong to God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”
The question, now, is, how do we tell what is from a spirit of evil and what is from God’s Spirit? M. Scott Peck, in his book “Children of the Lie” tells that his child informed him the “evil” is “live” spelled backwards. He says, if it is good, it is life oriented and if it is evil, it is oriented toward destruction and death. I kind of like that as a general guide.
For example, my discernment is that all the things in our current society which tend to pit us, one against the other, are from a spirit of evil. Division is de- structive and death dealing. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be individuals but, we should be individual working together to create a better society. God’s Spirit is a spirit of communion.
When Paul said not to “quench the Spirit” and do not despise “prophetic utterances”. He was probably talking about not prohibiting the charismatic gifts of the Spirit, out of hand. He did say to test them, though, so he is not saying that all claims to prophetic utterances are true. In our day and time, I would apply Paul’s comments to preaching and written communications of spiritual leaders.
For example, some people have been upset about things I have said or written, and some people are upset about things Pope Francis has said or written. That’s O.K. I try to preach the Gospel and not let my own feelings dilute or change God’s Word, but I’m not perfect. You should test it, like Paul says.
We should all be careful though that we are not throwing out God’s Word, out of hand like some in Paul’s audience were evidently doing. Test everything to see if it is from God’s Spirit. If it is from God’s Spirit, even if we don’t initially like it, we must accept it. That is one way to let God change us.
I pray that we all take Paul seriously and take everything in, test it and retain what is good.
In His Service,

GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTURE December 24, 2017 4th Sunday of Advent "Behold, you will conceive in your womb and bear a son, and you shall name him Jesus." Today is the last Sunday of the Advent season, and we hear in the Gospel the anticipation of the feast we will celebrate in just one day. Christmas is com- ing! Jesus is on his way! We have had weeks to prepare for this momentous occasion, and now we are on the very verge of its arrival. The children in our midst can hardly contain their excitement as they wait to wake up on Christmas morning. The thrill of this com- ing moment is meant to remind us of the joy and anticipation we should all feel as we await the coming of Christ. Yes, Christmas is a great feast, but there is more here than a remembrance of the past or a fabulous party in the present. There is a looking-ahead as well. We celebrate as we anticipate. Much as Mary must have waited in wonder during the nine months of her preg- nancy, we wait in hopeful expectation as Christians looking forward to being reu- nited with our Savior. Our future is full of hope. The deflating melancholy that afflicts many people after a holiday runs its course need not be the experience of the Christian waiting for Christ. We are always looking forward to something! There is never a moment when we have no cause for joy. Our lives are lived in a kind of unending advent as we stand in watchful waiting. Let us remember this as we enter into our Christmas Eve gatherings and festivi- ties. As we join with family and friends to share in the good things of this life, may we carry with us the joy of knowing that even better things lie in store for us who welcome the infant Jesus into our hearts and homes.
LIVE THE LITURGY - INSPIRATION FOR THE WEEK Mary said: "Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me accord- ing to your word." A simple trust in God's word allowed the Mother of God to do incredible things. As a humble servant and listener, she embraced her mission and invested herself wholeheartedly in doing what God had asked. Do we know and trust that we are being led? Often, we can feel very much alone and without a source of inspiration, guidance, and love to enlighten our path. God is with us. This is the essential message of Advent and the truth revealed to us at Christmas. We are never alone. There is no need to fear. We too, with God's help, can do in- credible things.
WHY DO WE DO THAT? - CATHOLIC TRADITIONS EXPLAINED Question: Why do the Gospels differ in their details? I was surpr ised to learn that not all of the Gospels tell the same stories, for example, the Nativity. Doesn't this take away from their credibility? Answer: Take any event that happens, from family tr ips to national politics and ask two or three different people to explain what happened. You will get a different version of the same story. People tend to tell the story from their per- spective, and past experience shades what we recall and how we recall it. Our choice of words and what details we leave in or out is also influenced by the au- dience who is listening to our tales. The Gospel writers are no different. Each one tells the story of Jesus from their own perspective. Versions differ in some details, not because one is true and the other is not, but because each Gospel writer, or Evangelist, has a different theo- logical point to communicate as well as a different audience for whom he is writ- ing. He picks and chooses the details of his Gospel based on what message he is preaching, what his audience may already know, and what message they need to hear. The various details of the Gospels point more to their authenticity as a rec- ord of the church's experience and understanding of Jesus. In a good study Bible, the background notes for each Gospel contain a lot of information that helps us better understand each Evangelist and his message.
