GustoMSC offers design, engineering, project
management and consultancy services primarily
for the offshore oil and gas, and the civil
construction sectors, both new build,
conversion and upgrade projects.
The core business of GustoMSC is the
development of complete, tailor-made designs
for special vessels such as DP drillships and
pipelay/installation vessels, heavy duty offshore
cranes and crane vessels, mobile production,
storage and offloading units and offshore jack-
up platforms, including all calculations,
drawings and specifications necessary to obtain
Class approval.
FPSO projects
GustoMSC is in the unique position of having the in-
house capabilities needed to engineer complete
Floating Production Storage & Offloading (FPSO)
projects. These capabilities are:
Project Management
Engineering
- Naval architecture
- Structural & mechanical design
- Process & marine
- Piping & mechanical (rotating/static equipment)
- Electrical & instrumentation
Sourcing and purchasing
Site assistance and supervision.
The major benefit is that complete FPSO
engineering projects are managed by a multi-
disciplinary project team at a single location. As a
result all interfaces - human, cultural and technical -
can be better managed. The integrated approach
allows FPSO projects to be developed on a fast-
track schedule. Due to the rapid availability of
engineering documents the shipyard, the topsides
fabricators and equipment suppliers are able to start
their contribution much earlier than when working to
conventional project schedules.
The furthering of engineering documentation is
founded on a risk-based approach. First the most
critical project items are detailed, to allow the
subsequent project parties to start their work,
followed by the less critical systems and
components.
General equipment and systems specifications are
available early in the project, so as to allow the
Purchasing group to source potential suppliers and
obtain early technical input from suppliers. When the
basic engineering is completed sufficient information
is available to place purchase orders.
Many GustoMSC engineers have hands-on
construction experience, since the company
stimulates its engineers to provide assistance and
supervision during the conversion and building
phases of the project at the various locations
(shipyard, topsides fabricators, equipment
suppliers).
Specifics regarding the various FPSO and FSO units
are shown in the enclosed reference list.
Within the SBM Offshore Group, the development of
FPSO's and FSO's is a matter of close co-operation
between the three subsidiaries Single Buoy
Moorings, SBM Atlantia and GustoMSC.

Value
The two essential components of an FPSO - the
mooring system and the high-pressure swivel stack -
are the core business of SBM and SBM-IMODCO,
and they have an outstanding reputation in this field.
For FPSO projects SBM and SBM-IMODCO operate
as main contractor vis--vis the client. GustoMSC is
the designated engineering contractor for both
companies with in-house knowledge on tanker
conversion, marine systems, piping, E&I and topside
engineering.
To ensure that the designs incorporate fit-for-
purpose requirements, benefit is obtained from the
operational experience of SBM ProductionContractors, who operate a dozen FPSO's on
longterm lease for various clients.
Typical GustoMSC scope of work
The scope of work executed by GustoMSC for a
typical conversion comprises some 250 different
activities, divided into the following main groups:
Project management
Vessel survey
Collection and review of vessel documentation
Conversion and design calculations and drawings
Classification and Authority approval co-
ordination
Procurement services
Yard supervision
Manuals
As-built drawings
Specific equipment and systems for which
GustoMSC applies its engineering expertise are:
Ship's hull
Tank arrangements Accommodation
Helideck
Naval architectural calculations
Structural strength and fatigue analysis
Hydrodynamic analysis and simulations
Mooring system integration
Power generation and distribution facilities
Ship-related utility systems.
Safety systems
Engine room systems
Instrumentation and control systems
Cargo and ballast handling
Export metering
Oil and gas separation facilities
Oil stabilization
Gas treatment
Gas compression
Seawater injection facilities
Topside related utility systems
Flare systems
Tandem mooring systems
Stern discharge systems.
Apart from complete FPSO projects, GustoMSC is
also involved in the engineering of non-standardFPSO related systems.
For the Schiehallion FPSO we created a design for a
large internal turret of 16 m diameter, using our
patented bogie wheel configuration. For the FSO
'OKHA' we designed and delivered a large floating
hose storage and offloading reel. The hydraulically
driven winch with spooling device allows for the
hauling in, payout and storage of a 300 m floating
export hose.
