But the Spirit has moved him, so Je- sus tells them “No prophet is accepted in his own native place.” Prophets were the conscience of Isra- el, the growing edge of the heart of the people. Prophets by their very nature are called to shake people out of their complacency and to point out when something new is happening. Like the people of Nazareth, we might think we know Jesus. His words may not sound radical to us because our pre- conceptions have him in a box of our making. How can the prophet Jesus open us up to something new? Can you think of modern day prophets who chal- lenged people to be open to something radically new? Pope Saint John XXIII, Archbishop Oscar Romero, or maybe Dr. Martin Luther King? All of them, like Jesus, met with considerable resistance; two of them to the point of becoming assassinated. How do we close our minds to people who break our expectations of them? They asked, … “Isn’t this the son of Joseph? ” [Luke 4:22c]
The unexpected does not conform to routine. Jesus returns to his hometown and the people there see him as they always have, as the son of Joseph the carpenter. But the Spirit has moved him, so Je-sus tells them “No prophet is accepted in his own native place.” Prophets were the conscience of Isra-el, the growing edge of the heart of the people. Prophets by their very nature are called to shake people out of their complacency and to point out when something new is happening. Like the people of Nazareth, we might think we know Jesus. His words may not sound radical to us because our pre-conceptions have him in a box of our making. How can the prophet Jesus open us up to something new?

Parish Finance Council: Some of the people who guide the parish in stewarding our finances, who are behind the scenes and you may never notice them, need some help. There are supposed to be 7 members of the parish who assist the pastor & financial staff in discerning and guiding the parish resources. This is a delicate task and not just anyone can do it. Please pray that parish members may come forward and offer their services to help plan our budgets and prudently care for the parish plant. While Joe Woodruff has been our anchor as our grounds maintenance man, guiding the hands-on details of so many things, Linda Zechmann, Phil Suess, and John Butler (chair) continue to serve on the Finance Council. Could you or someone you know assist on this working council that meets 8 or 9 times a year? Please contact Fr. Bob or one of the mem-bers if you are interested.

Living the Eucharist: Our parish coordinating team for Living the Eucharist would like you to consider partici-pating in this faith formation program during the 6 weeks of Lent. We have ordered materials now so that we can form small groups and share the pilgrimage of Lent as a time to deepen our faith especially in regards to the readings of Lent and the depths of the Holy Eu-charist that we hope to discover and savor together. Rare Evangelization Training Opportunity: Our parish has been asked by the diocese to partake in an unusual training for Leaders in Evangelization in our parishes. Thank you, CCW! for hosting the reception for the Church Unity Service last Sunday afternoon. It was PERFECT! Twelve different churches were represented, extending our Christian fellowship and real connection with the larger Waycross church.
