Dear Parishioners,
This Thursday we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Ascension of Christ into Heaven. To the right is a
painting from the early 19th century, French-born, British artist , Ford Madox Brown. On the cover of the
bulletin is Pietro Perugina’ Ascension. Both are delicate, mystical and dramatic in their own ways. This
week we can pray with either image. Brown’s painting is captivating since Christ is ascending from a
darkened earth to a brilliantly illuminated heaven. The sun is setting, the storm has passed. Mary, Mary
of Magdala and John are in the middle, as they were the ones also at the foot of the Cross. The apostles
are kneeling in wonder and awe. The angels are “keeping on their toes” with strange poses to demon-
strate that they belong to unearthly realm.
On Ascension Thursday we look to the heavens, but also to our mission on earth. Many places of the
earth have become darkened by war, tyranny, and human trafficking. Even the church has suffered the
darkness and evil of abuse and many scandals. How much pain is in our families, the shades of these
forms of darkness casts a shadow upon our own hearts. But Jesus has placed us into the world at this
time, to pray for peace, to fight for renewal of the institution of the church, to be loving and forgiving in
families. We are called to teach the world about love. The mission of the church is beyond human
strength. The poor and simple apostles were called to bring Jesus’ message of love and that is the same
mission passed on to us.
We need the light from heaven to shine on our paths, that we might not fall in the darkness. With the
Eucharist as our Heavenly Food, may God help us to learn wisdom so that we may grow in discernment,
to really know good from evil, light from darkness; this is possible because the Lord said, “I am going
away, but I will not leave your orphans. I will be with you till the end of time.”
Peace, Fr. David
