RCIA 2014 In celebrating this month of Our Lady of Fatima’s visit to

St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, let us ask her motherly inter-

cession to draw souls to the Sacred Heart of her Son. The

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a journey of

conversion to God and what He intends for us. RCIA is the

processes by which persons who were never baptized, or

were baptized in another Christian tradition, become mem-

bers of the Catholic Church, a people on pilgrimage to our

Heavenly Father.

On Wednesday, August 20th at 7 pm, RCIA will offer the

opportunity for you to inquire about the process of entering

the Catholic Faith. Please note this will be a question and

answer session; you are not under any obligation to

join. No need to RSVP. Please come. We are anxious to

meet you. We will be meeting in the Bishop Wycislo Hall.

For information contact: Pat Westlund at 432-4348 or sfxa-

[email protected].

THROUGH ILLNESS & RECOVERY When you, a family member or fellow parishioner (if they

are agreeable) is admitted to Aurora Hospital, call the parish

office. It is not the policy of this hospital to contact your

home parish, even if they ask about your affiliation to a

church. Please note; in the event of an emergency they will

contact a priest. We know the importance of spiritual care

especially when you are ill. Allow your parish family to

“be there” for you. You may call Father and set up a time

for him to anoint you if you know a procedure is

forthcoming. While you are recovering in the hospital or

your home we will bring the Eucharist to you. Our visit will

be brief so as to respect your need to rest.

ROSARY IN THE GARDEN Join us every Tuesday evening for a rosary in

the garden behind the Cathedral Church.

STAFF DAY OF RETREAT

On July 16th, several staff members traveled to St.

Nazianz with Fr. Brian Belongia for a day of retreat at the

monastery. We started the day with a Byzantine Mass that

was a new way of experiencing liturgy. There were some

similarities to a Roman Catholic Mass, but there were many

differences as well. Everything is chanted and there is no

kneeling; only standing and sitting. The biggest difference

is in how one receives Holy Communion. The bread, which

is leavened, is dipped in the precious blood with a spoon

and the Abbot drops it in your mouth. The liturgy is the

Eastern Rite of the Catholic church that is in alignment with

the Pope. We need to understand that even though the

liturgy is different, it would fulfill a Sunday obligation

because it is Catholic.

Following Mass we joined the monks for a vegetarian

lunch. They observe fasting every Wednesday and Friday

so all their meals those days are vegetarian. One of their

monks, Fr. Moses, is a chef who prepares very delicious

meals. He also offers retreats centered on food.

After lunch, Abbot Nicholas gave us a talk which was

about the beginnings of Catholicism. After a short break

with coffee and scones, we got in our cars and visited St.

Gregory Church and the cemetery. Then we drove down-

town to see the community’s museum which is housed in

the old fire station. It was easy to see that this community

takes great pride in their history. After the museum we

drove a short distance out of town to visit the old seminary.

We were able to go inside the church, which unfortunately

has fallen into disrepair because no one is able to take it

over and repair it. The rest of the buildings have been con-

demned. Toward the back of the grounds is a cemetery

where previous priests of the Salvatorian Fathers of Faith

are buried. There is also a mausoleum where Fr. Ambrose

Oschwald, founder of St.Nazianz (named after St. Gregory

Nazianz) is buried. On the hill above this area is a small

quaint chapel that overlooks the beautiful countryside.

Upon our return to the retreat house, we had another

short break with coffee and scones after which Abbot gave

us talk about the East and West Catholic churches and then

opened the floor to questions. We had many and could have

spent much more time just asking him questions. What a

wealth of information from this gifted teacher.

Then we went in for Ninth Hour, quiet meditation time

to recite the Jesus Prayer to ourselves, and ended with

Vespers. This was followed by a silent supper as we

listened to Fr. Moses read scripture. After supper Abbot

took us to an old historic log cabin that belonged to an

undertaker. The cabin had been moved into town so the

community could restore it and take care of it.

Finally it was time to return home. most, if not all

of us, are thinking about returning to the monastery.

If you want to do a unique retreat, I highly

recommend Holy Resurrection Monastery in St. Nazianz..

The price is unbeatable, the food is incredible, and the

learning experience is priceless! For more information,

google Holy Resurrection Monastery. Sonia Hitt
