Student Voice
Max Beavan and Damien Anderson are writing for our newsletter
this week. They are talking about our amazing Coles Community
Bag Competition winners and Naidoc Week celebrations.
Damien:
Max:
Franklin’s last Footsteps lesson was
held last Friday – there was lots of
excitement from students regarding the
performance in Week 10 of this term.
Costume notes should have been sent
home last week. Please make sure your
child’s costumes are labelled with their
names and are sent in to your child’s
class teachers by Week 5 of this term.
Naidoc week was celebrated by
Franklin students last Wednesday 24th.
Stage 3 classes participated in ‘the
game with no name’, Tuba Tuba and
Merkolap in rotation.
Stage 2 students did traditional rock
painting, made wristbands and entered
the art poster competition.
Stage 1 students participated in the
circle champ – Wiradjuri language for
numbers and Twister – using the
Wiradjuri language.
Kindergarten did hand art and learning the Wiradjuri language with Bec and Pat Connolly. Little Possums Early Childhood came across and participated in these activities with the Kinder classes as well.
Franklin students have completed our art works with Mrs Wood which will be displayed at the Fiveways Art Studio next week. All students will have an art work on display and parents are encouraged to come down to the Fiveways and see the display. Franklin students will be going down by bus on Tuesday with their class teachers.
We have had a busy first week in class
this term doing whole numbers in
Maths. We also had to write a recount
of our school holiday activities. I
managed to fill almost three pages
with the fun things I did on the
holidays.
Staff from Coles Tumut came to our
school to present us with 2 cheques for
$5000 each for our winners of the
Coles Community Bag Competition.
Our winners, Lucy, Anelise and Bobbie-
Lee won two of the eight national
prizes which is amazing. I interviewed
Lucy about her winning bag art.
How did you get the idea for your
drawing? Lucy said “Mrs Myers gave us
an idea that we should draw something
involving fruit and vegetables and I
thought of a farm because that’s where
our food comes from.”
What did you think when you won? “I
was really surprised because there were
lots of entries from all over the country.
I didn’t expect that my drawing would
win at all.”
What are you going to do with your
$500 prize money? “I am going to put it
in the bank and use some of it to get
my ears pierced”. Nice work Lucy!
CELEBRATING FRANKLIN!
TOGETHER WE LEARN
The theme for this year’s Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book Week is ‘Reading is my Secret Power’.
This term we will be celebrating Book Week in conjunction with Education Week in week 3.
Book Week aims to provide incentives to writers, illustrators and publishers to produce children’s literature of the highest
standards. All of the shortlisted books for 2019 will be displayed in the library during Book Week—please call in and have
a look! Lots of lunchtime fun to be had in the library, come and join us!
Dates to Remember:
Monday, August 5th—our book fair will open in the library. Children will write their wish lists on Friday 2nd
August.
Tuesday, August 6th—we will be holding a character parade in the hall, so please come dressed as your fa-
vourite book character.
From The Library!
Coles Community Bag Competition
Congratulations to our three students, Lucy
Swan, Anelise Van Ginkel and Bobbie-Lee
Foster who designed winning bags in the
Coles Community Bag Competition. There
were 8 winners nationally and for our small
school to win 2 of them is an amazing
achievement. As a result of our students
winning, Franklin received 2 prize cheques
for $5000 each. Thank you to the staff from
Coles Tumut who came to present us with
our prize. Well done Lucy, Anelise and Bob-
bie-Lee—great effort by Franklin students.

What’s happening at Tumut School’s As Community Centres:
What a fabulous first week of playgroups for term 3! The children let their creativity flow at the collage station and modified their cutting skills. They also used letter stampers to construct their names, which is fantastic for letter and name recognition. I was truly impressed by how many children
knew their letters! Next week we’ll be exploring the magic of fairy tales and investigating wooden musical instruments.
Everyone is welcome to come along to playgroup at SaCC it’s completely free and lots of fun for all. Please call Laura on 69476961 or check out our
Facebook page for more information.

This week Franklin School received two phone calls regarding our
students on Radio News—Jessica Martin and Maddie Piper.
James Hayes, our mayor, called our school and said “Franklin
Radio News was fantastic. Congratulations to students and staff
for the outstanding Radio News”. We also had a call from a
member of the public, Karin Garner, who said she couldn’t stop
listening because our students were so engaging. Well done Jess
and Maddie—we are proud of our students accomplishments.
