in the blistering Texas heat, hurry over to the parking lot for four more hours worth of marching practice, take a quick break for dinner and then head back to the field house for a second round of intense practice.
For Devin Castaneda, Jacob Dittmar and Cullen Eckert — three upperclass-men at Fredericksburg High School — that routine dom-inated their lives for three weeks in August as they pre-pared simultaneously to take the field at FHS Stadium as
starters on the varsity football team and as members of the FHS band.
“It felt like the days just went on and on, just one thing after another and then you got Sundays off,” Ditt-mar, who plays on the line on the football field and baritone in the band, said. “Sundays were very short because I was sleeping so much those days.”

head coach and athletic direc-tor Lance Moffett knows all about multitasking as a high school player.
“In my opinion, they’re learning good life skills because they’re learning the skills it takes to be able to manage a wife, a life, a job and kids,” he said. “It’s a good testament to what life’s going to be like and those kids thrive.”
In addition to playing line-backer for his high school team, Moffett served as FFA president, showing steers and lambs throughout the state.

Throw that four-game win-ning streak out the window.
The Fredericksburg High School varsity football team is resetting their record at 0-0 this Friday night as they host Canyon Lake at FHS Stadi-um at 7:30 p.m. for the Dis-trict 27-3A opener for both schools.
Though a 4-1 non-district record has worked wonders for his team’s confidence, Fredericksburg head coach Lance Moffett said Mon-day everything that the Bil-lies have worked for will be for naught if they cannot keep their momentum going through district play.
“Since the Saturday after Llano, we’ve talked about how 4-1 does not mean any-thing unless we do something with it,” Moffett said. “4-1 is insignificant because it’s non-district. It doesn’t count. It

Finishing its fall season with a win yesterday (10-2 over Hondo,) the Fredericksburg High School var-sity tennis team boosted its season record to 17-2 and is now ranked third in Texas among Class 3A teams.
Rankings were issued Oct. 5 by the Texas Tennis Coaches Associa-tion showing the Billie netters in third place, ahead of Wimberley in fourth and Center in fifth and trail-ing Abilene Wylie in first and Lam-pasas in second.
“We’re pretty proud of that rank-ing,” said FHS Head Tennis Coach Randall King, whose squad didn’t have the chance to compete against Lampasas because of a rainout, but looks forward to a team tennis makeup match with the Badgers in January.
“It’s good to know where we stand because now we know that first match in January we have to come in ready to compete,” King said. “We can’t just play our way into the spring season.”
The team capped its fall schedule with three wins over the past few days, including last night’s 10-2 (17-2) win over Hondo played on Sch-reiner University courts in Kerrville.
On Friday, Oct. 5, the team hosted and defeated neighboring Kerrville’s
Tivy High School squad, 10-0 (17-2). And, the day before that on Thurs-
day, Oct. 4, the team ventured to
Mason to play Brownwood, winning 10-0 (18-1.)

Rematch with Wimberleylooms Tuesday for FHS
Netters finish fall season ranked third in state
By Matt Ward
Though one match still sep-arates them from a return match with rival Wimber-ley, the Fredericksburg High School varsity volleyball team kept pace with the Lady Tex-ans in the hunt for their first District 27-3A champion-ship, picking up two wins this week.
FHS defeated Navarro 25-17, 25-20, 25-21 Tuesday night and edged Bandera 25-16, 25-23, 17-25, 21-25, 15-9 Friday evening.
Middle blocker Allie Doucet was awarded a “Game Ball” last week by the San Anto-nio Express-News for her play against Boerne and Bandera as she recorded 22 kills, a .435 hitting percentage, six digs and two blocks in the week.
The Billies will host Canyon Lake Friday evening at 6 p.m. before travelling to Wimber-ley for a return match against the Lady Texans Tuesday at 7 p.m.
Wimberley remains unbeat-en and sits alone atop the district standings at 6-0, fol-lowed by Fredericksburg at 5-1 and Boerne at 4-2. Navar-ro is in fourth place at 2-4, Canyon Lake is in fifth at 1-5, while Bandera is at 0-6.
“Halfway through district
and we are still in striking distance of Wimberley, but we have to take care of busi-ness with the other teams in our district,” Fredericksburg head coach Jason Roemer said. “Top to bottom, there are some very skilled players on each team in our district. We can’t take nights off.”
Sweep over NavarroOpening the second round
of District 27-3A play the right way, the Billies swept Geronimo Navarro 25-17, 25-20, 25-21 Tuesday evening at home.
“We had a good game plan on what we needed to do dif-ferently than the first time we played them and the kids executed it perfectly,” Roemer said. “The second round of district is making adjust-ments and executing those adjustments and we were able to do that tonight.”
The key adjustment from the first match to last night, he noted, was Fredericks-burg’s ability to better handle the serve receive game.
“Brittani Loth was the tar-get of their serves the last time we played them and they tried to serve her again and she handled it great,” Roemer said. “She and Payton Rob-ertson both passed very well and played great defense.

doesn’t matter. We’ve got to work on what matters.”
While Fredericksburg has been riding high after a four-game winning streak, Canyon Lake, their opponent Friday night, has faced the exact opposite fortunes.
After an opening week 26-21 victory over Blanco, the Hawks went into last week’s open date on a four game losing streak, falling to Som-erset (54-35), La Vernia (14-13), Burnet (37-31) and La Grange (34-9).
“We’re not looking at Can-yon Lake’s record,” Moffett
said. “They’re 1-4 and they definitely didn’t expect to be 1-4. They’re still pretty good.”
Led by a senior backfield combination of quarterback Branson Belcher (36-75 pass-ing for 689 yards and seven touchdowns) and running back Eduardo Covarrubias (65 carries for 337 yards and three touchdowns), the Hawks operate out of a pro-style, West Coast offense, utilizing both a fullback and tight end on almost every play.
“Every team in our district is better than every team we’ve played up to this point,” Moffett said. “Every team plays really good technique, so you watch Canyon Lake on film and they may not be as athletic as they were last year, but they’re playing good technique and getting coached well.”
Defensively, Canyon Lake operates out of a base 4-3 package (four defensive line-men with three linebackers), though it is expected that the Hawks will be forced into a nickel package (extra corner-back instead of linebacker) in order to slow the Billies’ three-receiver sets.
In 2008, the two schools met for the first time as Can-yon Lake was in their first year as a varsity program with the Billies coming out on top 65-13 for their homecoming game.
Since then, Canyon Lake has won each of the last three matchups. Despite that fact, Fredericksburg players expect the game to be much more competitive than the 35-7 loss FHS suffered last season.
“I don’t believe that any-body thinks there is anyone in our district that we can’t beat
and that’s what we were try-ing to achieve by accomplish-ing 4-1,” Moffett said.
Fredericksburg will be boosted by the fact that the bye week should allow them to field a completely healthy varsity roster for the first time this season.
During the extra time, coaches and players focused on academics, with the end of the six weeks occurring last Friday.
“A lot of our kids do so much — they take multiple AP classes — that they get in a little bind (at the end of the six weeks),” Moffett said.
Regardless, he said he expects Fredericksburg to have at least as many Aca-demic All-District players as the Billies had in 2011 (22) and as many Academic All-State players (six).
“We had at least two and a half of our best practices last week. The kids were flying around and part of that goes along with winning,” Moffett said. “Your chest is out a little bit when you’re 4-1 and you feel a little bit more confi-dent.”
The confidence has led Billie fans and players to utter the one Moffett said he doesn’t want to hear until FHS has three district victories – play-offs.
“We heard the p-word a lot last week. Use the p-word after three district wins,” he said. “If you look too far ahead, you can get smacked in the mouth.”
Last time we played them, we struggled making adjust-ments to their offense, espe-cially their big outside hitter. Tonight we read her and were in the right spot almost every time.”
Libero Payton Robertson set a career-high 43 digs in a three set match for Freder-icksburg in the win.
“She (the Navarro hitter) was hitting some bombs at Payton and she was digging it to our setter all night,” Roemer said. “A dig like that is equivalent to a blocked shot in basketball. When you get your shot blocked a couple of times, it starts to frustrate you and makes you do something you’re not real comfortable doing. That’s what happened to their hitters tonight.”
Four different Billies had at least eight kills in the match as Trista Hartmann and Katie Kuhlmann each had 10 kills, while Loth and Allie Doucet each added eight.
“We were able to attack at every angle and their defense was in scramble mode most of the night,” Roemer said. “Brit-tani played really well all the way around; she had a great night at the net and on the back row. She’s played really well these past few weeks.”

Five set win over BanderaWhat started out as an easy
two set lead quickly turned into a five set battle as the Billies were able to hold off Bandera 25-16, 25-23, 17-25, 21-25, 15-9 Friday evening.
“We survived, but did not play our best,” Roemer said. “As expected, we played well enough on offense, the ques-tion was whether we could play defense well enough to stop Bandera.”
“In sets three and four, we played like we expected Ban-dera to just give us the match,” he added. “To their credit they kept fighting and fighting and made us earn the win.”
Three Billies recorded dou-ble digit kills in the match, including Hartmann (14), Kuhlmann (13) and Doucet (11).
“Maddy Johnston had to step in and set tonight and I thought she played well,” Roemer said. “She did a great job of handling the moment, and plugging along setting our offense. In sets three and four, we had trouble connect-ing with her at times and we became too predictable, but I’m very proud of the way we responded in set five when our backs were against the wall.”

practice at 7:30 p.m., I had to drive out to the farm and feed my cows,” he said. “The next morning, when I’d have to be at football film at 7:30 a.m., I’d have to get up at 5:30 a.m. so I could go feed my cows. The discipline of it is some-thing I understand.”
His brother was a member of the high school band and received a band scholarship in college, and Moffett said the importance of high school band has a deeper meaning to him than most football coach-es.
“It’s real important to me personally that kids do what they want to do in high school,” Moffett said. “That’s a special time in their life and they need to enjoy it.”
While most of their team-mates head back into the lock-er room for halftime adjust-ments, Castaneda, Dittmar and Eckert pull off their jer-sey and pads and pick up an instrument.
“It’s a little bit lighter mind-set seeing the game from a different perspective,” Ditt-mar said. “You’re in the band instead of on the football team. It’s a different point of view.”
Switching from football to band back to football again within 10 minutes is especially taxing for the players, who have to make adjustments on the fly.
“I’m still in the football mindset and thinking about the game,” Eckert, lineman and trombone player, said. “I can kind of autopilot through the show.”
Assistant football coaches catch the players up individu-ally on their halftime adjust-ments either before or after the band performs, depending on the halftime order.
By the time the second half kicks off, all three players are fully back in ‘football mode,’ ready to hit someone after playing as a part of the Class 3A state honor band.
While many students at other schools have to choose one activity over another, Fredericksburg players are fortunate not to have to make that choice, which they say helps them in the long run.
“I really can’t imagine not doing band or football,” Eckert said. “I feel like it’s really going to help me turn into who I will be in the future.”
Read Phil Houseal’s “Full House” column in the Enter-tainment section for more on band students who double as Red-Hotts and FHS cheer-leaders.

Last night, the freshmen knocked off Navarro 25-22, 25-13.
“We played well tonight. We connected as a team and everyone did some great things,” Roemer said. “The middles blocked very well for us tonight and the outsides did great things for us on offense.”

Limited to just five offensive plays in the first quarter, the Heritage football team saw themselves playing from be-hind, down 16-14 to non-dis-trict foe New Braunfels Acad-emy late in the first half.
However, a 15-yard touch-down catch by Joe Meek from Dixon Patillo as the first half expired gave Heritage all the momentum they needed as the Eagles scored 30 un-answered points in a 52-30 home win Friday evening.
“This was a playoff caliber team and it went a long ways in preparing us for the rest of district and the playoffs,” head coach Tim Shipman said. “New Braunfels did a great job of finding our weaknesses and exposing them. The in-tensity and environment was playoff type.”
After Meek scored on a sev-en-yard run early in the first quarter, the Heritage offense sat for most of the quarter as New Braunfels controlled the ball, limiting the Eagles to just five offensive snaps.
“Anytime you have a team that can limit the opponent to that few plays, you have a great chance of success,” Shipman said. “We continued trying to adjust to their passing attack in the second and were able to move the ball a little better. I was extremely pleased with the way our team dealt with the first half adversity.”
In the third quarter, the Eagles scored on a five-yard run by Chad Johnson, a one-yard run by Joe Lucas and a nine-yard reception by John-son from Meek before New Braunfels scored with 34 sec-onds left in the quarter.
Just 13 seconds later, Heri-tage responded with their fourth touchdown in the third as Pattillo rushed for a 60-yard score.
“Coming out in the second half I felt like the team settled in a little bit, played better de-fense and reduced the mental errors,” Shipman said. “It is important if you want to be a great team to handle adversity and a tough opponent with the kind of fight our team
showed tonight.” Though New Braunfels was
able to trim the deficit to 14 points on an early touchdown in the fourth quarter, a 21-yard touchdown run by Pat-tillo sealed the game late for Heritage.
The Eagles will continue their home stand this Friday as they host district oppo-nent San Antonio New Life for Heritage’s third annual “Flight Night” contests.
“This week it will be impor-tant for our guys to stay fo-cused. We have a lot of foot-ball left in this season and a lot of goals yet to achieve,” Shipman said. “There will be a lot of opportunities for dis-tractions. Good teams allow those distractions to affect their preparation and execu-tion. Great teams do not miss a beat, stay focused even more and take care of business.”
New Life currently sits tied for fourth place in the district standings with a 1-2 record after falling to San Antonio Town East 87-38 Friday eve-ning.
“San Antonio new Life has a great coaching staff and we have a lot of respect for what they are doing through the game of football,” Ship-man said. “We look forward to playing them and building relationships. This will be an-other district game and one that we need to win.”

Winning three games over the past week, the 6-2 Heri-tage varsity volleyball team is now second place in the western half of Texas Associa-tion of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) District 5.
The squad is due in the district tournament start-ing Tuesday, Oct. 16, when it is scheduled to host at home the third-place team from the eastern half of District 5. Game time has tentatively been set for 6 p.m. in the First Baptist Church.
“Come cheer your Lady Eagles volleyball team on as we begin playoffs,” said coach Carol Bell.
Playing a double-header on their home court last night, Heritage defeated Rainbow Hills (25-18, 25-11, 25-10) and then New Life (25-12, 25-17, 29-27.)
“It was a great night for the Lady Eagles starting off with a double header and recogni-tion of our only senior player, Nicole Webb,” Bell said.
“Consistently clearing the bench and seeing fundamen-tals improved 100 percent in competitive rallies was a highlight for me,” she added. “One of my goals as a coach is to bring every player up to their best potential in a game situation and I was able to see that in several players last night.”

“As a team, however, we had an uncharacteristically poor night at the service line and just gave away too many unearned points to the Bulldogs, who gladly capi-talized on them,” McBee said.
“We need to clean up the un-forced errors and work on the mental aspect of the game,” she said. “We go back to work in the gym this afternoon to get ready for next Monday.”

“We finally had our first male athlete break 17 min-utes this season in the 5K and we are hoping to have one or two girls break 13 minutes this week in the 3200 me-ter distance,” he added. “The athletes are continuing to see their times improve each meet and as a team we are right where we expected to be at this point in the season.”

Billies finish inthird place at
weekend tourney
Holding their own against one of the better teams in Class 5A, the Fredericksburg High School varsity boys’ basketball team fell 70-61 at home to Smithson Valley Tuesday evening.
Fredericksburg finished in third place in the Canyon Lake Tournament over the weekend, defeating Lockhart and Somerset while falling to tourney champion Ran-dolph on a buzzer beating shot.
The Billies will travel to fourth-ranked Liberty Hill Friday evening before return-ing home to host Hondo Mon-day.
Both games are slated for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
Smithson Valley 70, FHS 61
Facing 5A Smithson Valley, Fredericksburg battled to a near-draw for three quarters before falling 70-61 Tuesday evening.
“This was a very nice per-formance on our part. I was really pleased with our effort,” FHS head coach Tim Kaman said. “The problem was that Smithson Valley real-ly played extremely well. It seemed like they made every shot and we had a hand in their face.”
The Rangers shot 50 percent from the three point line and over 60 percent from the field in the contest.
“I thought Hunter Fries played one of the best games he ever played,” Kaman said, adding that Fries “really defended well” against Divi-sion I recruit A.C. Reid from Smithson Valley.
Fredericksburg managed to take a two-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, but Smithson Valley exploded for 29 points in the final eight minutes to win.
“Another positive was that we finally got to play Colin Reyes. He has missed all 14 games with a knee injury,” Kaman said. “He’s a little rusty, but I thought he did a lot of nice things. Once we get our chemistry
together, we could poten-tially be a very good team. We are still a work in progress.”

which was good for third place at the Canyon Lake tourna-ment Thursday through Sat-urday.
Fredericksburg opened the tourney by defeating Lockhart 74-48.
“A big fourth quarter was the key,” Kaman said.

In game two, Fredericksburg fell 51-49 to eventual Canyon Lake tournament champion Randolph.
“This was probably the championship game. Ran-dolph always has a solid team. They jumped out on us early, but we did a nice job of coming back,” Kaman said.

Heritage drops60-14 decision
to Seguin LifegateBy Danny Hirt
A sixth state TAPPS Divi-sion II six-man football cham-pionship just wasn’t in the cards this year as Heritage School dropped a 60-14 deci-sion against Seguin Lifegate Saturday afternoon.
Although the crown eluded the Eagles in 2012, there is still a feeling in the Heritage camp that the team achieved goals that might have seemed unachievable in the pre-sea-son.
“I do think it is important to recognize and give credit to this Heritage team,” said the Eagles’ head coach Tim Ship-man. “We made the greatest run in Heritage history.”
The previous two play-off games in 2012 found the Eagles to be underdogs by as
much as 45 points. But Heri-tage racked up those two con-tests by scores of 60-14 over El Paso Jesus Chapel on Nov. 24 and 54-52 over number one ranked Wichita Falls Notre Dame the following Saturday.
“The growth and experi-ence this team garnered from this season is unexplainable,” Shipman said. “This was near-ly like getting two seasons in one. We have sophomores that are already playing like juniors, and freshmen who are more than ready to play their roles next season.”
Seguin Lifegate 60,Heritage 14
What started out as a poten-tial nail-biter all the way soon fizzled into a one-sided game for Lifegate as it broke open an 8-8 first quarter tie with a 24-point barrage that didn’t end until early in the second stanza.
That’s when Heritage’s Dixon Pattillo plunged over from two yards out early in the second stanza, pulling the Eagles to within 18 points (32-14).
But the Falcons flexed their muscles again, reeling off 22 unanswered points to take a commanding 54-14 lead at halftime.
It didn’t take Lifegate long

She said, “I looked up and saw one team and not five individuals. It was one of the first times that I can truly say that.”
Grona reported that Medi-na Valley, “made a run on us in the second by throwing a full court press which caused us to go chaotic, resulting in turnovers.”

“We had many chances to win this game. We shot 32 percent from the paint,” Kaman said. “We missed that many lay-ups. You can not win many games if you can not put the ball in the hole.”

Tuesday, Dec. 11Playing on the road Tues-
day night, the FHS JV girls’ defeated Medina Valley, 42-34.
“We seemed a bit sluggish at the start of the game,” Coach Kristy Danz said. “Maybe it was the travel. We just were not our usual selves during the first quarter.”
She said, “We were able to turn things around in the second and played some very good basketball.”
“We were aggressive on defense and efficient on offense,” Danz said. “We were able to run the press more effectively and create turn-overs which transferred into points for us.”
She added, “We managed to play well enough for a win, however, we still need to learn to play four solid quarters.”

Coach’s comments: “I thought we played pretty well most of the game,” Coach Ste-ven Castillo said. “We had a rough time controlling the pace of the game for a couple of min-

He said, “We managed to get back on track late in the fourth quarter to hold off their charge.”

“The team played really well but things did not work out in our favor,” Weirich said. “We were able to make it a game going into the fourth down by just two points, but Boerne held us scoreless in the last seven minutes.”

“The focus next week will be to limit turnovers,” Zenner said, noting that the team turned the ball over 29 times.
He said, “It is hard to win games with that many turn-overs. We have a good team and are looking for more con-sistent play.”

“It was a good tournament for us as we gained more valu-able experience,” Roemer said.
“We played well against Uvalde, racing out to a 24-8 lead in the first half,” he said.
Roemer also said, “We got beat by a very good Dripping Springs team. We had trouble handling their pressure on the ball.”
“We played with them the first four minutes of the game, but their pressure hurt us and the turnovers started to turn into easy baskets for them,” the coach said.
Roemer said that Madison Trousdale, Lauren Smith, Emily Shepherd and Michaela Priess all played well on the weekend.

to claim the state title under the 45-point mercy rule when, in the opening minutes of the third period, Tyler Swisher bolted over from five yards out to end the game at 60-14.
For the game, Swisher rushed for 100 yards on 10 carries and gleaned another
155 yards through the air by completing nine of 16 passes while suffering one intercep-tion.
Swisher, who accounted for seven Falcon touchdowns (five rushing, two passing), started off the scoring for Lifegate by carrying the ball over the goal line less than three minutes into the game. With the suc-cessful two-point conversion kick, the Falcons went up by 8-0.
Heritage, however, respond-ed immediately by driving the ball downfield on its ensuing possession which culminated in a Dixon Pattillo TD from the one. Leighton Klepac tied the score with his conversion kick.
But things began to fall apart for the Eagles quickly, starting with an onsides kick that was returned 42 yards to the end zone by Lifegate’s Kyle Coff-man, to put his team up, 16-8.
Two more tallies by the Fal-cons — a four-yard run by Swisher, then a Swisher-to-Patrick Haley 30-yard pass play — brought the score to 32-8.
Pattillo managed to squeak over from the two early in the second quarter to pull to with-in 18 points (32-14).
But the comeback bid end-ed there as the Eagles could make no further progress on the scoreboard. Meanwhile, Lifegate’s Swisher engineered three more touchdowns (two on the ground, one through the air) to build up his team’s lead to 54-14 at intermission.
The game ended on the 45-point rule early in the third when Swisher scored from five yards out.
Pattillo, who scored both touchdowns for Heritage,
amassed 136 passing yards, completing 12 of 15 attempts. His leading receiver on the day was Chad Johnson who hauled in seven catches for 65 yards.
Other Eagle receivers were Blake Harpold (four catches for 46 yards), Joe Lucas (two for 28 yards), and Joe Meek (three for 25 yards).
“First and foremost, you have to congratulate and give Seguin credit,” Shipman said. “They played a great game and deserve to be state champi-ons.” He went on to call Life-gate Coach John Rabon, his staff and players, “a class act.”
But with that said, Shipman admitted there is still a sting that’s felt at being that close to a state title and coming up short. “We want to win and win it all. We now know that the state championship next year must go through Seguin. We will start Monday working toward that,” he said.
Career endsfor two players
Whenever a season con-cludes, it’s time to think about those who’ll being leaving the team permanently; namely, this year’s seniors.
For Heritage, that distinc-tion falls to Dixon Pattillo and Blake Harpold.
These two players, accord-ing to Shipman, “have poured so much time, energy, heart and leadership into Heritage

football. Both of their careers saw them go to the semifinals (2010), win a state title (2011) and take a young team to the state championship (2012).
“We will miss both of them. Yes, we will miss their play on the football field, but more than that we will miss their leadership and attitudes,” the coach added.
