She was about to be auc- tioned to the highest bidder during the 93rd Annual Chincoteague Fire Company’s Pony Penning. The filly was carried out to the auc- tion yard by a hulking man. The man’s T-shirt identified him as a member of the Atlantic Fire Company, who had come to pitch in for the cause. The two-month-old filly poked her head up so all could see the fuzzy hair in her ears that looked from a distance like it was braided. Her face was speckled with color. She was gently leaning on the cowpoke and appeared to be whispering to him, “Are you my daddy?” The foal favored the famous Misty of Chincoteague from the book by that name. Finally, the wrangler put her down and let her walk a bit, mak- ing the audience squeal some more. The bidding was fast and high. Little Misty seemed unimpressed with the commotion. Fire company spokes- person Denise Bowden, also a mem- ber of the town council, said the po- ny will stay on the islands until Oc- tober when she will make her way to Washington state to her new home. She wasn’t the first pony to be sold that day. A Pennsylvania fam- ily bought the first pony to appear that day. to about 150 horses. That is the max-imum number that the government says can be supported on the grazing lands in the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge on Assateague.
Bowden later confirmed an accident occurred during the events. “We had a great swim and a great auction. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. I guess things were going so smooth was too good to be true. I am so sad to have to tell you all that Butterfly Kiss-es tragically died this afternoon after a freak accident in the pen at the carni-val grounds. Riptide was chasing her, as she was running, she slipped, fell hard to the ground and slid into the fence break-ing her neck. The vet and cowboys were
right there within minutes. (There was) no chance of survival. She was eutha-nized and her body was taken back to Assateague where she was buried.”
“Many of you have asked about her foal. We have a blessing in dis-guise, (the) baby was bought by a local family who owns horses. They immediately came and took the baby home. Baby has already started on a bottle and will be supplemented. We have already heard the negative and the positive as we expected. We feel that we manage this herd very well. It was an accident that has re-ally broken our hearts. I ask that you please keep any negative com-ments for another day, this has been overwhelming enough and we need to process this and please keep these ponies and cowboys in your hearts. Thank you!”

Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge will host the NASA Astron-omy Night Sky Summer Series Aug. 11, and will remain open overnight for a pleasant evening of stargazing, if the weather cooperates.
Start the night learning some background information, with an Astronomy 101 presentation at the Herbert H. Bateman Educational and Administrative Center. The pro-gram will be presented three times – 7:30, 8, and 8:30 p.m. – by employees of the NASA Wallops Flight Facil-ity Visitor Center. Auditorium pre-sentations are offered regardless of weather, but space is limited to 140 people per session.
After the program, head to the beach, where experts and telescopes
will be available from approximate-ly 8:30 to 9:45 p.m. (weather per-mitting). To accommodate the event, Parking Lot #1 will close to vehicle traffic from 3 to 10 p.m.
Can’t get enough? Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge is keeping the recreational beach open all night for stargazers! From Saturday eve-ning, Aug. 11, until dawn on Sunday, Aug. 12, visitors are invited to settle in for a full night of sky watching. A red light is recommended to main-tain night vision. Don’t forget binoc-ulars and insect repellant.
Visitors wishing to enjoy over-night stargazing must arrive on the refuge before the entrance gate clos-es at 10 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11. You may leave at any time. Anyone leaving after 10 p.m. will not be per-mitted to re-enter until 5 a.m. the following day. Only beach access and parking will remain open after hours. Public access to trails and other visitor facilities is prohibited after 10 p.m. For optimal nighttime
viewing, campfires are not allowed after 10 p.m.
The Astronomy Night Sky Sum-mer Series is presented by NASA Wallops Flight Facility Visitor Cen-ter in collaboration with Chincote-ague National Wildlife Refuge, As-sateague Island National Seashore, and the Delmarva Space Scienc-es Foundation (DSSF). Guided sky
viewing through high-powered tele-scopes is provided by DSSF. These activities are free and open to the public. However, standard refuge en-trance fees still apply.

By Bill HallThe Miss Molly was the big winner in last week-
end’s 2018 Eastern Shore Marlin Club Billfish Re-lease Tournament. In addition to being the overall winner with two billfish releases, the vessel also took home awards for the first billfish release in the tour-nament, Top Boat-First Day, Top Boat-Third Day, and the largest dolphin (mahi), a 55-pound, 8-ounce bull! Second Place went to the vessel It’s All Good with a billfish release. The Byte Me earned the larg-est tuna award with a yellowfin weighing 46 pounds, 8 ounces, and the Strike Zone took top wahoo honors with a 21-pounder.
Overall, most anglers I spoke with described the offshore fishing as slow, despite typically productive conditions such as ideal surface water temperatures, the presence of “pretty” water, and the abundance of sea life such as dolphin and whales.
Cobia, red drum, and flounder continue to provide action in the lower Chesapeake Bay, but the upper bay’s action remains worrisome and slow with only a few spot, sand mullet, and a smattering of croakers in the deeper water and small stripers and bluefish in the shallows.
Lower Shore – Mark Snook, of Chris’ Bait & Tackle, reported that there is still “decent” cobia ac-tion along Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel and up at Buoy 16. The shop had received a good report on flounder catches coming from along the bridge pil-ings. Catches of snapper blues were being made off Kiptopeke, where sea mullet were also reported. Sea mullet (whiting) catches were also being made over Lattimore Shoals. Large red drum releases were be-ing made over the shoals during the late afternoons and evenings.
Jeb Brady, of Bailey’s Bait & Tackle, said that the cobia bite was good last weekend with reports of a lot of 40-to 45-inch fish mixed in with a lots of “shorts.” One local captain reported the sea mullet and spot fishing was good in the deep water off Buoy 36-A. The shop weighed in a 5-pound, 2-ounce flounder on Sunday, but overall, the flounder fishing was slow.
Wachapreague – The big fishing news out of Wachapreague was last weekend’s Eastern Shore Marlin Club’s Annual Billfish Release Tourna-ment. As reported earlier, the crew of the Miss Molly cleaned up on the awards, releasing two of the event’s three billfish and landing a monster mahi which should take the lead in the Virginia
Saltwater Fishing Tour-nament. Congratulations goes out to Jazmine Ev-ans, who was awarded the Marlin Club’s Bob Fate Service Award.
Captain Lindsay Paul, at Trident Tackle, also report-ed that a few flounder had been caught inside of the in-let, including some caught while jigging in the inlet.
Chincoteague – Don-na Rae, at Captain Bob’s Marina, reported that the weather has been playing havoc with the fishing. A few flounder were still being caught in Chincoteague Channel between Beebe Road and the American Le-gion Hall. Some kingfish/whiting were caught in the inlet, but croakers have been scarce. The only consis-tent action has been with sharks in the inlet and be-tween Buoy 10 and 2TL (Turner’s Lump).
Jimmy Vasilou, of Captain Steve’s Bait & Tackle, reported that the shop weighed in a citation 36-pound dolphin (mahi), caught aboard the Aquaholic. Captain John returned with limits of flounder and seabass from the offshore wrecks as well as a pair of yellowfin caught while chunking. Vasilou said that a few floun-der had been caught inside Chincoteague Bay, while some croaker catches have come from off Memorial Park, Buoy 10, and in Queen Sound. Spot catches have come from the surf, especially during the ear-ly mornings, and one angler landed a nice 1-pound, 3-ounce pompano from the beach. The shop is hosting
a youth croaker/flounder tournament through Aug. 15, with a portion of the proceeds being donated to the Chincoteague Elementary School.
Upper Shore – Captain Matt Abell, at the Sea Hawk Sports Center, reported that there are still a lot of small cobia in the lower bay with a few keep-ers mixed in. Inshore flounder fishing remained poor, primarily due to dirty water conditions from all the recent rain. A crew fishing with Kyle Krabill report-ed that flounder action on the rail cars was slow on Sunday, but they quickly limited out by 10:30 a.m. on some of the deeper wrecks. Tuna fishing has been slow locally, but reports of yellowfin coming on the chunk were received by vessels fishing out of Ocean City. A party with Captain Walt, of Light Tackle Charters out of Crisfield, landed some small rock and bluefish in the upper Pocomoke Sound.

Each year the U.S. Postal Service holds a contest among school children to design post cards (below right and below middle) and dec-orative stamps called
announced that its S.S. J.R. Thomp-son Cygnus™ spacecraft successful-ly completed its ninth cargo supply mission to the International Space Station under NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services (CRS-1) contract.
The spacecraft removed more than 6,600 pounds (over 3,000 ki-lograms) of disposable cargo, a new record for Cygnus. The S.S. J.R. Thompson also successfully execut-ed secondary missions that includ-ed the demonstration of Cygnus’ ability to reboost the space station and the deployment of six CubeSats into orbit from a NanoRacks Cube-Sat deployer.
The mission officially conclud-ed on July 30 at 5:17 p.m. ET when Cygnus performed a safe, destruc-tive re-entry into the Earth’s atmo-sphere over the Pacific Ocean east of New Zealand. The spacecraft re-
mained docked for 52 days at the or-biting laboratory and departed the space station on July 15.
“From launch to our safe re-entry, the S.S. J.R. Thompson performed every phase of this mission perfect-ly,” said Frank Culbertson, presi-dent, space systems group, Northrop Grumman. “We now turn our atten-tion toward final preparations for the next Cygnus cargo mission lat-er this year with a continued focus on supporting the needs of the crew members aboard the International Space Station, as well as enabling crucial research programs in space.”
The mission began May 21, when Cygnus launched aboard a Northrop Grumman Antares™ rocket from NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia. Upon arrival at the orbiting laboratory, Cygnus delivered approx-imately 7,400 pounds (3,350 kilo-grams) of cargo, supplies, and scien-tific experiments to the astronauts.
Pending NASA’s specific cargo needs, Northrop Grumman is pre-pared to launch an additional CRS mission later this year aboard the company’s Antares rocket from NA-SA’s Wallops Flight Facility.
