AISC certified manufacturing New Millennium manufactures FreeSpan™ castellated and cellular beams right here in the USA at our production facility in Continental, Ohio.

During the castellated beam production process, a solid steel beam forged from recycled steel is cut in half lengthways, using automated plasma torch cutting. The split halves are then offset and welded back together to create a beam that is the same weight, but is now deeper, stronger, and ideally suited for long span applications.

Our highly efficient manufacturing facilities can produce 90-foot castellated beam sections. Customized beams are engineered to address unique project needs, including welded infill sections for special connection points.

For parking garages, hospitals and most any project where space is at a premium, the beam offers a structurally lean and low profile with an open, airy, and aesthetic appeal.

How to Specify

How to Specify

When a wide-flange beam is castellated with a standard hole pattern, the section depth increases by approximately 50%. For example a W12x14 beam at 12 inch nominal depth expands to 18 inch nominal depth when castellated. The resulting castellated beam section is designated a CB18x14, where:

CB = Castellated Beam (LB for Cellular Beam)

18 = Nominal Depth in inches (1.5 times the nominal wide-flange depth)

14 = Nominal weight per foot (plf)

FreeSpan™ beams may be manufactured with either hexagonal web openings or round web openings. Beams with hexagonal web openings are called castellated beams and designated with a CB, whereas beams with round web openings are called cellular beams and designated with an LB. The difference in web opening shape is primarily for architectural purposes. However, for projects using a galvanized finish, New Millennium recommends the use of cellular beams in order to minimize stress risers in the galvanizing process.

The web opening pattern may vary depending on span, end connections, load requirements, or hole alignment to adjacent beams. So, it is important that New Millennium be informed of the loading condition under which the

beam is intended to be used. Unless otherwise noted on the contract structural drawings, New Millennium will assume the beam to have a uniformly distributed design loading. Beam design loads other than uniformly distributed must be specified either on the framing plan or in a loading diagram.

Any other special requirements, such as duct passage or special castellation geometry, must also be clearly noted on the drawings.

Hybrid FreeSpan™ beams may be constructed of two different beam sizes, combining a lighter upper half beam with a heavier lower half beam, provided that both beams are the same nominal depth, and the web thicknesses do not differ by more than 3/16”. Hybrid FreeSpan™ beams are commonly used in composite construction, where the concrete slab acts as a large top flange. CB18x14/26 is an example of an asymmetric FreeSpan™ beam designation, where:

CB = Castellated Beam (LB for Cellular Beam)

18 = Nominal Depth in inches (1.5 times the nominal wide flange depth)

14 = Nominal weight per foot of top beam half (plf)

26 = Nominal weight per foot of bottom beam half (plf)

How to Specify

Finish

FreeSpan™ castellated and cellular beams can be furnished with a shop provisional coating. The shop coating is intended to provide temporary protection to the steel beams during delivery, storage on site, and erection in an atmosphere comparable with SSPC Environmental Zone 1, normally dry. The primer conforms to both SSPC 15, Type 1 (gray) and Federal Specification TT-P-31 (gray), with minimum 1.0 mils dry film thickness.

FreeSpan™ beams can be furnished with a galvanized finish. When using a galvanized finish, it is important to minimize stress risers such as abrupt changes in cross section. For this reason, we recommend the use of cellular beams rather than castellated for use with galvanized finishes.

Welding

All welding procedures and welders are certified in accordance with AWSD1.1.

Deflection and Camber

FreeSpan™ castellated and cellular beam deflection is calculated using simple beam theory, with Ieffective = 0.9 Ix_net. If camber is required, it is the responsibility of the designer to indicate the camber requirements on the contract framing plan. FreeSpan™ beams have the advantage of inexpensive cambering during the manufacturing process.

Floor Vibration

Floor vibration characteristics may be checked following the same procedure used for wide-flange beams, as discussed in the American Institute of Steel Construction Design Guide 11, Floor Vibrations Due to Human Activity. Due to their high stiffness-to-weight ratio, FreeSpan™ castellated and cellular beams are often preferred for use in vibration sensitive applications.

Materials

Steel used to manufacture FreeSpan™ castellated and cellular beams conforms to ASTM A572/A572M, A529-50, or A992-50. For other material specifications, contact New Millennium for availability.

Design

FreeSpan™ castellated and cellular beams are designed in accordance with the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC) Specification for Structural Steel Buildings, 14th Edition, ANSI/AISC 360-10.

FreeSpan™ castellated and cellular beams are designed similar to Vierendeel trusses. The design approach is based on the procedure outlined in Book of Welded Structures, by Omar Blodgett, and includes the following checks:

Overall Bending

Appropriate checks are made for the overall beam stability and flexural strength, as a function of lateral bracing and effective unbraced length.

Shear

Three potential shear limit states are checked for FreeSpan™ beams:

1. Vertical shear thru the gross section at a web post

2. Vertical shear through top and bottom T-sections at a web opening

3. Horizontal shear at the web post and weld

T-Section Flexural Stresses

Similar to a Vierendeel truss, the transfer of vertical shear across the web openings results in local bending stresses within the top and bottom T-sections. This local bending stress must be considered in combination with the tension and compression resulting from the overall beam flexural stresses, as well as the shear stresses.

Web Post Buckling

The FreeSpan™ web posts are subjected to a variety of stresses. Just as with the T-Sections at web openings, the web posts are subjected to flexural stresses resulting from shear transfer, in addition to vertical and horizontal shear, as well as compression due to loads applied to the top flange. Web post buckling strength is checked based on research performed by Dr. Richard Redwood of McGill University.

Handling and Erection

FreeSpan™ castellated and cellular beams are to be handled by attaching cables through the web holes at approximately 1/3 points of the beam span. Care should be taken to avoid damaging beams during handling and erection.

For FreeSpan™ beams shown with bridging requirements, the center row of bridging must be in place prior to re-leasing hoisting cables. After the center bridging row is in place, only one person is permitted on the FreeSpan™ beam, until all other required bridging rows are installed.

Bridging requirements for common FreeSpan™ beam sizes and spans are shown in the FreeSpan™ Castellated and Cellular Beam Section Property Tables. The bridging requirements shown are based on a maximum construction load of a 4000 lb deck bundle equally supported across a minimum of three FreeSpan™ beams, plus two employees. The deck bundle is assumed to be either spread along a 3 foot portion of the beam no more than one foot from the

support at one end, or uniformly distributed along the beam span. Bridging requirements were calculated based on beam spans up to a maximum of 90 feet in length.

The instructions and the tabulated bridging requirements are based on typical conditions and common construction loading. If unusual conditions or loads are present or anticipated, or for spans in excess of 90 feet, please contact New Millennium Building Systems, LLC.

End-to-End Structural Steel Solutions

BIM Design CollaborationWe participate in BIM-based projects using our industry-leading Dynamic Joist® digital design component. The component is available as a free, downloadable add-on for Tekla Structures. Additional components are in development at New Millennium to support our many product lines and for use with other digital software provider formats.

Standard Steel Joists

Joist products include K, LH and DLH Series joists and joist girders, and CJ Series joists (Composite Joist). Joists can be furnished as a single-piece up to 15 feet deep and 125 feet long. All are produced in accordance with the specifications of the Steel Joist Institute.

Flex-Joist™ Gravity Overload Safety System

New Millennium’s Flex-Joist™ is uniquely designed to flex prior to collapse under extreme gravity overload conditions. The slow stretching of steel in tension leads to large inelastic deflections and results in a slower collapse, adding crucial time for emergency response. We achieve this ductile behavior by limiting component relative strength ratios such that a primary tension member is the weakest steel joist component. The Flex-Joist™ design improves steel joist reliability and increases the probability of safe evacuations while generally decreasing the probability of a collapse.

Special Profile Steel Joists

Unique roofline designs are now practical and economical using special profile steel joists, due to our development of engineering specifications enabling over 40,000 special profile steel joist design possibilities. We manufacture a complete range of special profile steel joist products, including bowstring, arched, scissor, double-pitched, and single-pitched joists.

Steel Roof and Floor Decking

Metal deck options include roof deck, form deck and composite deck. Engineered to the application, our steel decking systems are certified to address performance requirements related to such factors as wind uplift, fire resistance and noise reduction.
