Hound
Volume. 4 Issue. 11
Friday 11th March
Dear Parents / Carers,
Inside this issue of the Courageous Hound you will see we have had a very
busy couple of weeks at Bolingbroke Academy. To start with I would like to
thank all the staff for making such fantastic efforts at dressing up on World
Book Day. It is a wonderful events in the school calendar. I really enjoy seeing
the shocked faces of pupils, particularly those in Year 7, who are surprised to
see their teachers dressed up as their favourite book characters.
Yesterday for the national BBC School Report Day we held our very own Mock EU Referendum to see what
pupils felt about this important debate. It was fantastic to see that so many pupils were eager to vote and have
their say. Around 50% of the school voted and I can tell you that the results were very interesting. We asked
the question: Should the United Kingdom remain a member of the European Union? 88% of pupils voted Yes
and only 12% voted No. We will have to wait until the 23rd June to see how close our results are to the real
thing.
Last night Salma Awale represented Bolingbroke in the Jack Petchey "Speak
Out" Challenge against other Wandsworth pupils. She did incredibly well
and I look forward to sharing more details on this in the next issue.
The Parent Council are now preparing for the third annual Spring Fair
which will be on Saturday 23rd April. I ask you all to save this date in
the diary. It is a terrific event that is great fun every year. If you are inter-
ested in helping in any way please contact the Parent Council [email protected] . We hope that
every family can enjoy this special day.
Finally I would like to say thank you to every parent who ensures that their child arrives on time to the
Academy. Can I remind everyone that our school gate closes at 8:15am Monday - Thursday and 8:50am on a
Friday.
Yours Sincerely
Ms C Edis
Advertising Boards for Spring Fair
Rochford Stokes have agreed to sponsor the Spring Fair again and we have now started
the process of collecting 100 addresses so that they can put up their boards to advertise
the fair from end of March until after the fair on April 23. If you are willing to have a
board, please get in touch with Patty on [email protected] or via the parent
council [email protected]

WORLD BOOK DAY 2016
By Ms Jones
Every year World Book Day comes round faster than expected, the chance to dress up, wield the odd weapon,
take on a dramatic persona and completely confuse the new year 7’s.
This year it fell on March 3rd and true to form Bolingbroke Academy did not disappoint. Teachers, Support Staff
and even a group of eager year ten’s dressed up for the occasion.
Everything was represented, classics, anime, book adaptations, plays... Then even before lesson 1 the guessing
began! Pupils played detective, working together, searching through book after book, interrogating any character
they came across in order to guess the most.
Staff could still be seen wandering the school past 5pm in their various outfits – making the most of it! Later this
month we will be find out the results of the pupils’ efforts and whether Verbiest house will be knocked from the
top spot or cling on to their title a little while longer.

WE DAY UK 2016
By Ms Austin
On Wednesday 9th March, Bolingbroke Academy was lucky enough to be invited to Free The Children’s third
annual WE Day event. Our group of thirteen WE Day Ambassadors, Mr Sillah and myself, set off early for the
Wembley SSE Arena. It was a day of inspirational talks, interactive experiences and amazing musical performanc-
es from Labrinth, Fleur East, Darren Criss and DNCE. The show itself took us on a journey, from ‘me’ to ‘we’
inspiring young people to get involved in their local communities, to participate in social action and to be a part
of a bigger, global voice.
Free the Children was set up was set up by Craig and Marc Kielburger in 1995, when both were still at school.
Their aim was to end child slavery. At WE day, they spoke to us about the impact we can make when we work
together. All 12,000 people in the Arena were asked to stand and make the WE Day pledge “We are Powerful.
We are determined. We are a movement”.
One of the main talking points of the day was the power of imagination. Imagination can take you anywhere,
where anything can be achieved. We were treated to a talk from Professor Brian Cox about Earth, and our
place in the universe. After talking us through the famous ‘Pale Blue Dot’ picture of Earth, Professor Cox read us
an extract from astronomer Carl Sagan, “Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone
you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. To me, it
underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the
only home we've ever known.”
Rita Ora also emotionally spoke about her experiences as a Kosovan refugee. She told us that when considering
the refugee crisis, it was important to remember individuals, not statistics. Speaking about the conflict in Syria,
Rita told us that only two things stand our way from helping the worst humanitarian crisis since World War
Two, are racism and indifference. We listened to a Syrian refugee talk about his life, and he truly inspired the
audience to be the generation that makes a difference.

BBC SCHOOL REPORT DAY
By The Bark
Well done to all the pupils who took part in yesterdays' BBC School Report. This is a national event with
schools all across the country taking part. It is a day dedicated to celebrating children’s involvement in current
affairs and journalism. You can see the films that we produced here: http://arkbolingbrokeacademy.org/life-
school/bbc-school-report. Some thoughts on the day from the presenters/cameramen & editors:
Benjamin Year 7
The experience of being a journalist was quite exciting and quite
scary because this is something I’ve never done before. The thing I
enjoyed the most was interviewing people on Northcote road
asking them questions. From yesterday I learned a quite of lot of
things, like how to approach someone who you want to interview
and also how to edit videos. This benefits me because it builds my
confidence when interviewing people. I hope this benefits people
by informing them about the problems around the world.
Ellie Year 10
Being a journalist was an interesting
experience as I got to see how in
different situations you have to adapt
your questions or your interview
depending on the person. As well as
this, you can develop your confidence
as you have to be able to talk to differ-
ent people that you don’t know. I
enjoyed being able to find out how
different people’s opinions varied and
how unique their approaches to the
questions were. From taking part in
BBC School Report I gained a lot more
confidence and I realised that I should
not be timid when I share my view and
be open and passionate like the people
I interviewed.
Harry Year 10
It was fun being a journalist for the BBC school report for the
first time, the main things I included was interviewing people,
getting to find out new information about my topic and also ex-
tra lunch! I think I gained lots of confidence from taking part in
the BBC school report because I had to talk to lots of people
and was also in front of a camera, which I was a bit reluctant to
do before we started. I also learnt about how to edit the groups
videos and transfer them from the iPod to the computers. I think
I will learn from the skills that I learnt.
The EU Referendum by Neesha Year 10
On Thursday 10th March a few pupils (including myself )from year 7 to year 10 took part in the BBC School
Report. We got spilt into two groups, one focusing on the EU Referendum and the other focusing on the
upcoming Olympics and Zika Virus in Brazil. In my opinion, the day was very enjoyable as I got the oppor-
tunity to work with pupils from younger year groups but most importantly got the chance to interview
members of the general public and get a wide range of opinions regarding the referendum. The BBC School
Report is an amazing project to get involved in as it will be benefit me in the future, by putting it on my per-
sonal statement university’s will realise that I have much more to offer apart from my academic grades.
The video gave viewers a deeper insight into the referendum and what the positives and negatives will be for
leaving the EU or remaining in the EU. If you would like to watch it you can visit our school website: http://

HOLOCAUST SURVIVOR CIRLA LEWIS VISITS BOLINGBROKE
By Ms Austin
As part of our commemorations for Holocaust Memorial Day, Year 9 were lucky
enough to listen to the testimony of Holocaust survivor Cirla Lewis. Cirla, who
was born in 1935, spoke about her life as a Jew under Nazi rule.
Cirla was just under five years old when the Germans invaded her native country
of Belgium in 1940, and the recollections that she shared were of an innocent
child living through one of history’s worst atrocities. Her family had a failed at-
tempt to escape to England, and they were forced to remain in Belgium. Cirla
spoke emotionally about saying goodbye to her father, before he was taken away
by the Nazis. She never saw him again. When Cirla’s grandparents were taken
away by the Gestapo to Auschwitz, Cirla and her mother were forced to go into
hiding.
Cirla and her family spent the rest of the war years living alongside other refugees
from the Nazis in a number of ‘safe houses’, and were given shelter by incredibly
brave people who put other people’s lives before their own.
Cirla’s message to Year 9 was powerful- do not hate others, treat each other well. Cirla inspired pupils to be
proud of how diverse their school is, to embrace the differences, as this was not a privilege she had been able to
experience as a young person.
Pupils were given the opportunity to ask their own questions, which Cirla answered openly and honestly. Cirla
spoke about what it was like to be singled out as ‘different’ by having to wear the yellow Star of David. She was
asked about her faith, and whether her experiences had affected her belief in God. Congratulations to pupils for
asking some very thoughtful questions, especially to Zayd Additcott, Tanisha Addicott, Lavina Schultzers and Elea-
nor Palmer.
Finally, we would like to thank Cirla, and
her husband for spending their afternoon
with us at Bolingbroke, for what was a
truly special, and memorable afternoon.
YR 9 SHOREDITCH STREET ART TOUR
By Ms Wheeler
On Mon 29th Feb, Yr 9 pupils went on a trip with Miss Wheeler to
Shoreditch in East London and were given a guided tour by a world
expert on the incredible street art to be found there.
We learnt that many artists come from all over the world to work in
London and many are based in Shoreditch.
We visited the Pure Evil Gallery, where street artists work is now
sold on canvases to the public.
The pupils loved seeing this colourful part of London and were full of
questions about the art-
work and the messages
behind them.

GUYS AND DOLLS - THEATRE TRIP
By Ms Breckon
On Tuesday 8th March, the gangs and hoodlums of Bolingbroke Academy eluded their afternoon study, instead
taking to the streets and heading to the Savoy Speakeasy (Theatre) for a performance of the West End show
Guys and Dolls. In fact, this (not so)* rowdy mob were doing their homework: essential preparation for their
upcoming school production, Bugsy Malone.
Set in New York in the prohibition era of the 1930s and featuring gamblers, gangsters and nightclub singers, the
production has many parallels with Bugsy Malone. Pupils were treated to some of Broadway’s greatest
show‑stopping tunes, including Luck Be a Lady, Sit Down You're Rockin' the Boat and My Time of Day, as well as
dazzling choreography by world‑renowned Cuban ballet star Carlos Acosta and Andrew Wright.
Bugsy Malone will be taking to the Bolingbroke stage on 8th-10th June – watch this space for tickets!
*In fact, numerous passers-by and audience members commented on the exemplary conduct and snappy
dressing of our pupils.

ARK GREAT DEBATE COMPETITION – 23RD FEBRUARY
By Mr Speight
Our debating team of Rae Madoc Jones, Salma Awale and David Farmanfarmaian (Class of 2019) and Jessica
Ward (Class of 2021) represented the academy at this prestigious event held at Dartmouth House, the head-
quarters of the English Speaking Union in Mayfair.
They acquitted themselves excellently and won their first two debates, on prepared
motions on expelling bullies and media reporting of the private lives of public figures,
with some ease. In the semi-final, debating the unseen motion ‘This House believes
people should have to pass a test on current affairs and politics in order to qualify
for the right to vote’, the team showed impressive focus, knowledge and analytical
acumen in the 20 minutes they had to prepare. However, despite a fantastic effort,
they were pipped by an agonising 0.5% by Helenswood Academy, who then went on
to overcome Isaac Newton Academy in the final to be crowned network champions.
We were not to go home empty-handed, however, and it was with great pride that
we welcomed the announcement that Rae Madoc Jones won the Best Speech award,
a phenomenal achievement at a very high calibre event that brought together the
top 50 debaters from across the network. In the words of the Ark organisers, ‘To
win this award for a speech in the non-prepared round is an incredible achievement
and is something she should be extremely proud of.’
The Debating Society will be holding weekly debates in the
Conference Room every Thursday from 4-5, and all pupils
are welcome to attend to get involved and to sharpen their
oracy and analytical skills. Previous weeks’ motions have
been “This House believes that all people of 16 and over should
have the right to vote in elections” and “This House would abol-
ish detention”, and next week we will be debating the mo-
tion “This House would ban violent videogames.”
CLASS OF 2021 – BATTLEFIELDS TRIP NOVEMBER 2016
We are organising an educational visit to France and Belgium and would like to offer our pupils the opportunity
to take part in a short trip to the WW1 Battlefields sites.
We will be travelling to France by coach on Friday 18th November 2016. We will spend the day in France and
Belgium and will return to school the same day at approximately 8.00pm.
The total cost of the trip will be £70.00 per person for non-FSM and £65.00 per person for FSM. This includes
the following:
All travel costs (ferry & coach)
Visit to Tyne Cot British Cemetery
Visit to the Yorkshire Trench (students will get to walk in trenches).
Visit to the In Flanders Fields’ Museum in Ypres
Visit to the Passchendale Museum
Visit to the Menin Gate
Visit to a chocolate outlet
Travel Insurance
This will be the first time many of our pupils would have been given the opportunity to visit the WW1 Battle-
fields and we have found in the past that trips such as this increase our pupils’ motivation and their enjoyment
of learning History.

“Orbiting Jupiter” – by Gary D. Schmidt
Joseph almost killed a teacher. Joseph was incarcerated at a place called Stone Moun-
tain. Joseph has a daughter called Jupiter and he has never seen her. These are the
three things Jack knows about his new foster brother. He does not know just how
much he will do to help his brother or how much will be asked of him when the time
comes.
I would recommend this book to all pupils who want to read a book that explores
love in all its shapes and sizes.

MATHS CORNER 11
News from Maths this fortnight
This half term our Year 7 and 8 pupils have been working really hard on their all important number skills. Year 7
have been showing their mastery of fractions and are now understanding how useful their bar models and manip-
ulatives really can be. It has also been lovely to see year 8 getting to grips with some really complicated percent-
ages problems and starting to develop an understanding of ratio. Year 9 have been stepping up their algebra
skills, from plotting linear graphs, to solving inequalities and simultaneous equations, some of the most challeng-
ing topics they will experience in Key Stage Three. Year 10 have been sizing up some new shape topics, finding
the surface area and volume of an array of brand new shapes including spheres and frustums!
This has been an incredibly quick half term and as we are rapidly approaching the end of the Spring term, pupils
will be sitting their end of term levelled assessments next week. All pupils will need to be revising everything
they have learned so far to give themselves the best opportunity to improve their levels. Good Luck to all of
our pupils!

Times Table of the Week…
We’re pleased to announce that log in details have been up-
dated and all pupils can now log in to www.ttrockstars.com to
either practise on their own in the “studio” or compete with
pupils across the country at “festivals”. Parents are encour-
aged to have a go too – it’s addictive! Have fun!
A note from Miss Banks…
As many of you will know I haven’t been in school
for a few days thanks to an unfortunate accident on
the school ski trip! I’ve really missed being in school
to deliver the lessons I’ve been planning but have
been pleased to hear how some of the pupils have
been getting on with their new topics. GOOD
LUCK to all my classes in their revision, and I will be
back as soon as I can. In the mean time if you do
have any queries or revision questions I am still
contactable on my school email address
P.S. Maths really is eve-
rywhere! Check out the
protractor on my leg
brace – it’s set to 60
degrees which lets my
knee make a 120 degree
angle! Exterior angles in
practice.
It’s that time of year again….the PI challenge!
The pupils have also been gearing themselves up for Pi
Day, coming up on 14th March (or 3.14 if you are in the
US). The heats for our traditional Pi
Challenge are taking place next week
ahead of the final in whole school
assembly. Pupils have been eagerly
memorising as many of the digits as
they can! The school record is 115
digits…will it be beaten this year?!
The red shape is con-
structed entirely from
parts of different circles.
What is its area?

NON-UNIFORM DAY
In aid of TACT
Ms Oliver, Ms Sherman and
their friend Hannah are
running the London Mara-
thon in April 2016 for
TACT.
To help raise money for
the charity, Bolingbroke
Academy will be having a
non-uniform day.
WHEN? Thursday 24th March 2016
COST? £1 per person.
WHERE DO I PAY? Payment must be made on Wisepay by Mon-
day 21st March.
Why Tact?
Children in the UK from more disad-
vantaged backgrounds need our sup-
port if they are to succeed. Only 13.2%
of children in care obtain five good
GCSEs and only 6% of care leavers go
to university. 1/3 of all care leavers are
NEET. This is compared to 13% of all
young people. Therefore the work that
TACT do is vital to help improve the
life chances of young people.
