Polly Farmer Follow the Dream students were excellent hosts at our tenth Birthday Anniversary at the Alice

Springs Desert Park during week 5, showcasing the range of experiences and enrichment activities through a

    short movie.

We were most delighted to see the support by families that joined in the celebrations, with over 200 people at the

event. Riley, Kendall, Matilda, Aaliyah and their families attended from Centralian Senior College Centre.

Maths and Science Centre of Excellence students from local primary schools presented their coding skills from

    their Lego robots.

Gillen Learning Centre students did a great dance performance, while the Bradshaw Learning Centre students

shared a video from their recent Robot Competition.

Centralian Middle School students Emily and Lauren were our excellent MC’s, whilst Alyssa and Tara offered the

Acknowledgement to Country. Declan and Tyler offered cool drinks from the fridge.

Michelle Francis, our program coordinator, having completed additional qualifications has taken on an early

childhood position at Larapinta Primary School. We thank Michelle for her work and wish her all the best with her

    new career direction.

John Cooper takes over the Centralian Senior College Follow the Dream and Study Centre portion of Michelle’s

    position.

Between now and the end of semester we expect many students can continue to benefit in the study space with

our tutors; take time to review learning and complete many learning tasks. Just turn up at 3pm for a snack, enjoy

the quiet learning environment while studying and a bus ride home.

As we complete the second half of Term 3, momentum continues to build within Clontarf. Week 6 saw Academy members engaging in a wide variety of activities and attendance is on the rise for the first time in 3 weeks. 39 out of 52 Academy members increased their individual attendance throughout this week and the net effect of that has been a 1.56% increase to 78.16% for the Clontarf Academy overall attendance.

The major event of the week 6 was the Clontarf Boys Night Out. We headed to the Red Centre Nats, Epilogue for Dinner and then Alice Springs Cinema to watch ‘The Dark Tower’ before returning to sleep over in the Academy Room. The following morning, Academy members got up bright and early to cook bacon and eggs for themselves as well as the other early bird Academy members prior to school.

During week 7, fifteen Year 10 Academy students headed off on our three day Year 10 Uluru Engagement Camp. The Academy members took ownership of getting their permissions sorted and were all set to attend. Engagement camps provide a great opportunity to build relationships with Academy members in a non-intrusive environment. Currently there are some issues that have arisen with a Year 10 cohort and this camp will provide a great opportunity to chat with them. What we want to see is a consistency in their positive behaviours of being respectful, using appropriate language and having a positive attitudes in all areas of their lives and within Clontarf.

During Year 10 Uluru Engagement Camp, Wednesday was an epic day. The theme of the day was based on 'resilience'. We started at 5:30am in bitterly cold conditions, watching the sunrise over Kata Tjuta and Uluru. After that we had a quick breakfast then tackled the 8.4km Valley of the Winds walk which was spectacular. At 11am we headed back to camp and the Academy members had to tackle lunch. It didn't take long and they had organised who was cooking and who was on clean up duties. A job well done! After lunch we headed into the town centre to a bush tucker tour. A lot of the guys had great knowledge about the bush tucker in the region and they spoke up in the tour, providing answers which was great. With weary legs and tired eyes, it was time for the next challenge of the day - the 10.4km Uluru base walk. This certainly tested the group and at this point some of the leaders shone. With positive attitudes, all of the fellas worked together and genuinely had a great time exploring 'The Rock'. We had our dinner which was again cooked by the Academy members and we headed to the ‘Field of Light’. An action packed, testing day of walking over 20kms and taking in the majestic surrounds was thoroughly enjoyed by all. James McNamee, Cheyne Miles and David Thomas - Clontarf Academy

A great end to the second day of camp at Field of Light, Uluru

Having a laugh on the Uluru base walk.

Meals are a team effort on Clontarf camps Everyone cooks and cleans!

An early start to watch the sunrise of Kata Tjuta.

As Term 3 draws to a close Clontarf continues to be a busy place. Our Year 10 students continued at VET, Year 11 students from the band ‘Juice’ performed in Darwin, we played in the RecLink RU OK Day and a wide variety of activities occurred with students accessing the program.

The Duke of Edinburgh is progressing well with: Dominic, Shawn, Trinity, Sabian and Elijah fully completing their Bronze award and a further 15 Academy members making significant inroads towards completion. Before the end of term we will be attempting to get as many participants up to date with their logging and completion. We are always looking for activities which participants can offer their services as volunteers, so if you know of any, please get in touch.

J is for Juice Year 11 Band Juice was a big hit at the Darwin Beat this year.

The NT Music School’s regional coordinator Nicole Quesnel said they were “fantastic, not only on stage but with all aspects of the event”.

“One of my favourite things they did was giving high fives to younger students waiting backstage before going on,” she said.

“They were fantastic role models for these students.”

NTMS teacher Caleb Goman agreed and said the band received great feedback all around.

“They were very professional and put on three terrific shows,” he said.

Juice also recently performed at the Yirara NAIDOC Celebration and is now rehearsing for the “I AM” Twilight Arts Festival here at the school as well as the Alice Beat.

Juice members are: Tjamuiwa Presley on lead guitar, Felise Naufahu and Ricky Bloomfield on vocals, Shawn Foster on bass and Brodie Roesch on drums.

In other music news, the Year 11 Music students have been working on a music industry unit with visiting musician Daniel Friel on staging, set-up, promotion and performance for the “I AM” festival.

The students were also treated to an extraordinary and inspirational performance in our theatre by electric violists and loop artist Quetzal Guerrero, or “Q” , as part of the Desert Song Festival schools program.

In Week 7 some of our upwardly mobile science students were busy finding out about the products of chemical reactions and the effect that some elements have as they react together. Pictured here is Deyarn and Matilda observing what happens when two apparently colourless liquids are combined and form a yellow compound. Year 9 Centralian Middle School students visited Centralian Senior College on Thursday 14 September.

This was their second transition visit to the College. They participated in a variety of activities designed

to build relationships with staff at the College. An added experience this time was a Science lesson

where the students conducted a scientific experiment. They also learnt more about the College’s

values and what subjects and VET courses they can choose in 2018, as well as reconnecting with the

    Clontarf and Girls Academy staff.

    Transition

    afternoon for

    CMS!

Learning Central played host to a group of Year 9 students from Centralian Middle School this week. We had a

    lunch and a craft afternoon.

Megan and Michael gave a presentation to the whole group about their Year 12 studies. They spoke very well

and explained what they have been doing in all of their classes.

After Megan and Michael had given their presentation, the students went and had their lunch that the Centralian

Senior College students had prepared for them. It was great because the students got to make up what they

wanted. They had the choice of either Wraps, Bread Rolls, various different meats and salads to put on them.

Once the students had their lunch they started on their craft activities which were putting stencils onto plain

white T-Shirts and painting them or making a print for the wall hanging

In conclusion the students enjoyed their activities and were recently back for another visit. The students were

happy to take their T Shirts home with them!!

With mid-term Work Completion reports being sent to families, Girls Academy facilitated discussions with the Year 10 girls as role models to their family and friends, their strengths and weaknesses and the importance of completing Year 12.

Visiting four stations the girls wrote responses to sentence starters and their thoughts on sticky notes. The girls then had a snow ball fight to mix up the notes, and picked two that they presented to the class for discussion. With each note read, the girls helped each other come up with plans to help each other and to do well at school. Some girls felt they weren’t a role model to anyone, so together the Year 10 students reflected on what a role model is, and ways to make positive choices. The girls also discussed why they want to finish Year 12 and what they plan to do after finishing school.

Erin Reilly & Robyn Liddle — Girls Academy

With the Year 10 students undertaking their VET courses during week 8, we ventured out to the Beauty Services classes to visit our girls. Robyn was lucky to get a manicure from Tallulah and face massage from Kendelle,.All came back to Girls Academy looking as beautiful as ever. We have been able to catch up with many of our Year 10 girls whilst on VET undertaking courses in Beauty Services, Hairdressing (Salon Assistant), Community Services, Retail, and Sport and Recreation which the girls tell us they are very much enjoying!

On Thursday 9 November the first ever school wide Arts Festival will be held.

The ‘I AM’ Twilights Arts Festival will be held on the College grounds between 6 and 9pm. An inclusive community arts event to bring together families and the whole school community to celebrate who we are. There will be live performances including from our award winning Year 11 band ‘Juice’, fresh back from their hit performance at the Darwin Beat Festival. A range of other bands and acts will also perform along with media films, dance, workshops and arts and food stalls. An interactive kids’ space is also planned.

The event is an Artists-in-School project drawing on the talents of film maker Harry Hayes, and textile artist Philomena Hali. Apart from learning skills in specialised arts areas like dance and media, the students will also develop skills in marketing, programming, stage management and event documentation. We welcome the involvement of families in this event, especially if you have a food stall that you would like to set up on the night. More than 400 years after The Merchant Of Venice was written,

the taut line between religious law or secular society, righteousness

or compassion, tolerance or hate, is still present today.

On Tuesday 19 September more than twenty students and staff from Centralian Senior College went to see the Bell Shakespeare production of “The Merchant of Venice”. This production of the famous play sought to give a more sympathetic depiction of the famous Jewish character, Shylock. The actors in this production balanced the use of humour, and of pathos in order to convey the different issues of this play. The students who went to see this play found plenty in this play to think about and discuss. They generally enjoyed the acting. Some liked the way Shylock was depicted. Many also enjoyed the humour of the clown Launcelot, and admired the spunk of the maid Nerissa. The ending seemed for most students to be inconclusive. Some were disappointed because of the way Shylock was treated by the other characters. Others believed that there was too much levity in the play, and that Shylock appeared to be too sympathetically portrayed in this production. In short, this was a stimulating and thought provoking night’s entertainment. Alex Marshall —English Teacher

The Northern Territory Back to School Payment Scheme Policy has been updated to provide better clarity around

the use of the scheme, including providing a choice of appropriate goods and services.

To further assist in understanding the scheme, supporting Guidelines and Frequently Asked Questions are now

also available on the department’s website.

The purpose of the Back to School Payment Scheme remains unchanged - to assist families with the costs of

getting their children back to school at the beginning of the school year.

The scheme entitlement is to the value of $150 of eligible goods and services per enrolled student and is

redeemable from the school at which the student first attends. Goods and services must assist with educational

    outcomes.

It provides eligible students with an entitlement to receive educational items in each school year, with these items

to be purchased only from the eligible student’s school. The scheme entitlement is not intended to support the

provision of standard curriculum or to redeem parent voluntary contributions.

In Term 4, 2017, you will receive information on how you can redeem the Back to School Payment Scheme for

    2018.

Another busy time as students continue to work well and complete their subjects. It is particularly pleasing for our Year 11 group to continue pushing to get the best results before the end of the year.

The Young Mums area has been busy too. Briar participated in the recent Baby Expo which was held at the Marion Centre. It was a good connection time for pregnant ladies and existing Mums. Over 300 people enjoyed our stall and a great range of other businesses which catered for this group.

    Till next time
