The weather provided a fitting backdrop
to a joyous and highly enjoyable Fair day
on Saturday. It is always interesting to
have fresh eyes look at events that have
been part of the fabric of a place for so
long. The reputation around Fair is very high and is completely
justified. The music, food, stalls and games were all wonderful but
what really set the day apart was the almost tangible sense of
community and pride. My thanks to the many, many, many
parents, students, staff and volunteers who gave up so much time
to make it such a special day and a special thanks to Christine
Fairclough for coordinating the event.
On Monday of this week students from classes 1-4 attended an
assembly presentation of the Dragon Play. Students from classes 8
and 9 provided not only the characterisation but had also worked
with class teachers and students to support them in learning some
of the main songs. The event was coordinated by the ever present
Mr Bernal. This model of older students working with younger
students to share and role model is one that we will continue to
develop next year.
Our senior students are now half way through the external
examination period. Our thoughts remain with them as they
navigate this intense and demanding time.
As summer approaches, the better weather and longer days also
herald the time for camps for many of our students. Class 6
returned just over a week ago from King Country, Class 7 return
today from Whanganui River and Class 5 leave for their Olympic
camp in Rotorua next week. Experiential learning gives students
the opportunity to grow in so many ways that can’t be quantified
within the regular curriculum. My thanks to all the staff and parent
volunteers that provide the logistics and time to make these camps
happen and to the parent community for their ongoing support
and understanding of the importance of these camps in the
development of students.
Ngā mihi

Dear community,
The Class 10 Play is rapidly approaching. Class 10 will be
performing a modern interpretation of an ancient Greek comedy –
Lysistrata.
Lysistrata is a very topical play for these times and tells the story of
a group of women who stand up to the patriarchal powers and go
on a ….’wife’ strike in order to stop a prolonged and ridiculous war.
Ancient Greek comedies were the first political and social satires.
(Think along the lines of Alec Baldwin’s satire of Donald Trump)
We chose this for Class 10 this year, as they are a class with strong
intellect and depth, who could get their teeth into the deeper
themes of the play. The class also felt the need to do a play that
was very outrageous and this play is most definitely that. The
Greeks loved to couch their deep social themes in outrageous
physical comedy, bawdiness and saucy comic banter. This will be a
very satisfying night of Theatre, with rousing songs …dance...ritual
…. broad comedy and very rousing heartfelt oratory. It is very
much a play that will speak to women of all ages and is very topical
in terms of what we see happening in the world today. It is
appropriate for class 7 and above.
Class 10 is currently a small class with many students away on
exchange at this time. This Class of 16 have produced a really
enlivening play that that should not be missed. Whaea Andrea’s
husband, Keith, has built us a striking set and the Auditorium has a
completely unique and individual feel.
For Michael Park Students going into Class Eight next year it is very
important for them to see this play and have an experience as they
will be doing in 2019. A picture paints a thousand words in term of
Drama learning and the more plays they see, the more they will
instinctively understand what is possible for them as well. For
those going into Class 9 it will prepare them well for the Comedy
and Tragedy Main Lesson next year. For those going into Class 10
in 2019, they will see the scale of the Class 10 Play, and for those
doing NCEA Drama, it provides a learning platform for Greek
Theatre. For the rest of you, I promise a very funny, compelling,
enlivening and relevant theatre experience. This will be a high
quality show and one that a group of parents would enjoy as a
night out without their kids. Greek Theatre is a unique Theatre
form. Part Musical/Burlesque/ Physical Comedy/Ritual and Social
Satire…it is really out of the box.
Please make a special effort to come to this Play, as I feel it is
important for this class. If the community turns up in force, then
our Class 10 students get given a unique and thrilling gift of a
bustling, full to the brim audience, and when it is your child’s turn
the community will turn up for them as well. The age restriction of
this play and the fact that so many of this class are on Foreign
exchanges makes it even more important for us to mobilize
numbers for these 16 Class 10 students. Please spread the word,
buy tickets and come along to support us. Please help us to give
these students an awesome experience that they won’t forget to
end the year with a bang. Thank you for your ongoing support.
Please feel Free to contact myself or Jane Patterson if you want to
enquire about the suitability of the play for a particular age group.
We are recommending Class 7 and above (13 years) as the story in
the play is a group of woman going on a sex strike to force their
husbands to stop a ridiculous war, although in Greek times there
were no females on the stage! Our 2018 version is ultimately
about female empowerment, bringing all our outdated way of
doing things into the light, and together creating a better world.
Heartfelt thanks,
Patrice Wilson

To the Michael Park Community
We had another awesome fair day on Saturday. The weather played its part, the people came,
everyone was smiling and the unicorn was again a star (huge thankyou to the Allsop family).
Thank you to all those who have been working all year behind the scenes such as the Doll, Craft and
Woodwork groups, Snapdragon shop, the families making fabulous prizes for the many games and
gorgeous items for sale, bringing in wonderful Silent Auction items, stringing sesame tickets, repairing
props, cooking beautiful food for the cafes, and of course posting the fabulous Facebook and Instagram
posts which took off again this year.
Thanks to Adrienne who plastered Auckland with fair signs and Mr Farley, Steve and Lyndle for putting up
the big signs.
Thank you to the MPS staff who worked extremely hard on the day and before - money running, sesame
ticket selling, helping with set up and pack down, counting, making maps and sesame tickets, handing out
flyers, making the school grounds look wonderful. doing rubbish duties on the day, organizing the fair
shed in and out, and running the awesome outdoor classroom. The admin team work 12 hours plus on fair
day and support everyone prior to that too – thank you!
Shawn the Electrician did a huge setup pre fair day again and is on hand through the day too, thanks
Shawn. Our stage on the day was led by Reb Fountain with Harley McIlveen providing the sound and it
was brilliant – the field in front of the stage was full all day – a huge thanks to you and your team! Our
students were fabulous on the stage and we are lucky to have so many talented students willing to get up
and do their thing, thanks to you all too.
We had parents and staff checking in stallholders and doing gate patrol from 6 am – thank you! And again,
we must mention the great organization of the Pre-Loved Clothing and Cake Stall – huge jobs and so well
done, thank you Natasha, Emma and Mary. Tala and his team loaned and setup the stage again – big
thanks to them.
Hope you all had a wonderful day and we look forward to getting the result out
soon. This year we are using the fair proceeds to purchase new outdoor canopies
for classes 6 and 7 and high school. We have already replaced the Outdoor
Classroom tent, purchased a new kiln and helped with the cost of installing the
kindergarten flow form. The new Auditorium foyer toilets are in and the lighting in
the auditorium is being worked on – all from proceeds of the previous two fairs.
On behalf on the Fair Group and the class Fair Coordinators THANK YOU
EVERYONE!
Christine, Adrienne, Brenda, Bob, and Joao
