While the cost of hiring coaches is considerably more than bus travel, we believe the cost is justified for the safety of the children when travelling on excursions. Maths Workshop Thank you to every parent and carer for attending the Maths workshop with consultant Carol Spencer on Wednesday. It was wonderful to have so many parents join us and wrestle with learning maths through understanding and not just rote learning as we were taught at school. For those who missed the session, we plan to include in the newsletter a fact sheet from Carol in the coming weeks.

Change of Contact Details To ensure that the school is able to contact families, would you please let us know throughout the year if there are any changes to your home address or phone contact details. Thank you for staying in touch with us.

Access to Gowrie In the coming weeks we will be asking that parents and carers access Gowrie Before and After School Care through the South Street gate only. This is to support the safety of the children during the winter months when the evenings get darker, earlier. We will let you know soon of the commencement date and times when these procedures will be in place. Thank you for your understanding.

Participation in Sport / PE As you know, sport and PE are mandatory aspects of the curriculum and all students are expected to participate fully in all activities. Even so, if a child has an injury, parents are asked to write a note to the teacher outlining the reason for not being able to take part.

With best wishes for the week ahead, Brian J Dill PRINCIPAL

FROM THE DEPUTY’S DESK

This week class 5D studied the poem “The Bushrangers” by Edward Harrington. They illustrated rhyming couplets from the poem using water colour.

It begins with: Four horseman rode out from the heart of the range, Four horseman with aspects forbidding and strange. They were booted and spurred, they were armed to the teeth, And they frowned as they looked at the valley beneath, As forward they rode through the rocks and the fern - Ned Kelly, Dan Kelly, Steve Hart and Joe Byrne.

Please stop by my office to see their outstanding classwork!

- Mika Dane and team advisor- Alexa Salmon.

It was agreed that the stand out speaker for the negative was Mads Vaughan who delivered her speech with great passion and expression. The Affirmative team’s stand out speaker was Lewis Walters whose factual evidence won them the debate.

Abbotsford was a wonderful host for the Affirmative team and were gracious in defeat. The Negative team was placed in a hard debate and took an unfortunate loss.

Thank you to our coaches, Ms Hill and Ms Gorham, and our drivers Ria Giann and Ceyda Dizdar.

st – Sienna Howard, 2

nd – Will Russ, 3

rd – Demitra

Hajistavrou and the team advisor was Laura Russ. The Farrer (affirmative) team’s speakers were 1

st – Ila Bains,

2nd

– Wendy Boland and team advisor was Abby Chan.

It was agreed the stand out speakers were Ila & Demitra. Congratulations to both teams on a great debate.

GARDENING CLUB UPDATE

Last week, members from garden club got to taste some delicious vegetables that we have been growing this year. It was really fun harvesting, washing and, of course, sampling some of these mouth-watering snacks, including French radish and Dutch carrots. The radishes were bright red and spicy and it was the first time that many of the students had tried a radish. The carrots were small but extremely delectable. Both were so easy to grow and would make a fantastic addition to any lunch box! We can't wait to try out some of the other vegetables soon.

If you would like to join Garden Club, please speak to Ms Favaloro, Ms Worthy or Mr Neufeld. New members are always welcome!

Enjoying healthy relationships has a tremendous impact on your child’s wellbeing and their overall success at school. Many children who experience behavioural problems at school have difficulty interacting with their peers.

Coach your child in positive social skillsChildren who develop healthy friendships generally have a definite set of social skills that help make them easy to like, easy to relate to and easy to play with. If your child is struggling to make friends consider coaching them using this three-pronged approach:

Be open: Some children close themselves off to forming new friendships, preferring to stick to one or two friends. Encourage your child to be open to forming friendships with a wide variety of children in and outside school and in doing so encircling themselves with many friendship groups

Be inclusive: Encourage your child to include a wide number of children in their games and activities rather than restricting the possibility of joining in to certain children. Healthy friendship groups are open and inclusive of others, while unhealthy relationships, such as cliques are restrictive, one-sided and full of gossip and criticism

Be aware: Encourage social awareness in your child. For instance, a socially-aware child would be discrete when giving out birthday party invitations at school, being protective and sensitive to the feeling of those not invited. This level of social awareness doesn’t necessarily come naturally to all children, but it can be reinforced by parents and teachers

Encourage friendships with both gendersThe primary school age is an ideal time for children to form friendships with both genders. This is particularly valid if your child has siblings of their own gender, or don’t have siblings. It’s through these early relationships that we gain the confidence to mix with different genders in later life. Forming friends helps to break down the mystique that can form, when a child has little contact with the ‘other’ gender.

Understand the impact of gender on friendshipsResearch shows that boys’ friendships groups are more inclusive and less changeable than friendships enjoyed by girls, particularly those in the eight to twelve year age group. Be prepared to support your daughter through the hurt of friendship breakdowns and remind her that new friendships are just around the corner. Help her reflect on her own place in a friendship breakdown, and be open to restoring a relationship once emotions are in check.

Remember, friends of a feather flock togetherIf you think that your child doesn’t have as many friends as a sibling or other children their own age, don’t be too alarmed. On average, children usually have only two or three significant friendships at any one time. It’s the quality rather than the quantity of friendships that counts. If you are concerned that your child lacks friends at school encourage him to take up a variety of extra-curricular activities. It’s easier to strike up a friendship with someone when you have something in common.

Above all else encourage your child to be friendly by talking to others, showing an interest in what other children do, offering help when needed and being willing to enter a new game or social situation. Consider teaching your child, if necessary, alternatives to fighting and arguing when there is disagreement and conflict within groups.

Dear Parents/Carers,

As part of the Physical Education curriculum, this term all students K-6 will be participating in a whole school athletics program organised by an experienced external provider, ‘Dancefever Multisport’ and preparing students for the Athletics Carnival in Week 8. Dancefever Multisport have been teaching physical education programs in primary schools since 1999 and are currently teaching in over 750 schools across NSW. Dancefever will provide two accredited athletics teachers who will teach the students a range of fundamental skills. Depending on your child’s class, the program will take place in the primary playground on Wednesdays or Thursdays starting on May 1 and 2 2019. Please complete the permission note below and return it to the school office with the payment of $45 by Friday 24 May. Funds are available to support families who are experiencing financial difficulties. Please contact the school if we can help. Thank you for your support of physical education at the school. 3 May 2019 Dear Parent/Caregiver, Students of Year 6 have the opportunity to participate in the Canberra excursion from Wednesday 21 August to Friday 23 August 2019 as part of their unit of work on Government. The cost of this excursion will be approximately $380, depending on numbers. This cost covers all entry fees to the Museum of Australian Democracy, Old Parliament House, Electoral Education Centre Parliament House, Royal Australian Mint, Australian War Memorial as well as a lunch river cruise. Students will travel by Murrays luxury coach equipped with seatbelts. Accommodation has been confirmed at the Sundown Motel with meals included, however students will need to bring all food and drinks for two small breaks and lunch on the first day. Financial assistance is available to support students to attend. A payment plan and further detailed information in relation to the itinerary will be sent home in the coming weeks. If you would like your child to participate in this excursion, please send the tear off portion of this note with $100 deposit to the Administration Office no later than Friday 17 May so that we can confirm numbers. Educationally, this trip supports and enhances the Year 6 Government studies. Students therefore need to:

Show high commitment to related activities carried out prior to and during the trip;

Strive to achieve the most from the excursion by actively participating in all planned activities. The personal development component of this three day overnight excursion requires each student to demonstrate self-control at all times. As well, students need to:-

Show tolerance and respect for peers, teaching staff and other adults in authority prior to and during the trip;

Follow the rules set down for the venues to be visited;

Demonstrate decision-making choices in the selection of appropriate behaviour at all times;

Use sensible strategies in dealing with any difficulties, especially concerning other students in the group. Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Kindergarten students are invited to participate in an exciting ‘Toys Over Time’ incursion being held in our school hall on Tuesday, 28 May.

Students have been learning about their personal and family history, and how things have changed over the years. In this incursion, students will discover how toys have evolved over time by exploring their movements, cultural significance and the materials they are made from. Student’s imaginations will be engaged and their sharing skills encouraged as they encounter examples of toys from as early as 2000 BC - the oldest toys in the world!

The cost is $13.00 per student.

This is an exciting opportunity to enrich the understanding of history for our young ones and encourage all parents to allow their children to participate in this incursion.

Please return this note by Friday 17 May 2019.
