- After a long summer, thelegislative branch of studentgovernment had its firstmeeting.

Butthey get only a card acknowledgingthem as a dean‘s list student.Student Body President BobbyJohnson Jr, updated the senateabout the progress made on gettingteacher evaluations published. Hesaid response was poor.“We had a low number ofstudents." he said. “We only hadfour or five fortns returned out of .1class of 200 students."Johnson also said he was nothappy with the coverage it got inTechnician."I was disappointed." he said. about the safety of the building.Housing and Residence Life

accelerated the schedule this summerto finish just the two buildings thatare now open. it makes you wonderjust how much the constructioncompany had to overlook in order tomove the residents in on the 20th ofAugust. To make matters worse. theresidents had not even had a fire drillyet.Many students did not hear the

alarm go off because the rooms weremade to be as soundproof as possiblesince they were once hotel rooms.

This is the first thing that should havebeen taken care of when the buildingswere purchased. There is no need fordorm rooms to be completelysoundproof Quiet rooms should notbe traded off for the safety of theresidents.This fire is not the first and certainly

not the only problem the Complex hashad. A third of the rooms are not yetready for residents and the other two-thirds of the rooms had mattresses toolong for the beds. The air conditionersw ill likely be replaced as well. Wireswere judged to be in good condition.but they obviously are not.Housing and Residence Life should

have been more honest with theresidents when they moved in. Theimportance of meeting a deadlineshould not override the safety of theresidents living there. The complex isno where near where it should besafety and living wise. Just becauseyou cati fit a bed in a room doesn‘tmean the room should be lived in.
