Friends reunite after 40 years through a collaboration between West Exe and Exeter Dementia Action Alliance ›› West Exe School and Exeter Dementia Alliance worked collaboratively to enable five care homes and sixteen residents to attend a morning event for Literacy Week at the School. Claire Palmer, Literacy Lead at West Exe said, “Oral literacy is important to develop, especially in today’s technology driven culture”. The Year 7 and Year 9 students, who were involved in the morning, viewed the experience positively and felt that they had gained a lot from it. Mrs Palmer felt it was wonderful to see the children develop their conversational skills with a much older generation, not just learning from them, but also enjoying their company. The children were genuinely interested in what their guests had to say and enjoyed sharing their own stories about what it is like to be a teenager in 2019. One child said, “It was a beautiful, heart-warming event and it will stay with me forever”. Gina Awad, Lead of EDAA said, “What a joy to be able to coordinate and participate in this wonderful community event, enabling several care homes to come together and have meaningful conversations with the students”. The event was complimented by a music interlude with students playing the violin and guitar, but the stand out moment for everyone was when two old friends, Margaret from Alphington Lodge and Irene from Parklands House, discovered each other, having lost touch over 40 years ago. Irene, one of the residents said, “I’m on cloud nine, I just can’t believe it and cannot wait to tell my family. We used to holiday together in Tenerife”. Gina commented on the touching moment with “This is just the start of the community work we aspire to in Exeter with schools and care homes, we look forward to developing lasting meaningful relationships”. Ten of our young, aspiring members of the Year 7 Reach Academy visited the Apple store in February to gain an understanding of the ways that apps are created to address growing social issues amongst young people.

›› The group followed the process that Apple believes is imperative to developing a new idea and ensure its ability to stand out amongst the competition. Through the use of i-pens and Keynote, our students began the process of developing new apps using their creativity and understanding of modern issues, which was very impressive!

We now have the beginnings of apps which can be used for a variety of reasons, such as supporting young people with poor study skills, to offering support to the LGBTQ community and those who suffer with mental health problems. Other apps explored were those which allow people to access music tuition easily, right the way through to apps which evaluate the impact of their recycling (or not!) on the planet.

Tomorrow’s Engineers Robotics Challenge›› In February, four WES students; Millie K, Patricia H, Joshua T and Bradley K all travelled to Arconic in Exeter to take part in this Lego based Robotics competition.

The challenge consisted of several tasks including team building exercises, a robot speed challenge and a table-top based ‘Robot Challenge’. This challenge required the team to build a Lego robot capable of completing a variety of tasks in the quickest time possible. The team also had to present the detailed design of their robot and show how they envisaged the robots being used in the future to help during an environmental disaster.

This was our first visit to the competition and the team performed extremely well, finishing third in the speed challenge and overall winners of the Robot Challenge. We finished third overall in the competition out of nine local schools. This was a fantastic achievement and we look forward to entering another team next year.

WES students attend Regional Maths Challenge

UK Mathematics Trust success›› Students at West Exe School have enjoyed another successful year in the Intermediate UKMT Mathematical Challenge. Students in Years 9, 10 and 11 achieved seven gold, eight silver and sixteen bronze certificates, with seven students being invited to take part in a further round, alongside the strongest 3% of students from across the country.

Ruby R, Oliver P-M, Hannah B, Kerry S, Thomas M, James F and Emily S all took the further ‘Kangaroo Challenge’ recently and we are currently awaiting their results.

The Junior Maths Challenge took place on 20th April – results are pending. Congratulations to all students who took part this year.

The Maths Team

A team of West Exe students excelled when they participated in the Regional Maths Challenge at Exmouth Community College.

›› Amelia W, Keane T, Toby M and Torin W-M showed off their problem-solving stamina through four challenging rounds of mathematical contests. Their first-rate reasoning was rewarded when they finished fourth in the region and came first in Exeter. Congratulations to the students for their excellent team work and perseverance.

›› Ten Year 10 students attended the EDF Energy Project Day, which was hosted at Cranbrook and delivered by various members of the public who work in the industry.

Students spent the day planning, coding and building a device that can safely remove a control rod from a radioactive fuel station. Students worked in two groups of five and had applied what they had learnt during the day to try and win!

One student involved said, “Attending these sessions allowed us to experience tasks and learn in ways we wouldn’t have been able to in school”.

Language Department

›› The Languages Department went away in February with over half of the Year 11 linguists to the PGL site in Osmington Bay, Weymouth, for a speaking revision weekend. With the sun shining and arriving to sea views – it may as well have been Spain!

Each day, the students took part in two revision sessions, targeting their listening and speaking skills in Spanish and French, both in the classroom and on the beach. We also had a go at two different outdoor activities each day including; archery, high ropes, abseiling, rifle shooting and climbing. A year 11 student said, “We practiced loads of Spanish at any time in the day. I had to tell them about my favourite film, whilst hanging off the top of the abseil tower. I won’t forget how to say it now!”.

Another student said, “I really enjoyed the weekend and I found it very beneficial, both confidence wise and it helped me with Spanish. It is something I would recommend as it is a great chance to build yourself as a person while you abseil down a tower!”

It was definitely a weekend to remember. Well done to our wonderful linguists for your hard work and enthusiasm, buena suerte and bonne chance for the speaking exams in May. We look forward to taking the rest of you when you get to Year 11!

Year 11 Languages Revision weekend in Weymouth

On Thursday 4th April the Languages Department and our students welcomed twenty Thai students for a school experience day. They were on a 5-week English course at the Globe Language Centre.

›› Our guests were brilliant and were looked after by our West Exe hosts in Year 9 and 10 who accompanied them to the day’s lessons. With Cycle 3 now in full swing, the guests experienced the full range of our challenging and exciting curriculum. The visitors even managed to witness the Year 10 French class performing their favourite French dance!

The knowledge exchange went both ways and by the end of the day, it was great to hear many of our students using greetings in Thai and even counting 1–10. It is always fantastic how many of our students are keen to take on these opportunities and how much they get out of the experience.

After six months, dozens of rehearsals, hundreds of doughnuts and more “a wop bam a loo mop and wop bam booms” than I could ever begin to count, the West Exe 2019 production of Grease is over! Thank you to everyone who came to watch one of the shows.

›› Firstly, a huge thank you to everyone who helped to make the show such an amazing success, including Mr Couzens, Miss Coombes and Mr Tyrer for all their hard work behind the scenes.

Secondly, to the awesome Pink Ladies; Miss Payne, Miss Carrington, Miss Edmonds and Mrs Fryett, for creating a fantastic American Diner experience during the intervals. Finally, the biggest thanks goes to Mr Salter, Miss O’Callaghan and Mr Bache for putting together a truly brilliant show!

Also, well done to our incredible cast, from established pros, to emerging stars. The cast have been totally professional and so supportive of each other. It has been a real privilege working with the students and I am so proud of each of them for what they have achieved.

Martial Arts Triumph for Clay and Kiera›› Clay M (7LKS) was selected for the National Championships of Jiu Jitsu.

›› Kiera T-N (7LC) currently holds the rank of 1st Kup (Black Stripe) in the Korean Martial Art of Self Defence.

Future West End star in the making›› Evie H (7IJ0) performed in 'Jack and the Beanstalk' at the Northcott Theatre. There was fierce competition at the auditions, but Evie stood out immediately. Evie demonstrated hard work and commitment and is thought of very highly by all with whom she worked throughout the performance. The show was seen by over seventeen thousand people.

Global Enterprise Champion›› Jena B (7RN) and her team of friends from Primary School won a Global Enterprise Competition to Seattle. They came up with the name for their products, 'Trendy T’s' and designed their T-shirts and branded them, this included sourcing materials online and designing profit margins. In February 2019, the team visited Seattle USA, which was funded by Microsoft. They visited the Microsoft offices where they made a presentation to the Microsoft Team. Whilst they were there, they went to the Space Needle, and some of the other tourist attractions. This was an amazing experience.

Qualifier to the BMX World Championships›› Evie W qualified to represent Great Britain in the BMX World Championships. Evie came first in one of her BMX races in Manchester. Evie successfully made it through to the finals and she is now preparing for this event in July.

Well done to the Year 7 students outlined below for their fantastic achievements. We are extremely proud of you.

›› In August 2018, a fifteen year old girl sat down with a sign outside the Swedish Parliament to protest against climate change. Greta Thunberg was on strike from school and her demands were to reduce carbon emissions through the Paris Agreement. This has grown to form the worldwide “Youth Strikes for Climate”, a growing movement of pupils and students who strike from school to peacefully protest against the lack of action concerning climate change.

On Friday 15th February, I took part in a “Youth Strike for Climate” protest in Exeter outside County Hall. There were lots of speakers including a six-year old child who talked about electric cars. The councillors were watching us through the windows of County Hall and waving. Some of them even came down to talk to us. After the speeches, we marched through Exeter to Belmont Park, chanting.

As under 18 year olds cannot vote, we need to work together to take more political action in other ways. I met a lot of people who have the same views as me, and it was inspiring to see how many young people really care about the environment and what is happening to the planet that we live on. There was an amazing atmosphere throughout the whole day.

A Pi Champion!Daniel has impressed everyone with his amazing ability to recall the digits of Pi to celebrate this year’s Pi Day.

›› Initially he wowed us all by learning the first 48 digits. In our Year 7 assembly, however, he smashed his own result and recited a jaw-dropping 124 digits. A massive congratulations to Daniel, we are very proud of you.

Life after WES and making the most of revision opportunities

Youth strike for

›› As part of the programme of events to help our current Year 11s prepare for their GCSE exams, five members of the Class of 2018 (Maddie W, Owen A, Sam T, Noah N and Elliot C) kindly gave up their time to return to West Exe and share their thoughts and experiences about life and Exeter College, as well as how to make the most of revision opportunities.

Talking to a group of around thirty Year 11s, they offered insightful advice about those daunting early days at college, as well as some genuine pearls of wisdom for the crucial months ahead.

It was a pleasure to see the Year 12s back with us again. Judging by the positive response from the Year 11s, their advice and guidance was greatly valued and will be both applied and shared. As a school, we would like to pass on our thanks to all five ex-students for making such a positive contribution to our continued drive for exam success.

Revision advice included:• Start revising as early as possible. Don’t try to

cram just before an exam because the content won’t ‘stick’.

• Don’t revise each subject for too long.

• Find revision strategies that work for you and stick with them.

• Use revision tools like GCSE Pod.

• Draw up a revision timetable and stick to it.

• Have a clear target for each revision session.

• Create your own revision resources such as flashcards.

• Accept that you will never know everything and instead try and learn as much as you can.

• Revise the trickier, less-familiar topics rather than always going over what you already know.

›› My name is Jessica. I am a happy, bright, funny and very intelligent 12 year old. My mum says I have a smile that lights up a room. I made an early entrance into the world and was born premature at 27 weeks, weighing just 1 kilogram. The doctors discovered I had a bleed into my brain and at the age of two and a half I was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy. I have Spastic Diaplegia meaning both my legs are affected in my case, severely and I also have some issues with my arms too.

Growing up with cerebral palsy has not been easy; I need daily physiotherapy to help stretch my tight muscles, I also have lots of hospital and doctor’s appointments. I have had two operations to release my tight muscles, one on my abductors and also in January this year, I had my hamstrings operated on.

As I am unable to walk, I also have problems with both my hips, my right hip is especially bad. In May 2016, doctors in Bristol fitted me with a Baclofen pump, the pump is implanted in my tummy and gives my body a slow release of the medicine – Baclofen. The medicine stops my muscles being too tight and makes it easier for my parents to look after me and I can do more for myself. Doctors told my parents they hoped it would stop my hip getting worse and me needing surgery. So far, it is working and my hips are remaining stable.

My physiotherapist told my mum about a new piece of exercise equipment called an Innowalk, it has been specifically designed for people with disabilities and looks a bit like a cross trainer but had lots of support to help hold me in the right position. I can exercise in it sitting down, standing up or just practice standing in it. It also has a remote control that I can use by myself to decide what I want to do. I have had two assessments using one and I just love it, it’s great being able to exercise like everyone else can.

There have been lots of trials done on kids like me to say that the benefits it can have on my condition are huge, it will help me build up my muscles and reduce my stiffness but also help with my digestive system which is impacted as I spend most of my day in my wheelchair. My parents want to buy me an Innowalk so I can use it every day at home, however they cost a lot of money and are not funded by the NHS.

We would be very grateful for your help in whatever way possible, making a donation, organising an event for me or simply sharing this page so more people hear my story.

Love Jessica & Family

You can help Katherine F raise money for this great cause by donating directly to their fundraising page https://www.treeofhope.org.uk/jessica-fairchild/

›› Although our National Parliament appears unable to agree on the best way to lead our country, our School Parliament is going from strength to strength!

We have our 45 MPs, one in each tutor group, who were elected in September to represent their tutor group’s views.

In December, the first School Parliament sitting was a great success, focusing on the ‘Community’ strand of our school values. All students discussed the strengths of our school community and MPs brought forward thoughtful proposals for how to

move our community, which our Head Boy and Head Girl, Jake and Bronwen, took to Mr Rutherford and the Senior Leadership Team to discuss.

Outcomes included; improving the range of activities/competition for our second House Week in February, reviewing the quality and style of our uniform and the emergence of our new ‘Equality 4 All’ group, which has done an excellent job of celebrating diversity across our school.

In March, Parliament gathered for a second sitting, this time focusing on the ‘Opportunity’

strand of our values. Outcomes included; discussion about more opportunities for off-site learning, the desire to have more speakers come into school to share their life experiences and career advice, a new whole-school sports day this year and discussion over a school welfare dog!

An enormous thank you to all our students for engaging in thought provoking discussions, the impact on our school community has already made an enormous difference, and we look forward to the next Parliament sitting in June, focusing on ‘Success’.

›› Gina Awad & Colin Bray from the Exeter Dementia Action Alliance were delighted to be at West Exe School recently, delivering Dementia Friends sessions to the Health & Social Care students. This is part of their on-going commitment to raising dementia awareness and taking action within the school and wider community.

Tim Rutherford, Head Teacher said “West Exe is very proud to be an active member of the alliance and partnering in initiatives which raise action and awareness for dementia as a school. As part of this, we have appointed a Dementia Friends Champion and endeavoured to make our site more dementia friendly. We have recently introduced appropriate inclusive toilet signage and will continue to host Dementia Friends sessions for students and staff. I look forward to furthering our involvement with the alliance and developing our action plan over the coming months”.

Gina added, “It was endearing how we were welcomed into West Exe by the students, they were all so keen to learn more about dementia and it was important for us to acknowledge the impact on families and

care partners. Having this knowledge is vital and one student asked, 'How can I talk to someone who lives with dementia?' which then generated a really useful discussion. Both classes personally put their hands up to thank us for coming in, it was from the heart, a true testament to the school."

Dementia affects around 850,000 people in the UK of which over 40,000 live with young onset dementia and are under 65 years of age.

Handball Club›› The Year 9 girls and boys have shown great commitment this term, training twice a week at lunchtime (Wednesdays and Fridays).

Their progress has been immense; they have played some matches but their performance at the recent Devon Handball Tournament in Bideford shows that they are an up and coming team. The club is open to new members and there will be extra sessions on Tuesdays at 3.10-4.00pm in the Sports Hall.

Boys were the only team to beat U15 Kingsley boys who went on to win the tournament. They won the vote of the crowd, being the underdogs and this helped them play an amazing game.

• Lost: 2 – 3 vs Axe Valley

• Drew: 1- 1 vs Great Torrington

• Lost: 2– 4 vs Bideford

• Beat: 4- 1 vs Pilton

• Beat: 7-6 vs Kingsley

Reuben was consistently outstanding and drew the attention of the scouts even in Game 1!

Jacob was solid in goal and made so many impressive saves. Vyron, Corey and Ben also impressed the scouting coaches! Considering this was the boys’ first competitive outing, they did not disappoint.

Girls were amazing and progressed through the rounds easily, only conceding one game to go into the finals.

• Beat: 3-1 vs Kingsley

• Lost: 1-2 vs Great Torrington

• Beat: 2-1 vs Torquay Grammar

• Beat: 3-1 vs Bideford

• Beat: 6-1 vs Pilton

This was no mean feat as they were the only Year 9 team in the competition. The girls worked as a unit. Everyone gave 110%. Scarlett made some amazing saves to keep the girls in contention and Emma’s shot rate was blistering. Ruby, Oriella, Ayanna, Ella and Bonnie worked tirelessly to break the defence down. Emily was the super sub! We lost in the final 2-4 to Torquay Grammar but the final was a real showcase with everyone watching and cheering us on.

Players of the tournament:

• Emma H, Scarlett W, Reuben P, Jacob O

Congratulations to Reuben, Corey, Vyron, Emma, Bonnie, Ruby, Oriella and Emily who were all scouted and several others invited to Devon trials!!

Hockey Teams›› Year 7 and Year 8 girls Hockey teams have resurrected the sport at West Exe! The popularity of the sport has seen up to 34 girls attend hockey training, which has not occurred for many years. The girls have been committed to training in all weathers and last week played their first game against Cullompton Community College.

We took a Year 7 and Year 8 team and despite a loss against far more experienced CCC sides, the opposition was very complimentary about our players in terms of their rapid progress and fair play attitude. It was a pleasure to take such a nice group of girls to an away fixture and the good news is, we have many more games planned!

Thank you to Toby and Jacob who have been helping with the coaching.

The girls have asked to continue training over the summer, so they are ready for the Hockey season in September! If anyone wants to join, then please do come on Wednesdays 3.10-4.30pm.

›› Evie is currently regional number 1 in her age category, national 9th place from last year, but is currently sitting in 7th place this year. She is the British number 8 and had qualified to represent GB in July for the World Championships, which is being held in Belgium.

She was recently racing in Rounds 3 and 4 of the European Cup being held at Circuit Zolder BMX track in Belgium, Evie had 68 riders in a double age category, so it was very tough as a lot of them are about two years older than Evie. Despite this, Evie did manage to make 1/8s on the Saturday and was in 4th place, a qualifying position to make the 1/4 finals but unfortunately, another girl made a move on the last corner and pushed Evie off the track, meaning she ended up in 6th Place.

Evie raced again on the Monday but crashed in the first Moto and suffered an even bigger crash in the second motto, resulting in her being stretched off and ending her day of racing. Evie did ride in the 3rd Moto but she only drove around as she was in too much pain.

The World Championships in July are at the same track, so this was practice for Evie. For those of you who know Evie, you will know that this will not deter her. It will not be long until she is back competing for the World Championships and we wish her every success. West Exe School is very proud of your achievements.

Sports Handball Tournament at Bideford›› What a great day we had and what a learning curve. Both teams were the youngest teams in the U15 group with other schools packing their teams with Year 10s. We only had one substitute each time due to spaces on the minibus, which put us at a bit of a disadvantage when other schools had 3-6 subs!

A new Devon Training Camp is starting at the Cranbrook Campus on Thursday 25th April 5.30-7.00pm (and subsequent Thursdays) and England Handball coaches will be available to support their development. Further details [email protected]

›› The West Exe girls football teams have been very busy during the spring term. The spring term fixtures started with a number of Ted Wragg Trust competitions with games being held at Cranbrook, St Luke’s and here at West Exe.

The U13 team, consisting of both Year 7 and Year 8 students, started the term well with an overall win over the other schools in the Trust. This was clearly a sign of things to come as we were able to enter two U13 teams into the Secondary School Games Competition held at St Luke’s Sports College at the end of March.

The results for both teams are as follows:

B Team:• Lost: 0-1 vs St James & St Luke’s

• Lost: 0-3 vs West Exe A

• Drew: 0-0 vs Dawlish

• Won: 4-0 vs Cranbrook

• The goal scorers were: Millie - 1, Chloe - 1, and Chelsea - 3

›› The U15 girls football team have also had some success. The team has had lots of players come and go this term due to other school and home commitments, but we always managed to get a team together to take part in fixtures.

The first fixture of the Spring term was a Ted Wragg Trust Tournament, and although we had the ability and talent, the girls came away a bit disappointed. Despite the initial disappointment, the girls managed a couple of wins and finished joint second overall. The next competition came only last week at the Secondary School Games and with the younger team already through to the finals, the U15s had a lot to prove and they did just that!

Playing their best football yet they achieved the following results:

• Won: 2-1 vs St James

• Won: 1-0 vs Dawlish

• Drew: 0-0 vs St Luke’s

• Lost: 1-2 vs Cranbrook

• The goal scorers were: Ella-Mae-2, Lara-1 and Lily 1.

They finished the competition 3rd overall and progressed onto the Devon Finals along with the U13 team.

We also took one team from Years 7, 8, 9 and 10 to the annual CVL Finals held at St Luke’s on Wednesday, 3rd April. Although the girls did not win the trophies, they all played some great football and showed determination in every game. A special mention must go to Emma H, who not only played amazingly well for her team, but managed both the younger teams (with help from the U15 team) throughout the competition.

Mrs Brown, Sports Coach said, “I am very proud that in my first year coaching the girls’ football squads they have achieved so much in the last two terms. We still have a chance to add to our achievements in May and I am sure that if they continue to work hard and play the great football they have previously, they can finish the school year on a sporting high. Well done girls!”

Girls Football

A Team:• Won: 8 -0 vs Cranbrook

• Drew: 0 -0 vs Dawlish

• Won: 3-0 vs West Exe B

• Won: 1-0 vs St James

• Won: 1-0 vs St Luke’s

• The goal scorers were: Freya-1, Ella -1, Alicia-1, Sophie-2, Olivia-3, and Tia – 3.

The A Team finished as overall champions of the competition and now progress onto the Devon County finals in Newton Abbot on Tuesday, 21st May. Everyone involved in the U13 squad has shown great commitment and hard work as well as playing some great football.

Annual Devon Golf ›› West Exe students represented the school in the Annual Devon Golf Championships held at Bigbury Golf Club on Tuesday, 2nd April. At this time, the team were the top performing team and will progress to the Regional Finals later this year.

Well done to Chloe H, Reggie R, Eliot B, Jack C, Ollie C and Jack T.
