NEW RULES ABOUT BACKYARD BURNING START 1ST APRIL

Folks,Following public consultation in July

2017, Council approved new rules aboutbackyard burning.

The new rules apply from 1 April 2018,where certain properties are allowed to pileburn dry vegetation from routine gardenmaintenance. Across the shire, individualproperties that are 4000 square meters andabove are eligible to burn, provided theproperty is not zoned medium density (R3)and all the burning conditions in the UrbanBackyard Burning Policy are met.

And burning must occur in line with theRFS Standards for Pile Burning. These dealwith things like pile size to ensure burning isdone safely.

Key points include:• Residents must give neighbours 24 hours

notice before they burn.• Only dead and dry vegetation can be

burnt.• During the Bush Fire Danger Period a

permit is required from the RFS or NSWFire and Rescue.

• Residents must also think about otherways to remove waste, such as regularlyusing a green bin.

• For other activities, such as hazardreduction burning and clearing fordevelopment, different approvals arerequired. To assist community understanding of

how the Backyard Burning Policy applies toindividual properties, an online interactivemap tool has been developed by Council. Please search for “backyard-burning” on ourwebsite.

GARDEN TIPS with GeorgeEach year when I am planning my

garden I peruse through the seedcatalogues that I purchased through thelast year to see what I would be able togrow that is something different. In a 2015publication from Missouri an article abouta corn species from the Incas of theUrubamba Valley of Peru talked about ablack corn which was grown to produce, when broken down, a drink which becameso popular that today the drink ‘ChichaMorada’ of the ancient Incas is stillconsidered the national beverage of Peru.

To us in a modern society we should tryto preserve the last crops of the centurypast. There are scores of corn varieties inall colours – white, yellow, gold, pink, red, maroon, green, blue, grey, black and multi-coloured in all of the above colours.

Everyone wants to be healthy so eatinga healthy diet should give the human bodywhat it needs to function each day, but isthat enough? Honey is showing manybenefits when consumed regularly and inthe right amounts. Studies are proving this!

Honey is made by bees and it naturallycan be kept for longer periods of time. Itprotects itself from bacteria so there is amuch better shelf life.

Honey is all natural and a few things thathoney has shown to improve on is —

Improving Memory: The Reuters Healthstudy used 102 women having them toconsume either 20 grams of honey, ahormone replacement, or do nothing. After120 days, the group of women whoconsumed the honey was able to memorizeone extra word from a list of 15 wordsduring a short memory test. Calcium in thehoney is much easier to digest too, helpingthe brain with function.

Healthy Stomach: Honey has anantiseptic property that has been found towork for bloating and indigestion. It alsorelieves gas symptoms.

There are many squash and pumpkinvarieties from the super large ‘AtlanticGiant Pumpkin’ which reach a whopping700kg to the tiny ‘Jack Be Little’ whichweighs only 250 grams.

There are people out there looking for‘lost’ varieties of ancient food sources thatare being lost to modern society, severalvarieties of melon have been found in theMiddle East and India, beans and squashfrom Panama.

To make the drink of Peru? Boil blackcorn, pineapple, lemons, apples, cinnamon, sugar and water. Apparently thetaste is a cross between mulled wine andDimetapp. How refreshing does thatsound.

Happy gardening everyone, ‘til nexttime. George

Lower Cholesterol: Scientific WorldJournal printed an article that showed thathoney lowered cholesterol by 3%. This wasfound after test subjects consumed 70grams of honey each day for 30 days. Alsoa study published in the Journal of Medicineand Food found an 8% drop in cholesterolin its subjects.

Better Skin: Honey works from the insideout for the skin. Honey is loaded inantioxidants that removes free radicals.Honey is also an antibacterial asset whichcan help with blemishes.

It has also been noted that Honey helpswith weight loss, strengthening the heart, better sleep, and improves the nervoussystem. There are many reasons to usehoney for its strong medicinal assets whichare being tested and proved every day.
