Jewish Numbers I was reading a passage in last week’s Torah reading, in parsha M’tzora. I came across a phrase mentioning the quantity needed for part of an offering as a, log of oil. According to the Jewish Encyclopedia, a log is equivalent to about a pint. The origin of the word is a little vague but what caught my attention was the letters are the same letters לג as in the first word of the holiday Lag B’Omer. Since that’s the next holiday on the Jewish calendar, it’s obviously been on my mind. Now the Lag in that phrase doesn’t have a meaning by itself but comes from a numbering system using Hebrew letters. Basically א aleph means one, בbet means two, etc. If you look at the Torah ark at PJC, you’ll see the Hebrew letters on the doors are really the first 10 letters of the Hebrew alphabet. After reaching 10, you add 10 plus 1, ( יא( to get 11. 20 is represented by the next hebrew letter כplus whatever single digit you might need. The next grouping is

May 2015/ Iyar/Sivan 5775 ל for 30. So we add up to 30 + 3 = לג , hence Lag B’Omer, the 33rd day of the
Omer. Now we also have our secular holidays designated by numbers such as the ‘4th of July’, or even nowadays, ‘9/11’. So too are other Hebrew noteworthy dates labeled with numbers - such as Tisha B’Av, the ninth of the month of Av or Tu B’Shvat, the 15th of Shvat. Recently Tu B’Av, the 15th of Av has become a romantic day, the modern Israeli equivalent of Saint Valentine’s Day. The number ‘Tu’ above is slightly different numbering from the system I just described above. It turns out that if 10 is a ‘yud’ and we add a ה, we get the first two letters for Gd’s name. To avoid that, 9 + 6 is substituted, thus טו, pronounced Tu. There’s more than simple numbering in using Hebrew letters this way, and as you might guess it has a deeper meaning, but I’ll save that for another essay. Finally, the number 49 is associated with this time of year and the holiday of Shavuot. Shavuot translated from Hebrew means ‘weeks’. It’s a week of weeks, 7x7 = 49 days. That’s the time between Passover and Shavuot and why and how we count the Omer. There’s also a 49 in the biblical Passover story. It is said by the Rabbis to represent the 49th of 50 levels the Jewish people had fallen to while enslaved in Egypt. The 49 days leading to Shavuot are supposed to be a time to raise our awareness and spiritual level. By the time we reach Shavuot, we will be ready for our spiritual high point, receiving the Torah on Mt. Sinai. Cantor Henry Shapiro

From the President’s Desk………………………….Robert E. Korfin In the past, I’ve wondered is anybody reading? Is anybody listening? Wait, I’m getting ahead of the story. A couple months ago, I ask if our members actually read The Scribe. I mentioned just last month about the condition of the driveway or circle at Parkway Jewish Center. The cold weather, the heavy trucks and other vehicles that come down our driveway have left us with nooks, crannies and holes that resemble the moon. About six years ago, I contacted the borough about helping us out and doing some spot repairs to the driveway. They came to our aid and did a nice job at the time. Over the years, the combination of the traffic that I mentioned above and the very cold winters and hot summers have brought us to the place where we need to get work done again. One of our Parkway Family read our newsletter and sprang into action. Shirley Holtzman Schwartz made a call to the Public Works department and told them about our situation. The bottom line…….Parkway Jewish Center has been put on the work list. Our driveway repairs will be fixed sometime next month. Many thanks to Shirley for springing into action for us. I’ve already referred her to Marty Griffin, the action reporter from KDKA. As they say in the business…..stay tuned. Cantor Shapiro will be traveling to Chicago to attend the Cantor’s Assembly Meeting. It’s kind of a Cantor’s Convention. Can you imagine 500 cantors singing in the shower at the same time? We wish him safe travel and a successful meeting. One more thing about our driveway….don’t let anything stop you from attending Shabbat Services. We would love to have you join with us any Friday evening or Saturday morning. The weather is terrific again and we even offer valet parking. And if you believe that….I have 3 lbs. of matzah to sell you. Last year we had a few barbeques at Parkway. They were either part of a Shabbat Service under the Stars or we just got together for a picnic. We’ve been using the same two charcoal grills. We decided enough is enough. Time to get with the program and move up to gas. So be looking for our new gas grill very soon. We’ll probably have a cookout to celebrate the new arrival just as soon as it gets here. Have I told you lately about our wonderful PJC website? Our editor, webmaster, and all around terrific lady, Linda Tashbook has my thanks and the thanks of all of our members. Check it out at: parkwayjewishcenter.org It’s spring, go out and take a walk, then we’ll talk again….

May 2015 Iyar/Sivan 5775 A* Pitseleh Oysgematert SALMON*
(The name is longer than the recipe, just so you know.)
A piece of parchment paper about 11 x 15. You’ll fold this in half the short way. Next to the fold you’ll put a piece of salmon fillet. Next to that put 3 or 4 pieces of fresh asparagus or broccoli or some green beans – (think green veggie). Nearby you’ll put a few pieces of a big potato or you’ll be fancy and get those little potatoes you don’t even need to peel. (This is such an easy recipe you won’t be oysgematert (exhausted) at the end!)
Now season the fish with a sprinkle of garlic powder, a sprinkle of onion powder, a shake of salt and a pinch pepper too. Just a pitseleh. On top of these seasonings you can put a teaspoon of brown sugar on the fish, then drizzle some Tamari or soy sauce, then a drop or two of olive oil, and finally, a squeeze from a piece of lemon. All this on the fish. Don’t worry the veggies will get some of this flavor as it’s baking.
Now here’s the tricky part: fold over the parchment paper to cover the salmon and veggies. Take a pinch of the paper’s edges and fold it tightly over all the way around the three edges. It’s like pinching pie crust and folding over. When you get to the last corner of the paper and you’ve pinched and folded tuck that end under the package. You should now have a nice little package that is tightly sealed. Put this on a baking sheet in a 400 degree oven, and bake it for 15 to 20 minutes depending on how thick your piece of fish is. The package will balloon in the oven. When you take it out of the oven, it will deflate. Let it sit for a few minutes. Then slit open the parchment paper, and spoon some of the gravy over the fish and veggies. You can serve it with salsa too.
*Pitseleh –pronounced (pit-se-leh, to rhyme with “fit sulla.” It means “a little piece.” 1. “And how is your darling pitseleh?”
*Oysgematert – pronounced (oyss-ge-mot-tert), to rhyme with Royce besotted. It means to be utterly exhausted, worn out. 1. After what he/she went through, who can blame him/her for being oysgematert?
What your guests will say after they eat this? Aha! Pronounced with a note of sudden comprehension, pleasure and triumph. “Ah-A That’s why they called off the party!” or “Ah-A! Then I win the bet!”
