April 2019 Adar II/Nissan 5779 Volume 23, Issue 1 May 5 th at 10 AM - Congregational Meeting to Discuss the future of PJC with the Membership. We want and need your thoughts. Please plan on attending. From Our Spiritual Leader Cantor Henry Shapiro We’re Still Here At our General Membership meeting in October and at another one a few weeks later, we had an impressive turnout, more than half our membership at each. We said farewell and thanks to Bob and Myrna for their leadership, contributions, and good fellowship that was so much a part of the shul for many, many years. We wish them well in Virginia and will hear back from them often we can be sure. Even though there were doubts about how Parkway would proceed, or if there would be another chapter in our story, the consensus at the meetings and since was that PJC is going to continue. Members signed up to contribute and organize to keep Parkway a going concern. Many made a commitment to come to services more often. We’ve organized a phone tree for special Shabbatot and when people need a minyan to observe a yarzeit. The result in general has been an increased attendance, especially for events. Our 2 nd Friday “Souper” Shabbat with Speaker series over the winter was very well attended and our Jazz Purim event was the best Purim turnout in many years. It was heartening to see more people coming and encouraging to see they brought some friends who are not members. Look for other Shabbat events in the spring and summer. Because this seems to be a successful combination, we will need some help to find, organize, and promote these programs. The next general membership meeting will be May 5 th at 10 AM to discuss the future of Parkway. From Our Spiritual Leader

Cantor Henry Shapiro

We’re Still Here At our General Membership meeting in October and at another one a few weeks later, we had an impressive turnout, more than half our membership at each. Our 2nd Friday “Souper” Shabbat with Speaker series over the winter was very well attended and our Jazz Purim event was the best Purim turnout in many years. It was heartening to see more people coming and encouraging to see they brought some friends who are not members. Look for other Shabbat events in the spring and summer. The next general membership meeting will be May 5th at 10 AM to discuss the future of Parkway.

April 12th “Souper” Shabbat - Alisa Grishman, Disability Activist and Patient Advocate. May 10th, Sisterhood Shabbat, 6-8 PM - Service, Dinner and speaker Rabbi Perman. Please make dinner reservations by …

Leslie Rubin Mezuzah Dedication - Leslie and Charlie Rubin attended the Minyan at the Center for Jewish Life when they lived at Princeton University. The members at the minyan made a donation to Parkway Jewish Center to be used to purchase something in Leslie’s memory. Two mezuzot were picked out by Charlie; they will be dedicated at 6 PM before the service begins on Sisterhood Shabbat. Please come and attend the dedication.

UJF Security Grant After a number of meetings with the security team from the UJF, and with a private security consultant and installer, PJC will be receiving a grant to purchase some equipment. The system we will begin with will include door buzzers, video cameras and panic buttons. It will take some time to purchase and install this equipment but the funds we will receive from the UJF will cover the costs we will incur. We will also be connected to a security monitoring company and with the Wilkins police upon completion. Thanks to members of our executive and security committees, and thanks especially to Alan Levine for researching and writing up the grant application proposal. Passover Service Schedule and Selling of Chometz Form - see attached flyer in this issue. OU Passover Guide - We have managed to get the OU Passover Guide in years past, a magazine type publication with not only a list of kosher-for-Passover products, but also interesting and informative articles about food and the holiday. They may not be available this year but there is an online webpage with all the information - https://oukosher.org/passover/passover-guide/ So You’re Leading the Seder (Maybe for the 1st Time) I was asked the following questions by someone who is leading their Seder for the 1st time. Where to get ideas and material? Can you add topical subjects? How to keep things short? Everyone ignores the part of the Haggadah after the Afikomen. Is there anything to do for that section? You’re in luck, there are more printed and online material, guides and ideas than just about any other published Jewish subject. In the library, in a bookstore, etc. There’s so much written that it’s easy to get swamped. My suggestions:

If you have enough of one Haggadah, use that as your main reference material. Supplement with other ideas that you come across.

Topical subjects are fine though it’s good to tie it in with some part of the story or seder when possible. There are tons of sermons online so you should find something relevant. www.myjewishlearning is a good place to start searching.

Delegate - If you’re feeling overwhelmed, delegate explanations or leading of a page or section. Try to give them out well ahead of time so they have time to think about this.

- Assign one topic ahead of time for participants to present. Such as when you come to the 4 questions, Plagues, 4 cups of wine, etc. Tell them to keep it short - one page or 3 minutes max. - If you’re not a singer, ask someone who is or a musical enthusiast to lead some of the singing. Some new melodies are appreciated as are the standards. Lots to find online. - If there are kids going to Hebrew school, ask them to help you out by singing something

they’ve learned at school and sharing some learning. You can always bribe by telling them you’ll give an give extra something when they find the Afikomen.

After the Afikomen? Sing! you don’t have to do every page and every verse but a few songs complete the evening nicely. I’m not a particular fan of the parody songs to the tune of something popular but one or two could be entertaining and that’s a good time. Other ideas? Wear costumes or decorate in a time period Make a little skit, act out a story, or recite a poem or mime !! Enjoy, have fun! Cantor Henry Shapiro

Passover Recipes Online There’s a wealth of traditional and new Passover recipes online. Most of the online recipe websites - Allrecipes, Epicurious, etc. - have a page dedicated to Pesach. Here are a few of them: https://www.bonappetit.com/test-kitchen/cooking-tips/slideshow/passover-recipes https://www.allrecipes.com/recipes/194/holidays-and-events/passover/ https://www.epicurious.com/occasion/passover https://www.myjewishlearning.com/article/passover-recipes/ Note: We will have morning services at 9:30 am on the 1st and last days of Pesach (both Saturdays), but not the 2nd day of Passover morning, Sunday, April 21st - check the lobby for flyers, our website at parkwayjewishcenter.org or our facebook page for any upcoming events - PJC Building News Princeton Drive recently had the Peoples natural gas line replaced. In the process of reconnecting our gas appliances right before Purim, 5 (of our 6) furnaces and our hot water heaters were ‘red tagged’. Fortunately we were able get our furnaces serviced and working. We replaced our two 15-20 year old water heaters with a new one. The cost of those repairs and new water heater, along with some other plumbing work, were generously covered by PJC Sisterhood. We can likely expect other old items and infrastructure in the shul will need maintenance and/or replacing sometime. Please be generous in the future when we ask for donations for these kind of needed repairs, upkeep, and replacements.
