FEBRUARY 2019 HAPPY WHEELS

I hope you and your family had a great holiday season. Between Thanksgiving and New Years Day we certainly kept busy with entertaining in our home to attending friends and family homes. We all survived with more wrin-kles from laughing than from frowning. And our 18 month old was so fun to watch. He really is a pretty good little boy, always smiling and reminding us to put things up out of reach.

Now that those holidays are over, Dick and I are able to pursue some of our many hobbies. He is busy in his work-shop making some really cool things. And I have dusted off my embroidery machine and put it to work.

I don’t know about you, but we are very eager to get on with camping. We are going to Montana this summer to visit some aging relatives. Our chapter camping schedule will be completed soon. The Wagon master is working on that.

I am busy preparing the programs for the three State events. There will be some new activities as well as those standing favorites. There will be food available at all three events like last year. The chapter skits and the talent show will also be a part of the programs. Please encourage your chapter to come up with a short skit. As you saw last year you don’t even need to talk and have a great skit. And the talent show will again be held this year in Cashmere. Please be a part of that as well. The word “talent” is stretching it for some of us, but we don’t care because it is so much fun. Please let me know if you want to be a part of the talent show and if your chapter is going to come up with a skit. Please encourage that to happen.

We have four new State Team members; Jody Mason - State Treasurer, Barbara Erickson - Happy Wheels editor, Kathy West - Ronald McDonald Houses, and John West - State Photographer. They will be introduced at Lynden. Please say ‘hi’ to them.

Dick and I look forward to seeing all of you in Lynden. Better come, who knows what you might miss. Registration forms are on the website, program will be there soon.

Stay warm and well to get to spring.

Both the Puget Sound VA Fisher House and the JBLC Fisher house send their Thanks and appre-ciation for all your efforts.

The Fisher House donations are down a little this year at $8997 compared to over $11000 last year, but other types of donations increased. The Canyon Sams really stepped up with afghans and blankets in addition to their financial contributions at Moses Lake. I had a challenge getting them back to the other side of the mountains. Seven large bags take up a lot of room in our RV and tow vehicle. Way to go, Canyon Sams. Every effort makes a great difference in people going through trying events.

In case you did not receive a Thank You for a donation, the Thank You may have come to me. Anytime cash is donated, I write a personal check to Fisher House. Sometimes even when I put a sticky note on the check with the address for the chapter who donated the cash, the volunteers still send the TY to me. I guarantee Fisher House received the money.

If you want to send your donations directly to the Houses, that is great, but please let Diana Supler-Varner know so your chapter receives credit in the yearly report.

Hope you all have a wonderful Fall and Winter. Look forward to seeing you in May at Lynden.

My oh my, where did the summer go?In September, Bob and I took a trip to Central Point, Oregon. While we were there, we got to meet the new CEO of Dogs for Better Lives. He comes all the way from Orlando, Florida. He was invovled with many programs for dogs. We also got to meet a couple of trainers. One of the trainers has been there for 14 years. There are now 30 dogs in training. Also, they have now started placing autism dogs in the state of Washington. WOW! The new facility is really amazing. They have three

large training rooms and 22 new kennels. The kennels are very nicely designed for the dogs. There are water hook-ups made especially for cleaning and sanitizing. They also have drains on the outside of the kennels with filters to make it easier to clean. Also, all the kennels have tops on them so the jumpers can't get out. They have 3 training apartments. In these, they have win-dows at the bottom of the walls. This enables the trainers to see how the dogs respond to their commands. They also have one apartment that is 2 stories. All of this happens from your donations. Many many thanks to all of you!!! A big thank you to River City Sams, Sandy Sams-also the donation in memory of Jim Campbell, Single Sams, Sounder Sams, Three River Sams, and Whatcom Good Sams for your donations at Cashmere. I really encourage you to stop and tour the facility if you are in the area. Have a wonder and safe winter! Roxie Holley (509) 430-9237 [email protected]

PARKING AT STATE EVENTSWe are asking all of you Good Samers attending the three state events to help out the parking crew and the Wagonmaster in particular. First, if you want to be sure to park together, you must arrive together. The parking crew does not always know where the rest of your chapter is parked. It is also a lot easier and quicker to park rigs at the end of a row than to park a rig between two other rigs. Also, if your chapter has a sign to post in front of your Rig Group at the various State Events, this would greatly help the Parking Committee. Second, we need a lot more helpers so that each person can work a shorter shift. Many of you could spend three or four hours helping with parking and also get the benefit of meeting some new friends. The more involved you get, the more fun you will have!Regular parking hours are 8 to 5pm. If you have a valid reason to park at a later time, please make arrangements with the Wagonmaster at 360.224.6183.

Driving along and find you need a rest room? There's an App for that!

RAISE IN STATE DUES

There have been some questions concerning the raise in the State dues from $5 to $10. This was a suggestion from a member in order to cover printing and mailing expenses for Happy Wheels.

The suggestion was sent to all chapter presidents as something that would be discussed and voted on at the Presidents' meeting in

Cashmere. The presidents then should have discussed the issue with their chapter members as the chapter determines what the vote should be at the State meeting. The vote in Cashmere was unanimous to raise the dues.

The State dues have been $5 since I have been a member. The cost of printing and mailing the Happy Wheels has taken a jump more than once since then.

OK, Christmas is now a memory and we are into 2019. Hopefully, everyone experienced a great holiday season and are looking forward to the remaining 2019 year.

We are now into our monthly dinner meetings hosted by the ladies of the Masonic Lodge and an outstanding dinner they prepare for club members.

Our camp outs for 2019 start in April and continue through September. Chief Wagon Master Tom Berschauer has been working diligently with our monthly wagon masters (April-Sep-tember) and they have put together a great spring/summer camp out pro-gram.

Unfortunately, health issues have not eluded us this winter as we lost member Janice Benjamin to cancer. She was a special person who we all cared deeply for and will be sorely missed. Our lon-gest termed member, Larry Philmon, is currently battling cancer. We all hope and pray for Larry as he struggles with this dreaded disease.

On a happier note, we are looking for-ward to the day when we can start get-ting our RV’s out of storage, packing them with everything imaginable and saying, “Let’s go camping!”

In the interim, we wish everyone good health! Be safe this winter, so that in the spring we can hit the road with the same enthusiasm as last year!

Cheney Good Sam'ersSubmitted by Nancy Curry

Cheney Good Sam’ers membership comes out of Cheney, Medical Lake, Tyler, Spangle and the south hill of Spokane. We try to get out at least once a month from April through October. Most of our trips are 2-3 nights, but we try to get in a loop trip of 7-10 days each year.

In 2018 our loop trip took us up into the north central part of Washington, Sun Lakes, Lake Chelan, Lake Wenatchee, Leavenworth and Wenatchee. Other camping trips last year included trips to Swan Lake near Republic, Kalispel, MT, Elk River, ID, Chief Timothy Park near Clarkston, WA, Steamboat Rock, Odessa Quilt Show, Marcus Apple Ci-der Festival, Little Diamond Lake and the Samboree in Moses Lake.

It was a fun year with a variety of out-ings.

Not much to report as its been the fall, the holidays and the dark days of winter and not much going on with an RV club in the way of campouts. We have our monthly meetings so we see everyone and that is always a noisy happy time to reconnect and hear about any exciting things some of us have done.

Our Wagon Master Don Parry is work-ing on our new campout schedule at this time.

We do have the three State meetings in our plans. Hope to see you at the State events and if your chapter does not make these a regular part of your schedules please talk to your President and Wagon Master and consider add-ing them. Its a lot of fun and the en-tertainment under the steady hand of Donna Amos, State Director, has and will be fantastic as always.

First things first – and that’s wishing ev-eryone a wonderful, healthy New Year! And then we go back in time to catch up with the last Group Outing of 2018, which was after the deadline for No-vember Happy Wheels edition.

Some wise person once said that “Group outings are for Eaters who like RV-ing”, which is the perfect descrip-tion for our last outing of the Season in Prosser, making it the 2nd time for our Group to enjoy and also the largest number of participating members. It was well-rounded event as far as food, drink, and fun is concerned. Wine Country RV Park handled the packed facility with great efficiency.

The 3-day activity calendar was packed, starting at dawn with Hot Air Balloons launching over and “dipping” into Yaki-ma River. Events all over town required keeping a daily itinerary to scurry from one end of town to the other, making sure not to miss out on great wine tast-ing offerings and local festivals.

Getting back to the eating thing, one can only describe this one as an eating orgy, not only at the group sponsored Happy Hour with appetizers, breakfast and dinner feasts, but every hole-in-the-wall local eatery someone discov-ered, including the obligatory 40+ fla-vors of ice cream. I believe this was the last HURRAH, before serious attempts at sensible diets were in the works…at least until Thanksgiving!

Very special kudos to our Hosts/co-hosts, who truly outdid themselves to organize this Group event, and feeding such a large group of hungry, but ever so grateful participants!

Other than all that fun, throughout the year our Chapter has been involved in supporting local charities like Dogs for Better Lives and Fisher House. And the tradition of monthly meetings, Ladies Luncheons, and Men’s Breakfast is a welcome chance for our members to keep in touch throughout the year.

OCTOBER – Most of the members were not quite ready to call it quits for camping this year, so they assembled at the Fidalgo Bay RV Resort. The weather was great, and the fall colors were at their brightest. We visited the Anacortes Museum, walked the Caus-land Memorial Park to see the Mosaic Fence and amphitheater built by the community. At the Maritime Museum we climbed all over the WT Preston Snagboat and learned what life was like aboard that boat during its 1939-1981 working history.

Tuesday evening Janet brought her banjo and played while we sang songs including the “The Great Pumpkin is Coming to Town”. The 2nd song was “The Twelve Days of Halloween.” Wednesday, we ate at the Calico Cup-board, great food. That evening several members wore masks and/or costumes. Mask costume winner was Jack Riggs for the funniest, while the most unique was Kitty Yam, she wore a horse’s head, Mike McDaniel, the scariest, and Na-dine Dawson was the prettiest. Bon-nie Kleid won the candy jar guessing game, (how many candies were in the jar)

NOVEMBER – We held our meet-ing at the Family Pancake House near Thrasher’s Corner. Larry gave a report on our upcoming trip to the Seattle Fisher House. This is located near the Veteran’s Hospital. Several of us toured the House and were treated to very in-teresting information about how the House can have members of a veteran’s family stay there while the veteran is in the hospital.

DECEMBER – Our Christmas Party was held at the Cedar Valley Grange near Lynnwood. We enjoyed a great potluck luncheon. After that we drew numbers and held a White Elephant Gift exchange. Santa’s little helper was unable to attend this year, so we all had to open our own gifts, more fun. We all agreed to hold our Christmas Party here again next year.

We had a great 2018 and welcomed 5 new rigs to our membership.

At the last State outing in Cashmere, our chapter hosted a Rock Painting Workshop. We had a great turnout and they painted some really fantastic look-ing rocks. Great job.

In October, 8 rigs met at Elwha Dam RV Park in Port Angeles where we en-joyed the crab feed festival in town. In November, 24 members went to the Auburn Senior Center for the annual Veterans Day Luncheon. It was great to honor and recognize all the veterans there that served our country. Decem-ber we had a Christmas Luncheon at the Golden Steer Restaurant with 27 members present.

We are looking forward to this years activities, first going to Eagle Tree RV in Poulsbo in March, then to North Whidbey RV in April followed by the Lynden State Outing in May where we will be hosting another silent auction. From Lynden many of us will be going to FunFest at Bonney Lake. Then later in May some of us will travel to Hope, BC for their Rally.

At the WA State Rally at Moses Lake in June, our chapter will be hosting a Gi-ant Jenga Tournament instead of the Cow Pie Toss. It should be a fun time for everyone.

After the WA Rally, some of us will be traveling on to the Idaho Rally in Lew-iston.

Our chapter is always looking for new members. We are an active chapter that can go out every month if there are members wanting to go. We nor-mally go out Thurs. thru Sun. so that our working members are able to at-tend, but we also may have an outing during the week. If you are looking for an active chapter to try, contact Dave Cluett chapter president, by email - [email protected].

10 HAPPY WHEELSFEBRUARY 2019

Good Sam SneekersSubmitted by Kathy Laird

Our last campout for 2018 was at the American Sunset RV Resort, Westport. The ladies enjoyed rock painting in the large clubhouse; guys played crib-bage and dominoes, and we all played games in the evenings. A new activity was “Find the Object” placemats – we had to find the pictures of objects and characters listed on the placemats in the very “busy” picture. It was harder than one might think! In addition to indoor activities, we walked the paved trail along the water, visited the marina and chuckled at the antics of the har-bor seals (whom we could hear bark-ing when we were in the campground!) and watched the dock fishermen. We ate dinner at a diner that specializes in milkshakes, many flavors that were among the best we ever enjoyed any-where.

We held elections at our October meet-ing and installed our new officers with a special ceremony at the November meeting. New officers are: Kathy Laird, President, Glen Hogg, Vice President, Kathy Elam, Secretary, Sue Hagdahl continues her two-year term as Trea-surer, George Foglesong, Wagon Mas-ter, Bob Stockwell, Assistant Wagon Master, Barbara Joy, Sunshine Lady, and Kathy Laird, Historian.

December is the month of celebrations and we held our annual Christmas Par-ty at the Elks with a special Ham Buf-fet dinner. The ballroom was decorated with a Polar Express theme adding to the festivities. We played games and enjoyed each other’s company during the party. A few of our members had already left for their winter get-away in the sun and more were heading out im-mediately or very soon after Christmas.

On a very sad note, we lost one of our long-term members, Len Hagdahl, just a couple of days into the New Year. He will be missed very much.

An anonymous source recently re-ported that every Thursday at 7:30 a.m. sharpish Chapter members enter Den-nys Restaurant and head directly to Dennys Cocktail Lounge! According to the source, there is a lot of physical contact and uproarious laughter among members as they greet each other from the privacy of the lounge! Before the media reports that our members are imbibing and carousing each Thursday morning in the bar, we’ll remind them not to publicize “Fake News!”

Actually, our Chapter Forefathers and Mothers decided it would be fun to so-cialize unofficially each week for break-fast in addition to sponsored events. They also agreed a hug is a friendly way to show we appreciate each other. Therefore, “Good Morning Hugs” be-came a welcome tradition. So if you are in Kennewick on a Thursday morning, we’d love to have you join us for hugs, laughs and breakfast at Dennys…in the lounge.

The Chapter’s Christmas party was held December 8th at the Clover Island Inn. Presents were exchanged between se-cret pals and there was a lovely buffet served.

Our Chapter was saddened recently, when Anita Wies’ husband, Robert Wies, passed away on November 19th.

Robert “Anker” Wies was a truck driver for over 48 years and had over 3 mil-lion accident free miles under his belt! Anker was always happy to help other members with their RV problems or questions. More importantly, Anker had a great sense of humor, told some awesome stories, and was genuinely loved by each and every member of our Chapter. MAY GOD RIDE WITH YOU TANKER 13…10-4 and GOODBYE.

It is with great sadness that we report the passing of three of our chapter founders and charter members. For-est and Marvel Stallings and Vera-Fern Holland are no longer with us. In 1990, a small group of couples started our chapter. It soon grew to twenty mem-bers. We are grateful for their contri-butions to our chapter as well as their friendship and they are missed.

We elected new officers for 2019 at our November business meeting. Gary Shewfelt and John Gilmore are Presi-dent and Vice-President respectively. They join Gloria Van Buren Hainline, Anne Remsberg and Lynn Stutzman as carry-over Secretary, Treasurer and Wagon Master.

Our Christmas party included a deli-cious meal, put together by all the great cooks in our chapter. Several members worked to decorate the social hall of Our Saviors Lutheran Church. We also opened exchange-gifts, one at a time. The originality and uniqueness of many gifts brought applause and laughter. We will celebrate Valentines day with an-other get-together for a potluck meal, playing cards and other games.

Our Wagon Master is busy organizing a summer camping schedule, and we are all looking forward to April, when we can again get into our rigs and head down the road. We join the other lo-cal chapters in sending an early invi-tation to join us in Cashmere for the state gathering later in the summer, and thank you for supporting our apple sales fund-raiser that has become a tra-dition.

River City Sams has room for a few more members. We encourage anyone in Chelan or Douglas Counties inter-ested in joining a chapter to contact Gary Shewfelt, (509.679.3916), or any other member for River City Sams.

HAPPY WHEELSFEBRUARY 2019

The Desert Drifters had a great 2018 season! We finished the season in Octo-ber with an un-scheduled camping trip to Wildhorse in Pendleton, OR, where 14 rigs were able to attend. Those that did attend enjoyed a little golf, a little gambling, great company, and great food. There was even a guided tour of Underground Pendleton. It was defi-nitely a fun time!

We are very fortunate to have the use of the Cherry Hills clubhouse again this year for our winter meetings. Thank you, Dale and Emily, for arranging this. This is where we enjoyed good compa-ny and delicious food for our Novem-ber and December gatherings and will meet again for January and February. December always includes the annual White Elephant gift exchange where you will find anything from practi-cal, delicious to comical gifts (some of which may show up as gifts again next year). You never know what you may end up with, but it’s always fun!

Each month we continue to collect non-perishable food and household items as well as money to donate to “Se-niors Helping Seniors” a local charity aimed at helping our local senior citi-zens in need.

This year the Desert Drifters will have a new Wagon Master. After 8 years of being our hardworking and extremely dedicated Wagon Master, Dale Eggan has decided to turn the reins over to Cindy Everett. Thank you, Dale, for all you have done! You have left some very big shoes to fill. And thank you, Cindy, for being willing to take on this chal-lenge.

Cindy has scheduled us for some new places in 2019 beginning with Crowe Butte in March, then on to new adven-tures such as Baker City, OR, Coulee City, and Westport, WA just to name a few.

We welcome 2019 and are looking for-ward to another fun-filled season!

Happy New Year, Safe Travels and Hap-py Camping!

The last quarter of 2018 ended with a fi-nal campout in October at Horn Rapids RV park in Richland, WA. We had 10 rigs and 20 members present with sev-eral guests throughout the weekend all joining us for breakfast. Our hosts, the Tolbert’s, really out did themselves! No one had to do anything but enjoy! Our high light of the weekend was a tour of the “B” reactor at Hanford. Later in the evening a friend of our member, Mark Morton who worked at Hanford came and gave us even more information. Card bingo, pinochle and the horse race game were enjoyed by all!

November was a luncheon hosted by two honorary members, Ruby Corne-lius and Faye Ives at Jackson’s Sports Bar. We had 17 members, 2 guests and 3 Honorary members present. After good food and the meeting we enjoyed sever-al games of Bingo. Honorary member, Carvel Eaton took home the bacon! She won the final game of bingo in a black-out, won the door prize and had her lunch paid for and ended up with the 1st place winnings of the 50/50 raffle!

Our final event of 2018 was our Christ-mas luncheon hosted by the Hogue’s at “The Whitehouse Cafe”. We had 17 members and 4 honorary members at-tending. We had the joy of welcoming members, Roger and Melissa Simmons joining us. It had been a long time since seeing them due to personal issues with Roger’s dad. Everyone looking forward to next year’s outings and luncheons.

Our first event for 2019 was our Janu-ary luncheon hosted by Dennis Boyd & Becky Buell at World Bistro Chi-nese Buffet. We had 17 members and 4 honorary members present. Everyone looking forward to all the great places we are traveling to in 2019!! Happy Camping to Everyone!

Happy New Year!

In 2018 our goal was to visit unfamiliar places we hadn’t been in the past and all in all I think we accomplished our goal.

Lilac City Sams had a wonderful 2018 and expects a great 2019.

We started off the year in April at Co-lumbia Sun RV in Kennewick Washing-ton.

In May we headed to Deer Park Wash-ington camping at Spokane RV Resort.

Boardman Marina RV in Boardman Oregon was our June outing and a first for many of us. We enjoyed this park on the mighty Columbia River so well that we put it on our 2019 schedule.

July took us to Grande Hot Springs in LaGrande, Oregon.

We found ourselves in North Idaho near Moyie Springs at Twin Rivers Can-yon RV Park for our August outing.

Sage Hills Golf & RV Resort was our destination for September, located in Warden Washington.

Chuck and Linda Ellis graciously had us to their Beautiful home in the Spo-kane Valley for a October Chili Feed.

Lilac City Sams continues with consis-tent membership of around 23 equaling about 40 people.

Special thanks to Don McCabe our past Secretary for many, many years. Don was always in attendance and did an exceptional job.

We now have a Facebook page for post-ing events and pictures. Search Lilac City Sams on Facebook to check us out.

We said goodbye to several members due to deaths in 2018, Brian & Melanie Smith, Terry Munro and Patricia Giba.

God bless and remember, “Life Is Best When You’re Camping.”

Fort Vancouver SamsSubmitted by Gay Rochel

As we see 2018 in our rear view mir-rors, we look forward to 2019 and “7” campouts with our good friends. We are so anxious to be on the road again!

Last qtr. of 2018 was also our last cam-pout. OCTOBER found us at Hee Hee Ilahee RV Park in Salem. This is one of our highlight trips. Doug and Ber-nie put on a fabulous Harvest Feast. Many members like to join in and lend a helping hand. Haven’t you heard of 10 hands being better than one? After din-ner they have us divide into two teams and we play “Pictionary”. It is such a good time.

We manned the Gee Creek Coffee Rest Area in October. It is as a fund raiser; however, members who work there come away with a feeling of being a Good Samaritan.

NOVEMBER starts our winter lun-cheon meetings held at Benny’s Rod & Custom Pizza Café. Denny Melton was presented with a trophy for having had the most points in our games held April through October. Congrats Denny!

DECEMBER we held our Xmas lun-cheon at China Cook Restaurant. Af-ter enjoying a very good meal we drew numbers for our “gift thievery” game? Thanks to crafty Hilda for the cute Her-shey Bar Snowmen numbering system.

Jeanne Browning took charge of keep-ing us in line... well she sure tried any-way!! Remember this for next year - lights seem to be a popular item - be it “ flashlights or night lights”. We shared tears of joy and laughter.

We at FVGS wish all of you a good 2019 and we’ll see you down the road. OH, one last thing for us to REMEMBER: A smile is a crooked line that sets a lot of things straight!!!

Driving the Happy Wheels News-bus!

State Director Donna Amos and former Happy Wheels editor, Jennifer Bockstruck, have turned the steering wheel over to me, Barbara Erickson, Roamin’ Wheels member. I truly appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this organization and be able to be of service. A BIG thank you to Jennifer for her help in getting me started – I’ll do my best to meet her high standard of professionalism.

Just a little about me. My husband Steve and I will be one-year owners of a RV on February 28. It was a spur of the moment decision, but we followed that up with joining Good Sam and Roamin’ Wheels. We have found that RVing is like boating (we had a 38’ C & C sailboat) – it leads to good friends, good places to cruise, and there is never a lack of food!

Last year we attended the Moses Lake and Cashmere Rallies, just to find out what it was all about. And we thank you all for making us feel at home and we encourage those of you who have not been to a state rally to go! We didn't have a clue what to do, fortunately our Chapter volunteered to provide the decorations for Moses Lake - so once a volunteer always a vol-unteer - that helped. I was invited to toss Cow Pies and play Bean Bag Baseball, so at least I began to know some new faces.

At Cashmere, we recognized a few more faces and they recognized us. I signed up to Paint Rocks. Now I had not a clue what this was about and it took me a long time to figure out how to paint my rock. But it happened and now everytime I see my rock, I have happy thoughts about Cashmere and you all! And the two boxes of apples made wonderful tasting apple but-ter. We are really glad we signed up!

This coming year, my boating meetings (yes, I still am committed to our boating organiza-tion) are in conflict with Lynden and Cashmere, so we look forward to meeting up with you at Moses Lake!

As for Happy Wheels, please feel free to send your articles or suggestions to me at [email protected] (preferred - please place HAPPYWHEELS in the subject line) or to [email protected].

I am itching to get on the road again! Hope to see you at Moses Lake!
