November 3 From the Great Fathers From St Ambrose's book on the death of his brother Satyrus We see that death is gain, life is loss. Paul says: For me life is Christ, and death a gain. What does “Christ” mean but to die in the body, and receive the breath of life? Let us then die with Christ, to live with Christ. We should have a daily fa- miliarity with death, a daily desire for death. By this kind of detachment our soul must learn to free itself from the desires of the body. It must soar above earthly lusts to a place where they cannot come near, to hold it fast. It must take on the likeness of death, to avoid the punishment of death. The law of our fallen nature is at war with the law of our reason and subjects the law of reason to the law of error. What is the remedy? Who will set me free from this body of death? The grace of God, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. We have a doctor to heal us; let us use the remedy he prescribes. The remedy is the grace of Christ, the dead body our own. Let us then be exiles from our body, so as not to be exiles from Christ. Though we are still in the body, let us not give ourselves to the things of the body. St. Pope John Paul II: Why We Need Both Faith and Reason by Carol Lynn Miller | Oct 3, 2019 | www.MagisCenter.com “Faith and Reason are like two wings on which the human spirit rises to the con-templation of Truth.” These are the opening words of “Fides et Ratio,” St. Pope John Paul II’s encycli-cal on faith and reason. In his encyclical, St. John Paul II addresses the vitally important role of both faith and reason in the pursuit of Truth. In a previous post on intellectual conversion, I mentioned that Truth is the object of the intellect. Aristotle sheds light on our attraction to Truth in his “Metaphysics,” proclaiming:

“All men by nature desire to know.” -Aristotle Built in our very nature is a desire to know about the world around us so that, ultimately, we may rise to an understanding of Him who is Truth itself. In “Fides at Ratio,” St. John Paul II explains that the search for Truth begins when we start to ask important questions, such as, Who am I? Where have I come from, and where am I going? Why is there evil? What is there after this life? He also says these questions pervade human life and are inescapable. Every person, by their very nature, desires to know the ultimate meaning of life and, in turn, also has a right to know. God the Father understands the human heart and desired to make himself known by entering history and becoming man. Now with Jesus Christ, the incarnation of Truth, we have a person to look to in our pursuit of Truth. Christ helps us see how Truth is not just an objective function of reason, but also the mysterious and loving power of faith. If you are interested in deepening your intellectual conversion, then “Fides et Ratio” can offer a guiding light and a helping hand. Within the encyclical, St. John Paul II will define and analyze faith and reason, proclaim why faith and reason must never be separated, and explain the role we must all play in salva-tion history with regard to proclaiming Truth to the world. You can read “Fides et Ratio” for free on the Vatican website: Vatican.va. The mission of the MAgis Center, founded b Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J. is to restore, reconstruct, and revitalize belief in: God; the transcendent dignity of every hu-man person; the significance of virtue; the higher levels of happiness, love, and freedom; and the real presence of Jesus Christ. Scrupulosity

Scrupulosity is an Obstacle to the Truth John Clark “You can’t handle the truth!” These words were spoken in “A Few Good Men,” a 1992 taut legal thriller about the prosecution of two Marines who accidentally killed another Ma-rine during a terrifying “disciplinary” exercise. Their defense attorney, played by Tom Cruise, sought to understand what exactly took place during the incident, and why it took place. His defense was that—though they did perform the actions in question—the Marines were ordered to carry out this heinous exercise by their Marine com-mander, played by Jack Nicholson. In a loud and heated exchange, the defense attorney yells at the Marine commander at the top of his lungs: “I want the truth!” The Marine commander screams back, “You can’t handle the truth!” Don’t worry—I’m not going to give away the ending. This isn’t a spoiler, and it’s not a movie review. I’ll leave that job to others. I relate the scene because this particular verbal exchange goes to the heart of truth itself. There are the truths we don’t want, and there are the truths we can’t handle. Through the window of conscience, we can view truths such as the morality of actions, the state of our souls, and our relationship with God. But if that window is smudged or broken, it affects how we see these truths, or fail to see them. Obstacles to truth: laxity and scrupulosity Truth is classically defined as “the mind’s conformity to reality.” Simple, right? Except that it’s not simple at all. There can be obstacles—both inten-tional and accidental—to the mind’s conformity to reality. For Catholics, these obstacles to truth come in different forms; on the level of conscience and our response to it, two big obstacles to truth are laxity and scrupulosity. In its most basic forms: laxity is the belief that nothing is a sin, or that sin has no practical consequence; scrupulosity is the belief that nearly everything is a sin. Both are the manifestations of a sickly conscience; both are obstacles to truth. At present, laxity seems far more widespread. In a 1991 speech, Cardinal Ratzinger (the future Pope Benedict XVI) explained that some people view conscience as “too demanding”; rather than listen to one’s conscience to follow truth, they consider conscience “the faculty that dispenses with

Lighthouse Talk of the Week Totally His: Living in the Love of the Father by Sr. Bethany Madonna Our weaknesses and our wounds can often make us feel inadequate. But as Sr. Bethany Madonna, S.V. illustrates with her insightful humor and profoundly memorable stories, bringing these weaknesses and wounds to God the Father can allow us to become strong with the Father's strength, and to be healed by the Healer. “The Father Himself loves you... He wants to be with you, at every moment; in every suffering, every pain, every desire and longing.” Parishioner Comments: “Sister Bethany uses a wonderful mix of humorous and heartfelt anecdotes to share the ways we can be closer to God, and His desire for each one of us."

How to go to Confession

In order to make a good confession, we examine our conscience, asking God’s help to know our sins and to be truly sorry for them.

R i te of Reconci l iat ion

Priest: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Penitent: Amen. Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been (say how long) since my last confession. My sins are (confess your sins). When you are done, the priest will give you spiritu-al advice and assign a penance. He will then ask you to pray an Act of Contrition, for example: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.

- or- O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they have offended Thee, my God, Who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve wit the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen. The Priest then says the Prayer of Absolution while the penitent listens. At the conclusion of the pray-er, make the sign of the Cross and say, “Amen.” Priest: Go in peace Penitent: Thanks be to God Complete your penance as soon as possible. If you were given prayers to say, try to pray them in church before departing.

Pasos básicos para confesarse

Entra al confesionario sin miedo, confiando en la misericordia de Jesús: Penitente: Ave María Purísima Sacerdote: Sin pecado concebida. Penitente: Bendígame padre porque he pe cado.

Continued from first page... body, but we must desire before all else the gifts of grace. What more need be said? It was by the death of one man that the world was redeemed. Christ did not need to die if he did not want to, but he did not look on death as something to be despised, something to be avoided, and he could have found no better means to save us than by dying. Thus his death is life for all. We are sealed with the sign of his death; when we pray we preach his death; when we offer sacrifice we proclaim his death. His death is victory; his death is a sacred sign; each year his death is celebrated with solemnity by the whole world. What more should we say about his death since we use this divine example to prove that it was death alone that won freedom from death, and death itself was its own redeemer? Death is then no cause for mourning, for it is the cause of mankind’s salvation. Death is not something to be avoided, for the Son of God did not think it be-neath his dignity, nor did he seek to escape it. Death was not part of nature; it became part of nature. God did not decree death from the beginning; he pre-scribed it as a remedy. Human life was condemned be-cause of sin to unremitting labour and unbearable sorrow and so began to experience the burden of wretched-ness. There had to be a limit to its evils; death had to re-store what life had forfeited. Without the assistance of grace, immortality is more of a burden than a blessing. The soul has to turn away from the aimless paths of this life, from the defilement of an earthly body; it must reach out to those assemblies in heaven (though it is given only to the saints to be admitted to them) to sing the praises of God. We learn from Scripture how God’s praise is sung to the music of the harp: Great and wonderful are your deeds, Lord God Almighty; just and true are your ways, King of the nations. Who will not revere and glorify your nature? You alone are holy; all nations will come and worship before you. The soul must also desire to witness your nuptials, Jesus, and to see your bride escorted from earthly to heavenly realities, as all rejoice and sing: All flesh will come before you. No longer will the bride be held in subjection to this passing world but will be made one with the spirit. Above all else, holy David prayed that he might see and gaze on this: One thing I have asked of the Lord, this I shall pray for: to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, and to see how gracious is the Lord.

Continued from page 3... truth.” A person can assault his inner voice of conscience so badly that it no longer dares to speak. Viewing conscience as a “signal lamp” to the soul, Cardinal Ratzinger says, “The fact that the signal lamp does not shine is the consequence of a delib-erate looking away from that which we do not wish to see.” While laxity means looking away from one’s moral actions, scrupulosity means looking at nothing else. While laxity refuses to blame oneself, scru-pulosity constantly blames one-self. While laxity silences the inner voice of guilt, scrupulosity screams. And that is no exaggeration. Consid-er the words of Father Alfred Wilson:

A SCRUPLE is often defined as “an uneasy and unfounded fear of having committed sin, based on feeling rather than on rea-son.” Scrupulosity is an obsession of the moral conscience (technically called a phobia) causing a state of acute anxie-ty. The scrupulous person lives in a spiritual fog which obscures all lines of demarcation between good and evil. Every moral issue which arises seems to present an insoluble problem. Whichever way the scrupulous look for a solution of their perplexities, their path seems beset with possibili-ties of serious sin. If reason says that a certain course of action is morally right, immediately a silly, nagging, interior voice pipes up that it is wrong, something at the back of their minds tells them so. Whatever the scrupulous want to do seems either wrong in itself or inspired by wrong motives. They are afraid to flout the nagging voice of the phobia, because they confuse it with conscience. -Alfred Wilson C.P., “Pardon and Peace”

After reading Father Wilson’s words, you might begin to understand why

Saint Therese of Lisieux calls scrupu-losity a “martyrdom.” Scrupulosity is almost never a choice While laxity often begins as a free will choice, it is important to clarify that scrupulosity is almost never a choice. It is far more likely to emerge from undesirable circumstances: an over-ly strict upbringing, psychological issues, or poor catechesis that re-gards scrupulosity—incredible as it might sound—as a healthy feature of the spiritual life. Scrupulosity is not only an obsta-

cle to truth, but also to free-dom.

And scrupulosity needs to be proper-ly addressed, both in the service of truth and the service of those who suffer from scrupulosity. Handling the truth Back to the salvo between Cruise and Nicholson—we must recognize that the worthy and necessary goals of the spiritual life are first, to want the truth, and second, to handle the truth. Again, that is easier said than done because it requires a three-fold con-version: spiritual conversion, moral conversion, and intellectual conver-sion. John Clark is an author, speechwrit-er, and a weekly blogger for the National Catholic Register. He has written hundreds of articles and blogs about Catholic family life and apologetics in such places as Seton Magazine, Catholic Digest, and Homiletic and Pastoral Review. A graduate of Christendom College, John and his wife Lisa have nine chil-dren and live in Virginia. St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church 6646 Addicks-Satsuma Road Houston, Texas 77084-1520

Pope St. Leo the Great November 10 St. Leo the Great was born in Tuscany. As deacon, he was dispatched to Gaul as a mediator by Emperor Valentinian III. He reigned as Pope be-tween 440 and 461. He persuaded Emperor Valentinian to recognize the primacy of the Bishop of Rome in an edict in 445. The doctrine of the Incarnation was articulated by him in a letter to the Patriarch of Constanti-nople, who had already condemned Eutyches. At the Council of Chalcedon this same letter was confirmed as the expression of Catholic Faith concerning the Person of Christ. All secular historical treatises eulogize his efforts during the upheaval of the fifth century barbarian invasion. His encounter with Attila the Hun, at the very gates of Rome persuading him to turn back, remains a historical me-morial to his great eloquence. When the Vandals under Genseric occu-pied the city of Rome, he persuaded the invaders to desist from pillaging the city and harming its inhabitants. He died in 461, leaving many letters and writings of great historical value. His feast day is November 10th. He is the first Pope to be called “The Great.”
