YACHT CLUB We hit the ground running in January with two great events. First up was our Post Holiday Blues Movie Night on January 9th. Thirty-one people showed up to watch “Captain Ron”! Tom and I love this movie and it had the desired effect on the crowd – it helped chase away those Post Holiday Blues. I want to give Pat Simp-son a big “Thank You” for organizing this fun evening for us. On January 15th we held the second seminar in our 2014 Yacht Club Education Series. A representative from the US Coast Guard talked to us about Hypothermia Is-sues and Emergency Contact Procedures with the Coast Guard. After this presentation two representa-tives from Customs & Border Protection (CBP) gave us a very informative lecture on Customs Clearing, Nexus & Immigration and patiently answered many questions from the audience. We ended the evening by raffling off a handheld air horn and two emergency whistles. Turn-out for this seminar was huge – 48 people attended in-cluding 12 non-members! As we’ve scheduled some of our education events during the non-boating season, we’ve heard from several of our “snowbird” members a request to videotape the educa-tion sessions. In response to your requests, we experi-mented by taping our January 15th event. Our intent is to put a link onto our BBVYC website then send out the link. Our members would then be able to view the ses-sion at their convenience. Stay tuned for more infor-mation! UPCOMING FEBRUARY EVENTS: Sat., February 8th, 10am – Yacht Club Annual Mem-

bership Brunch ATTENTION ALL MEMBERS AND NON-MEMBER BOATERS WHO RESIDE OR OWN PROPERTY IN THE VILLAGE: Please join us at the Clubhouse for our Annual Membership Brunch. Our wonderful Yacht Club Social Events Committee is plan-ning a mouth-watering brunch for you to enjoy while hearing all about the great cruising, education and social events that we have planned for the year. If you are not currently a member of our Yacht Club but own a boat and are interested in cruising, we invite you to attend this complimentary brunch event. You’ll get a chance to meet our members and fill out a membership application if you would like to join the club. Our initiation fee is $25

YACHT CLUB CONT’D plus a $25 annual membership fee. Members will have the opportunity to renew their mem-bership at the brunch as well. In order to renew, please complete the membership renewal application form (which was attached to the Membership Brunch invita-tion email) and bring it with you along with $25 cash or check. Members that aren’t able to join us for brunch or are out of town for the winter can mail their renewal to the address listed on the bottom of the renewal applica-tion. Please pay your renewal dues by February 15th to avoid a late fee. Doing so will also ensure that you’re included in the 2014 Yacht Club roster. If you have any questions about dues or the renewal process, please con-tact Priscilla Wallis. For food planning purposes, we ask that you RSVP no later than Saturday, February 1st if you plan to join us for brunch. Please email your RSVP to [email protected] or call me at 360-224-2260. Wed., February 19th, 7pm – Yacht Club Education Series Seminar: What Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Can Do For You – An Overview Jerry Martin, Division Chief of Medical Services Whatcom County Fire District 7 will do a presentation on the EMS capabil-ities/services in our area. Some of the topics covered will be stroke, heart attack and fall prevention awareness. There will also be a discussion of the new CPR and De-fibrillation techniques and tools to determine interest in an offsite class at a later date. Please note: The Feb. 22nd workshop listed on the 2014 Yacht Club Events Calendar is cancelled. As stated above, at the February 19th meeting we will discuss the possibility of an offsite class at a later date.

SAVE THE DATE FOR THESE UPCOMING MARCH EVENTS:

Wed., March 19th, 7pm – 2014 Yacht Club Edu-cation Series Seminar, “ Boat Electrical Systems & Stray Current/Galvanic Corrosion”

Sat., March 29th, 5pm – Spring General Meeting I’ll be sending out more information on these events soon. Dawn Baker - Commodore

GOLF NEWS Plan to play? Time to pay! – It’s a new year and the golfing at BBV is already good and getting better. There are several convenient ways to pay to play golf here—annual passes, 10-round play cards, per-round green fees, and an after-hours “Honest Box” day fee. Yet, in spite of the good and fair value available to residents and guests, some choose to avoid paying our modest course fees, there is a possible $50 fine and loss of privileges for any-one caught playing without paying. Is it really worth the risk? BBV Golf Club extends “charter member” deadline; still open to all – The new BBV Golf Club continues to expand its membership even during this “snow bird” sea-son. No surprise there…it is open to golfers, non-golfers, spouses and friends and the cost is only $5.00 (US) per person. And, now, everyone who joins before the first Annual Spring Meeting on May 9, 2014 will be a Charter Member and eligible for special acknowledge-ment. But don’t wait too long or you will miss out on ap-pearing in the 2014 BBV Golf Club Membership Roster, which will list the Club’s members, the dates of 2014 Club activities and more. Please give or mail the follow-ing information on each person and the $5.00/person fee to Ron Bogen (Treasurer), 8119 Comox Rd., Blaine, WA 98230: Name and complete address Home and cell phone numbers Email address; and, if you have it… GHIN Membership # (required only for some golf

events) Don’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity! Questions? Contact any of the following BBV Golf Club officers: Bob Simpson (President; 360-371-2636; [email protected]); Jim Macmillan (Vice-president; 360-371-2933; [email protected]); Anne Brown (Secretary; 360-392-0887; [email protected]); and Ron Bogen (Treasurer; 360-371-7350; [email protected]) for more information.

Winter golf activities continue – Don’t put away the “sticks” just yet! For those who did not flee the Village for warmer digs, we were blessed with a magnificent Jan-uary. There’s still plenty of fun golf and other activities to enjoy:

GOLF NEWS The “Monday Money Group” plays each Monday (weather permitting) at 11:00 AM; $10 entry fee with pay-outs for low-net individual, low-net team, skins and greenies The BBV Men’s Club still plays informally on Thurs-days at 11:00 AM (weather permitting) Winter reminders for all Non-golfers: The golf course may seem empty and inviting but we are still out there. Many new and less-experienced golfers “come out of the woodwork” at this time of the year to challenge the course and Mother Na-ture. So, please no walking, biking, playing, etc., on the course; don’t risk being injured or causing unintended damage to the course. Honor the Honor Box – If you don’t have a valid current Annual Golf Pass, and the Golf Shop is closed, you must pay the $10 day-fee. Day tags and pay envelops are available on the front wall below the locked Honor Box. It’s a bargain and not worth the risk of a fine and/or the embarrassment of being caught not paying. Golfers: The course is more prone to damage during the winter, so please: keep motor carts on concrete paths as much as possible; keep hand carts off tee boxes and greens; carry sand and fix fairway divots that you and others make; repair divots you find on green; and, when frost is present, do not start play until it melts. Help keep our golf course healthy and in good playing condition. And, please, respect private property at all times. Thank you! See you on the tee at BBV
