Term 3, Weeks 1 & 2,
2019
Dear Parents, Carers & Friends,
Welcome back to Term 3 at Blackheath PS.
We do hope you all had a restful break and have come back rejuvenated and ready for another busy term! As is always the case, we have many wonderful extra-curricular opportunities for your children this term as well as quality teaching and learning programs which have been developed by our talented staff.
Yesterday our students with Aboriginal heritage and some dedicated Year 5 Rosella dancers enjoyed a special NAIDOC experience. This was an opportunity for these students to learn about connection to country in our
local area with National Parks staff, in particular Uncle Chris Tobin. Thank
you to Mrs Gillian for organising the day, to Mrs Lamond, and to National Parks and Fantastic Aussie Tours who generously donated their staff,
time and buses. Today our Stage One students travelled to Sydney to visit Hyde Park, The Botanic Gardens and….
(drum roll) The Sydney Art Gallery. Wow how exciting! Thank you to Mrs Harris for organising this enriching learning experience and to all the wonderful parents who went along to help keep these young tourists safe. We are very proud of all our recorder and strings
performers who will participate in the Festival of Instrumental Music at the Opera House this week. In particular we wish Ginger F and Julia R all the very best for their solo performances. Thanks to parents for their support and to Mrs Lanyon for all her efforts.
Next Friday will be our Athletics Carnival. Please come along and assist if you can. It is a fun day and we can’t do it without lots of helping hands. Be aware of the recent changes to local roads. As this is an ongoing process it is important to be
diligent and keep abreast of continuing developments. There is no right turn into Leichhardt Street from the East and no right turn out of Leichhardt Street to the West.
Special thanks to Lean & Bennett Toyota for their
continued generosity to Blackheath Public School, and other schools in the
area, to whom they supply small plants and shrubs
every year as part of
National Tree Day.
Don’t forget the P&C Trivia Night which is being held in our school hall on Saturday 10 August. There are still some seats available, so visit https://www.trybooking.com/BDRSB to book
in. It’s sure to be a lot of fun and will raise valuable funds for our great school.
Warm Regards,
Jane Davies Principal

STRING AND RECORDER GROUP - OPERA HOUSE PERFORMANCES
Good luck to the school’s String and Recorder Groups for their performances at the Festival of Instrumental Music
at the Opera House on Thursday August 1st. These groups have been working hard all year preparing for this
concert, learning the challenging repertoire off by heart! They will be joined on the concert hall stage by hundreds
of children from other NSW Primary schools. An extra special good luck and congratulations to Ginger Foster and
Julia Ross (Year 5) who have been selected to play recorder solos in the concert.

CRICKET
Students in Years 3-6 had a blast learning
cricket skills from some fantastic coaches
courtesy of Cricket NSW on a beautiful sunny
winter’s day on the last Wednesday of Term 2.
Some lucky students won prizes for their
fantastic catching skills. This training will come
in handy for the Cricket Blast Cup in Week 5 of
Term 3.
STAMPS Do you throw away your used stamps? If so, please tear off the stamp and bring it
to Sue in the school office for donation to the Red Cross. Money raised by the
foundation is used to support under-privileged families in Australia
ILLNESS AT SCHOOL AND NOTIFYIYING
Please do not send your child to school if they are sick. If your child has been vomiting or had diarrhoea, they must not have vomited or had runny
stools for a minimum of 24 hours (even if they feel better) as they may still be infectious. Staff have only the best interests of our students at heart when we ask this so as to avoid outbreaks in classrooms. We also have children with compromised immune systems at school for whom contracting these illnesses can have serious repercussions. It is important for these students that they participate actively in the day to day school program without any major limitations. Towards this end another major concern is if these children were to develop measles, chickenpox, whooping cough or influenza so I seek your cooperation in preventing this situation.
If your child has, or may have, measles, chicken pox or other infectious illness, I would ask that you please: 1. Do not send them to school. 2. Notify the School Principal as soon as possible. 3. Take them to your GP or medical centre to confirm diagnosis if possible. Thanking you in anticipation, Jane Davies Principal
A gentle reminder that all payments MUST be in by the
due date on the note. Owing to our Department of
Education system we cannot process money that comes in
after the closing date. You may find that the online payment may seem to work as this is the bank ’s system but the money
cannot be processed for that event and will be put into credit for your future use. If finance is an issue PLEASE complete the
assistance form BEFORE the due date. You are more than welcome to reimburse us after the date.
PAYMENTS
Sue and Rhonda like to keep some spare uniform
items in the office and at the moment they are short on tracksuit pants, especially in the smaller sizes, and large jumpers.
Any donations will be gratefully be accepted.
SECOND HAND UNIFORMS
In a sea of red, black and yellow…
Our school and community celebrated NAIDOC Week in the final week of last term. We then came together on the last Friday of term to share the wonderful things we have been learning about our First Nations people and their culture. Students from all stages contributed to the NAIDOC assembly with art, songs,
drama and dance. Community members shared stories from the past and inspiration for the future. We would like to thank everyone for all the hard work and generosity of spirit that made this day such a special one.
STAGE 2 BATHURST EXCURSION
At the end of Term Two, Stage Two travelled to Bathurst for a day of adventure. We started
at the Bathurst Fossil and Mineral Museum where students were able to see a range of
beautiful minerals and handle some very special fossils. We then travelled to the Bathurst
Goldfields site where we were able to make damper and learn about the Wiradjuri culture.
Everywhere we went the staff commented on the excellent behaviour of the Blackheath
students.
Hi Blackheath Families, Welcome back to Term 3! Here's to hoping you got at least some rest over the holidays as you will need all your energy for our host of exciting special events!
Our Trivia Night is almost upon us, Saturday 10th August - and we have added three extra tables, so it is shaping up to be a big event! If you haven’t yet, grab some seats or a table: https://www.trybooking.com/BDRSB.
The BPS Disco kicks off on Friday, 23rd of August: the theme is 80’s Fluro, so pull out the old leg warmers and fingerless gloves and get ready to party!
Our other big fundraising event, the Obstacle Course Colour Run is on the 20th Of September. Colour Runs are super fun and a great way to raise much needed funds from the wider community to improve the educational outcomes of our
children. The link on the note wasn’t quite right so if you haven’t found your way there already, go to https://nfp.everydayhero.com/au/blackheath-public-school-p-c to start collecting sponsors!
Last but not least, our annual Father’s Day stall will be held on Tuesday, September 2nd,
between 9-11am. Gifts will range from $5 to $10.
Look out for the Term 3 Volunteers note coming home soon, and sign up to help at one of the many events this term. We also have a call for volunteers at the canteen, particularly that most excellent of times, Wednesday morning 8:30-9:00. Why not get on down to the canteen for some mid-week volunteer awesomeness! Remember, our P&C functions by the grace of volunteers working to ensure that we can provide more for our children by being a part of their education - meetings are only missing one person: you! Thank you to those of you who came along to our meeting on Monday night. The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, 23rd September, at 6.30pm in the library. Due to changes to our By-Laws, this will also be the night of our Annual General Meeting (AGM), where all P&C Executive positions are declared
vacant. It’s the perfect time to join the committee and take on a role- all the big events will be over and you’ll have time to find your feet before the new school year begins! If you can’t make the meetings, or want to find out more about getting involved, please talk to Morgan, Ally, Ali or Stuart at school or contact us via Facebook or email
Uniform News
