Drawing a parallel between hierarchical history and the modern schoolyard, You’re History! is a rollicking musical that will have actors totally rapt and their audience in stitches. International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program Personal Projects

Currently Year 10 students are busily engaged in completing their Personal Projects as part of the PLP in preparation for the Year 10 Graduation and Personal Project Expo which will occur on Wednesday 5th December. During English lessons this term, students will have additional support in developing the Personal Project report. One of our Year 10 students, Dodge Moore, is working on car bodyworks and motor restoration. As part of his project, Dodge submitted a short article to Chrysler Action magazine (see below). We were approached earlier this term by Lake Windemere CPC-7 School, our Partner School in the International Baccalaureate, about arranging for several of our students to come and talk about their Personal Projects. On Wednesday 1st August, three Year 10’s (Sebastian Morse, Robbie McNamara and Rodney Shaw) and two Year 11’s (Taylor Chesters and Maryanne Frost) presented to all the Year 6 and 7 students. Feedback from the Deputy Principal at Lake Windemere was that the students were “fantastic” and that it was the “best listening by the Year 6/7’s seen all year”. Many thanks to the staff and students involved. Adrienne Gregory - Assistant Principal

Vivomiles is coming to Salisbury High What is it? It is a web based rewards system which will reward students for positive behaviours. Our current referral system will be updated to use the new vivomiles system. It is an exciting program that will allow students to access their account and points

balance at any time, even from their phone or IPod. They will have a vast array of products available to them to ‘purchase’ online with their rewards card. Stay tuned for further information as Salisbury High School becomes the first school in South Australia to take this on-board. Vivomiles will be happening very soon!!!!!!! (If you can’t wait to find out more then Google vivomiles.com) Sylvia Groves – Deputy Principal

Flexible Learning Options Success Paige Francis has been engaged for two terms with Campbell Page FLO program. Congratulations

On 29th June I had the privilege of travelling to New Zealand on behalf of the school to attend Youth ANZAAS. I was one of 25 Australian representatives. Youth ANZAAS (The Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science) is an annual residential international forum for Science students in Years 10 to 12. Every year, students from each State are selected to participate in Science activities and experiences. It was a truly awe inspiring experience and one I will not forget. I experienced many things like the Anatomy museum which was a rare experience, a lecture with Sir Ray Avery, New Zealander of the year for his invention of technology to produce low cost Intraocular lenses, met the wondrous Stephanie Wilson, a NASA astronaut and attended a farewell dinner at Larnach Castle, the only castle in New Zealand, where we met the renowned Freemasons. Around these pinnacle events we sat through multiple lectures which further developed my love for Science, showing me a whole world of Science I was never aware of. I would like to thank the school tremendously for giving me the chance to go on such a life changing trip and encourage others to apply next year.

Mary ann Frost – Year 11

UniSA Maths Prizes Congratulations to Samuel Nitschke who was nominated and accepted to participate in this year’s inaugural UniSA Maths Prize. The award is for Year 11 students who demonstrate an interest in a mathematically-based career and who have achieved high grades in Maths subjects. The UniSA Maths Prize is designed to enhance students’ interest and knowledge of Maths through a one day ‘Experience’ at UniSA. The ‘Experience’ will provide students with a series of hands-on workshops, a career/industry session to discover mathematical-based careers and pathways to further education.

Mrs Ludewig – Maths Coordinator I was lucky enough to be nominated to participate in this program which started with a learning workshop. We worked in teams based on the tables we sat at and were given problems to solve. It was fun to collaborate with people my own age out of school. We didn’t always answer correctly but it was fun to learn together. Morning tea was provided and then we were shown around the campus, including the planetarium. Lunch was provided and we had more workshops afterwards. The day finished with talking to a range of Uni students and professors on where the world of Mathematics can take you, when the program was finished a presentation was held in which we were presented with a certificate and a $75 voucher. The day was a great experience and I encourage students to persist in their Mathematic skills as there are plenty of opportunities for students who excel in mathematics. Samuel Nitschke - Year 11

Congratulations to

What a great opportunity The Science Experience is a three-day hands-on science activities program being conducted in thirty- six universities and tertiary universities around Australia in 2012/2013. The programs, designed for students in Years 9 and 10 aim to inform students of the importance of science and technology, stimulate and heighten their interest in a wide range of science disciplines and career opportunities, encourage further studies in science, whilst at the same time giving them a ‘taste’ of university/tertiary life. Students interested in applying (you are guaranteed a spot if willing to pay the $110 fee) have until the 28th of October. Salisbury High School will cover $60 of the fee for up to 5 students, see Mrs Ludewig if interested. An interview process will occur if more than 5 students apply for financial support.

Italian Cultural Immersion in Central Market Ms Lopez Good’s Year 10 Italian class visited the Central Market for Italian cultural immersion. The students are studying Cibo (food) topic) and went to discover Italian produce available at the Market finding different Italian sausages, cheeses, bread, cakes and other goods that are truly of Italian heritage. The highlight of the excursion was the lunch as Mama Lucia’s restaurant which serves authentic Italian cuisine and sells Italian produce. As a treat they tried Enzos Italian gelato. Now they can say have truly embraced Italian food.

Khatija Thomas (Commissioner for Aboriginal Engagement).

Design Technology - Textiles In Term 2 the Year 9 Textiles Class created a single bed quilt. Each student sewed four individual squares to form one large square. These pieces were then used to complete the quilt. The end result was impressive and the students were proud of their achievements. The quilt made by these students has been donated to the Special Education Unit Basketball Carnival (being held this term). The quilt will be raffled off to raise much needed funds for the event. Students were able to create their own cushion cover using Patchwork techniques they had learned during the term.

Sport Open Boys Basketball On 25th August students participated in the Open Boys Basketball Carnival at the Gardens Recreation Centre. The boys played well winning their group games comfortably, with the main opposition defending champions Temple Christian College. The boys played Temple in the Final which was destined to be a close game. In the final minutes of the game the team was down by 5 points. With 30 seconds on the clock the boys got the ball and a good 10-foot shot put the boys up by 1 point with only 2 seconds on the clock. An unfortunate foul gave Temple the opportunity to make 3 shots and win the game by 2. The boys played awesomely and are congratulated on their efforts. Year 8-9 Boys Outdoor Soccer

Two Year 8/9 Boys Teams participated in the northern zone section of the Outdoor 5-a-side carnival at Ridley Reserve on Tuesday 31st July. Both teams and are to be congratulated on their efforts. They will play in the Finals on Wednesday of Week 8 at Underdale High School.

Northern Zone Netball Carnival

One of the teams secured a spot in the finals against Temple Christian College. The game was hard fought but Temple were too strong in the end running away with the game 22 – 7. Well done to all who participated.

In the closing weeks of Term 2, 10 budding young science students from Years 10 and 11 came together to take part in the Chemical Murder Mystery Workshop at Flinders University. The workshop was a hands-on look into the world of forensic science, and exposed students to many of the analytical techniques used by real forensic scientists in the field to help solve crimes. Atomic-Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS), Mass Spectrometry (MS), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) and several other acronym-friendly experiments were conducted by students in order to solve a fake/real case. Our Salisbury High students did exceptionally well, and were able to offer valuable information to help put the pieces of the puzzle together and solve the crime. I would like to extend my thanks to Rebecca Ludewig, Ricky Magnani, the Forensics team at Flinders University and the students themselves for making this day both possible and highly enjoyable.
