Dear All

The biggest sporting event has concluded. As a Nation our performance was

dismal with only two medals against our name. That the winners of both

medals belonged to women category is altogether different matter. Our

reaction was euphoric and is normal- relax in reflected glory. From some

quarters, their comments about capability of our women in general and their

problems need adequate recognition.

We should have clear perception about two things:

1. The adverse sex ratio has to be rectified. The proportion of males in our

population is too large for comfort. Barring a small percentage, the

quality of male population is poor. These people develop complexes and

try to ensure that women remain in the fringe. That some women have

succeeded and deservedly is altogether different and they should be

propagated as role model.

2. Women‟s meek acceptance of their secondary position in the society has

to change. A nation is evaluated by the quality of its population. The

quality of the men in a nation is dependent on the quality of the women.

A fact that most men find hard to digest. Status quo then becomes the

best option.

Men will not relinquish the power they wield. It is for the women to

decide whether to endure or prevail. To overcome ,a beginning has to be

made by the women themselves. They will ,of course ,have the support of

miniscule male population. Gender discrimination has to end. At every

level beginning from homes and extending to school ,colleges and work

places, the message sent out should be unambiguous. No half measures

should be accepted. It must become a movement. Logical movement will

yield logical results.

Mr. David Royster, Admission Counsellor from Yale-NUS conducted a career

counselling session in our school on 16th August 2016 in the A.V. room. The

session began at 9 in the morning and was attended by classes XI and XII along

with teachers. The institution offers courses in liberal arts which definitely helps

the students to broaden their horizon and take a wise decision in selecting their

academic discipline. Mr. David also stressed on the importance of non-western

centric education which is offered by Yale-NUS. Students found the session

extremely informative and interesting at the same time.

As per the Central Government circular, the children and the staff members of our school took active part in the event of

mass singing of the National Anthem at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday 23rd August, 2016. Amongst the children lot of enthusiasm

and patriotic fervour was noticed while singing the anthem.

Ms. Li Huan Lai and Ms. Caitlin from Fordham University, New York conducted

a career counselling session in our school on 17th August 2016 in the A.V. room.

The session started at 8 a.m. in the morning and was attended by students of

classes XI and XII. They spoke in length about the liberal arts course offered by

Birthdays are always remembered, celebrated and good wishes are showered upon the good soul. Our Principal's

birthday, 19th August, has always been a look forward to occasion for SCIS fraternity. Pomp and gaiety ruled the day,

from cutting a beautiful cake to a sumptuous lunch. Mellifluous songs by the PA Department filled the hearts of all. We

all wish him a very happy and long life..

Date: 9th August 9, 2016.

Venue: Hotel Hindusthan International

Time: 8.30 a.m. to 2.00 p.m.

Resource Person: Dr. V.S. Ravindran, a renowned educational psychologist and trainer.

Attendees: Principals, Counsellors, Coordinators and Teachers of schools from Kolkata.

Participants from South City International School: Ms. Dolly Chowdhury and Mr. Edwin Lawrence

The education fraternity assembled in the Topaz Banquet Hall of the Hotel Hindusthan International for an enlightening session regarding the myths

and conceptions associated with mental health, understanding the common Mental Health Problems and disorders, the casual factors and also the

strategies for preventing and Managing Mental Health Problems.

Mental health conditions can affect any person regardless of gender, age, health status and income. It was astonishing to know that about 75% of the

mental health problems begin before the age of eighteen.

Mental health conditions are not contagious, but research shows that some mental health conditions may have a genetic link. Bipolar disorder, for

example, has long been shown to run in families. Other people may pass on hereditary traits that make a mental health disorder more likely without

passing on a specific disorder. Children whose parents have a mental illness are at risk for developing social, emotional and/or behavioral problems.

An inconsistent and unpredictable family environment, often found in families in which a parent has mental illness, contributes to a child's risk.

A person is said to enjoy a positive mental health if:

he/she is capable of coping with stress

is in general state of well-being traversing on the path of realization of his/her full potential

involved in some kind of productive work

make small contributions to the society

It is important for schools to record the history of Mental Illness of the students. A drug addict may be genetically linked to early childhood

experiences. There should be constant monitoring and care from parents and help from teachers to overcome the trauma.

Creativity is a key to happiness. Encouragement should be rendered to children who may be suffering or are on the threshold of mental illness.

Various problems like Child Depression, ADHD, ADD, ODD, CD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Trichotillomania,

Tourette syndrome and eating disorders were discussed with symptoms and the actions to be taken in case of detection.

The concluding session was a Question and Answer session, wherein Professor Ravindan addressed to the questions posed by the delegates.

To the question put up by the delegates from SCIS as to how the aggression in young students could be curbed, Dr .Ravindrananswered, “It is

important for us to keep the students engaged with lots of physical activity. Physical aggression begins when a child in unable to express himself. A

child should be told that it is normal to get angry but expressing anger is not right. We need to develop communication skills in children.

Communication is ideal, for the child uses emotional feeling words to express and avoid aggression”.

The very informative and learning session was thus concluded. Sumptuous Lunch and distribution of certificates marked the end to the Regional

Summit of School Principals.

LIBERATION TIGERS OF TAMIL EELAM (LTTE)

For three days, the 4th, 5th and 6th of August, I participated in the Bosco MUN 2016 held at Don Bosco, Park Circus. I was a delegate of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil

Eelam (LTTE) which was a separatist militant organization responsible for the assassination of former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi (1991) and Sri Lankan

President, Ranasinghe Premadasa (1993). The LTTE's primary goal was to liberate the Tamils and attain an independent state for them know as 'Tamil Eelam' in

northern and eastern Sri Lanka. I was given the portfolio of 'Lt. Colonel Veeramani (Senior Commander of Charles Anthony and Tamil Tiger Northern Forces

Brigades)'. The clocks were rewound to the Idea of April, 1991 and the delegates received the agenda to discuss methods to destabilize the Indian and the Sri Lankan

governments simultaneously. Being a constant crisis committee, we received frequent updates about the security and decisions of our Thalaivar, Vellupillai Prabhakaran.

We proposed solutions to strengthen our army (arms, ammunition and weaponry) and also our finances. At one point of time, the committee was segregated into the

Intelligence, Artillery and Finance wings of the LTTE. We also faces numerous catastrophes regarding 'moles' in our committee who were secretly leaking our plans of

action to the government. At the end of the day, the committee united and managed to convince India to oppose the Sri Lankan government and help the LTTE in its aim

to make Eelam great once again. However, the session ended with the discovery of a third 'mole' in committee!

Portfolio- Commissioner of climate action and energy

The experience was absolutely new for me for this was my first MUN. I have to say that I had never been in such a formal environment before so I had to take time to get

used to it. Everyone was wearing suits and discussing crisis. I was just staring at them all. I was lost. But then some of the other delegates from different schools came up

to me. I recognized them, army friends. So I started asking them about the procedure. They helped me in every way they could. I did not speak much but I did raise

motions and I did get recognized. We took back lots of memories. We had entertainment motions where the Executive Board danced and performed. The second day was

full of new updates. The second day also had traditional uniform. We discussed world problems the best ways we could and also enjoyed ourselves. I will be looking

forward to the next MUN in Kolkata.

Being chaired by the secretary general himself, The Bilderberg Conference dealt with issues related to the economic problems of the world. Before the first session we

were given a time line of events from 2015 to 2017. Later the anonymous started to threaten the members of the conference, stating that he has hacked into our

communication lines. The committee was a great experience but failed to pass an action order against the anonymous.

Not being an active participant as being the first timer I observed most of the session. We were given a timeline of events from 2015 to 2017

which we were to follow in the committee. At the end of the day one of the representatives was suspected as a mole and was debarred from

the committee and one of the actions order was passed making the committee a successful one.
