WE ARE EASTER PEOPLE! “Do not abandon yourself to despair. We are the Easter People and halleluiah is our song”, said late John Paul II. But it is very difficult to believe this. For instance, just look at the happenings in the Kerala Catholic Church in recent weeks. You will think the devil has taken full charge of the church. Lies, betrayals, ego-clashes and sheer confusion ruled the roost. Look at the way the Jesuits have been dragged into the controversy in social media. Every content in the posts allegedly by Jesuits was sheer lies and concoctions. Posts were made in the name of non-existent Jesuits on absolutely unimaginable involvements. As Easter dawns there is hope that light will conquer darkness, albeit slowly. This then is our challenge: How do we live as Easter People? It begins definitely by going back to the roots. The Spirit of Jesus. Determination to live with integrity, peace and joy. We experience the joy of the Risen Lord and spread the same joy. It is also time that we ask whether we have become a Church lost in a cultic and ritual world forgetting the prophetic call. Or, is mindless activism replacing prophetic mandates? It is time we sat together, prayed together and lived the answers we find. The disciples who walked desperately the night after the crucifixion, and their turn around, are our model. Easter Blessings! M.K.George S J VOL. VIDYANIKETAN, TRIVANDRUMThe Juniors were striving hard during the month of March to do well in the ADF exam. Fr Emmanuel Arockiam helped us to relate ourselves to the Divine through a three-day course on Psycho-Spiritual Integration. The Loyola Sreekariyam

community generously extended an invitation to us all for a fellowship meal. We marveled at the beautiful campus and the warm hospitability extended to us. Thank you, dear fathers. The highlight of the month’s celebrations was Ugadi, which was clubbed together with felicitations extended to Fr Prabhu who had just returned

from Vijayawada after his Final Vows. We were privileged to be part of a massive blood donation camp. On Easter Sunday, our long cherished dream finally came true and we were able to celebrate a Hindi Mass for and with the migrant workers in Kochuthura Parish. Fr Deva presided over the Mass which was well coordinated by Fr Linto. It was the fruit of the labour of the juniors who were involved in the migrant ministry. As the Juniorate formation is nearing its end, we are gearing ourselves up for our next assignments with enthusiasm. We gratefully acknowledge that this year was indeed a blessing for each one of us as it equipped us well for our future mission.

SavyXAVIER TRAINING CENTRE, PACHILAKADAfter a wider consultation on Sarvodaya School, and after the province consult, our Provincial met each of the pre-novices personally. PIUS X ITI, EDATHUAA team from Xavier Institute of Management & Entrepreneurship (XIME ), Bangalore, consisting Mr. P.C. Cyriac and two others had visited our ITI some months back. They examined the class rooms, work areas, Labs, machines and other Instruments and gave suggestions for improvement. They asked us to prepare a list of our requirements and submit to XIME for consideration. At their suggestion the principal and some staff members visited the ITI at Thalassery. In the meantime, Mr. Kuncheria and Mr. Philp from XIME came and helped us to prepare the final list of requirements, which was submitted to XIME. With their assistance we have set up the computer lab and CADD Lab with 23 computers, tables and chairs. Later we also received costly instruments like Total Station, Theodolight and Auto Level. Till now we had been hiring these Instruments. Our Instructors (Draughtsman) are being trained to use these Instruments. Later we expect to get Tig and Mig Machines too that cost Rs. 18 Lakhs approximately…. Now it is our responsibility to protect these machines from dust and moisture, and to train our students with their help. The Province Development Team lead by Fr Joe Mathew visited the ITC and had discussions on its development plans. Our students went on an Industrial Tour visiting places like Kodaikanal, Madurai, Ernakulam and Cherthala. Fr K. P. Mathew left for USA on February 27 to visit his relatives and returned refreshed on March 22.

Mathew PullattuLOYOLA, MUKUNDARABefore the academic year came to an end, our drivers and aunts, were taken on a picnic under the leadership of Sch. Rojas. It was the first time such a programme was organized by the school. They visited Poovar Loyola too on their way and enjoyed the hospitality of Fr K.J. Thomas, Director of Loyola. The school has made a great leap by developing a Google spreadsheet-based

result analysis system which can help teachers to analyze the academic performance of students. Teachers can enter exam results using any smartphone, and the Principal and Manager can monitor the academic progress of each student from their laptops. The system allows teachers to prepare their lesson-plan and submit to the principal online. Teachers were given advanced training in the use of computers as a powerful teaching aid. The school is thankful to Sch Rojas for this technological innovation. Sch. Rojas was given farewell as he prepares to leave for further studies. Our school has received 150 library books as contribution from students who celebrated their birthdays this academic year.

ManeshJESA, SNEHARAM AND LOK MANCH A follow up meeting of JESA with participants from all centres was held at Thanmaya, Kottayam on Feb17-18. Kerala JESA has identified co-integration as the main aim of our work with our target groups. We resolved to modify the

action plans for the next year in the light of the evolving apostolic plan of the Kerala Province. Work for children with disability, work for community-based disaster management, and interfacing our target people with the mainstream communities for co-integration were identified as thrust areas. Accompaniment of about 100 students at Loyola Poovar in three batches for B.Com., and organization of Global English Learning programme under Jesuit Worldwide Learning (JWL) in Thiruvananthapuram were

acknowledged as significant moves under ‘Higher Education at the Margins’. Impact Assessment of Lok Manch is over in all the Units of Kerala. Lok Manch partners at Attappadi have been going through a harrowing experience due to the mob lynching of Mr Madhu from the target area of AKADS, a partner organization. Sneharam has been involved in a minor research on the disaster preparedness of the coastal communities of Thiruvananthapuram. Fr Benny and Mr Max Martin from Sussex University made a presentation before a select group of priests and lay people from the Latin Archdiocese of Thiruvananthapuram on setting up of community radios in the coastalal villages. The disaster management committee at Anchuthengu is in contact with the District administration for setting up a signal system at the Muthalapozhi harbour. We are looking forward to a State Level Conference on Community-Based Disaster Management at LES, Thiruvananthapuram on July 20 and 21. Fr Augustine Paruthipallil has started functioning as the Programme Director at Sneharam, and he efficiently moderated a discussion on ‘Community-based Disaster Management’. Fr Benny attended a core team meeting of Lok Manch and JESA at ISI Delhi in the second week of March.

Benny ChiramelSATYANILAYAM, CHENNAIOur academic life here is coming to an end on April 11. Our studies for the end semester exams and comprehensive exam are getting warmer like

the weather here; our comprehensive oral exam will be over by March 28. The second years went on a Pilgrimage to Velankanni after completing the work of dissertation while the first years relaxed at the Queensland. We were glad to have Mr. Jose Mohan, IPS, a close relation of Francis Paracka, to address us on “Awareness of Cybercrime and Cyber Security.”

E.P. MathewFROM EAST TIMORPeace and Joy of the Risen Lord! Having been able to communicate quite fluently in Tetun, I am fully and meaningfully involved in the life of East Timor. From January I started teaching Sociology (in Portuguese) and English(21 periods) in the Our Lady of Fatima (NOSSEF) HSS with 400 hundred students. This parish and school are entrusted to the Jesuits by the Dili diocese. As I am appointed chaplain of the 15 schools of the Ermera district, I celebrate monthly Holy Mass in all these mountain schools addressing over 5000 school children and students and their teachers every month. As you know all the students and teachers are Catholics and the religious formation is given mainly through the schools. On Sundays I celebrate Mass in two or three churches on the mountains. The liturgy is lively with polyphonic singing and the Altar children and scouts make the liturgy solemn and prayerful. Never before had I such a heavy and interesting work load and I enjoy the same. The two Indian scholastics are going back to their provinces by May. The RJM Sisters from Goa are starting a convent in one of our Mountain Stations. Happy Easter to you all!

Syriac PanjikaranGESU, ROME The second semester also witnessed a change in offices at the Gesu. And Rome is preparing for the spring after long days of shuttering cold and snow fall. On March 16 we had the visit of Fr General to our community. He celebrated the Eucharist in our chapel and we had dinner with him. After that we had the opportunity to interact with him. Some of our companions from Gesu got a special opportunity to serve at the altar for Pope’s Mass at the Vatican. Our third years have started their
