& GARDENS

CO-ORDINATOR OF MEET THE …

Karlene Wood has been the Shire of Carnarvon’s Coordinator of Parks and Gardens for 2 years now. With over 10 years’ experience as a horticulturalist, Karly hails from City Botanic Gardens in Brisbane (Brisbane City Council) and Fitzroy Gardens (City of Melbourne) where as Head Gardener, her park was nominated for, and achieved an International Green Flag award.

She is now the Coordinator for 10 workers responsible for open space maintenance, as well as cleaning. Karly prefers organics over synthetics and is working towards a sustainable horticultural future for the Shire. She also prefers otters over most other animals and enjoys red wine over white. Next time you see the tall blonde in hi-vis shire uniform, say g’day!

HAVE YOUR SAY ON OUR DRAFT STRATEGIC COMMUNITY PLAN!!

Following a successful community and stakeholder engagement programme,

a draft Strategic Community Plan has been developed and we want you to have a

look at it and give us your feedback.

We live in a special and unique part of Western Australia, if not - the whole

country! one that offers a lifestyle blend of our beautiful coastline and desert

outback providing endless opportunity for local and economic development.

Our objective in developing this plan is in ensuring that it’s focus is on Carnarvon,

Coral Bay, the community and it’s future.

The plan identifies the Shire’s vision and priorities for the next 10 years and has been developed with a strong

emphasis on the aspirations and priorities that were acknowledged through the Community and Stakeholder

engagement programme that took place in December 2017 and February/March 2018. Results can be viewed on

our Shire website.

The draft plan was presented to Council at the May 2018 Council meeting and we are now inviting community

and stakeholder feedback through our website under the ‘Our Shire’ section. Hardcopies of the plan and

feedback forms are also available to view and complete at our Shire reception, the local Library and

the Visitor’s centre.

The plan will be going to the upcoming June Council meeting for final adoption so to make sure we

have time to review everyone’s feedback and make any updates, we’re asking everyone to have

their say and give their feedback by 4pm, Tuesday 19 June 2018. For further information, send us an email to

[email protected] or contact Vivienne on 0478 728 962.

SHIRE SUPPORTS ANNUAL CARNAR-FIN FISHING COMPETITION

A highlight on Carnarvon’s social calendar is the ever-popular Carnar-fin fishing competition. Open to all recreational fishers, this event has been held since 1992 and with this year’s prize pool exceeding $25,000.00, competitors from across WA and Australia are expected to participate.

The Shire of Carnarvon will once again support this important event with a cash donation of $3500.00 in addition to providing secretarial support on the organising committee. Run as a not-for-profit event, Shire President Karl Brandenburg acknowledged the volunteers

and sponsors who keep this event running each year. “Without the support of local business and dedicated volunteers, this competition could not take place. We would like to thank everyone involved for their significant contribution to this popular event”.

The competition will run from May 28 to June 3 and apart from the regular tournament categories, will feature a fun fishing day for the kids. For more information on this event visit https://www.carnar-fin.org.au/

CARNARVON PUBLIC ART PROJECT NEARS COMPLETION

Recognising the significant contribution of the region’s pastoral community, the fourth public art installation is now complete. Serving both as an attractive landmark and a functional time-piece, the windmill clock located on Robinson Street also acknowledges the original Lion’s Club town clock and will welcome visitors to the vibrant café strip and shopping precinct. The French clock has been designed with a constant satellite connection with the Atomic Clock in Geneva, Switzerland so it is expected to stay in correct time. Shire President Karl Brandenburg thanked artists from the Fuse Art Collective for their creative input and professionalism in managing the project through to completion. The fifth and final piece is planned to be installed shortly and will pay homage to the fishing industry and culture and historic whaling industry that is synonymous with Carnarvon. The sculpture, named ‘Fascine Fishing’ will be located on the Fascine. For more information on the artists involved with this project, visit the Aartworks Development Program website at www.aartworks.org/
