Methods in Plant Histology BY CHARLES J. CHAMBERLAIN, A. M., Ph. D.

Instructor in Botany in the University of Chicago

SECOND EDITION ILLUSTRATED PRICE $2.25 NET, $2.39 POSTPAID

This book contains directions for collecting and preparing plant material for microscopic investigation. It is based upon a course in botanical micro- technique and is the first complete manual to be published on this subject. It is the result of several years' work with classes in residence at the Uni- versity of Chicago and with University Extension classes away from the Uni- versity. It aims, therefore, to meet the requirements not only of the student who has the assistance of an instructor in a fully equipped laboratory, but, also, the student who must work by himself and with limited apparatus. Free hand sectioning, the paraffin method, the collodion method, and the glycerine method are treated in considerable detail. In later chapters specific directions are given for making such preparations as are needed by those who wish to study the plant kingdom from the Algae up to the flowering plants. Special attention is paid to the staining of karyokinetic figures, because the student who masters this problem will find little difficulty in differentiating other structures. Formulas are given for the reagents commonly used in the Histo- logical Laboratory.

Quantitative Classification of Igneous Rocks Based on Chemical and Mineral Characters

With an Introductory Review of the Development of Systematic Petrography in the Nineteenth Century

By WHITMAN CROSS, JOSEPH P. IDDINGS, Louis V. PIRSSon, and HENRY S. WASHINGTON

THE BOOK presents in detail the new system of classification and nomencla- ture proposed by the authors. It contains a series of tables to aid in the calculation of mineral and chemical compositions of rocks, and a glossary of

the new terms employed in the nomenclature. Having traced the development of petrography during the past century, the authors discuss the defects of the present system of classification, the basis on which a proper classification must be made, and the construction of the system proposed. TIhe new nomenclature is then presented in full, including magmatic and rock names; and the last part of the book is devoted to methods of calculation, the tables, and the glossary. The book answers a need widely felt among petrologists in the last few years for a new petrographic system into which could be fitted the recent large additions to our knowledge of rocks. s86 pp., 8vo, cloth, net, $1.75 ; postpaid, $I.9g.

A Contribution to the Theory of Glacial Motion By THOMAS CHROWDER CHAMBERLIN

A SHORT treatise in which are discussed (i) the growth and constitution of a glacier; (2) the arrangement of the crystalline axes; (3) glacial tempera- tures; (4) the probable fundamental element in glacial motion; (5) auxiliary

elements; (6) corroborative phenomena. There are appended a bibliography and twelve half-tone illustrations. ig pp., 4to, paper, net, 50 cents; postpaid, 53 cents.

ANIMAL MIGROLOGY PRACTICAL EXERCISES IN MIGROSCOPICAL METHODS

By MICHAEL F. GUYER

Professor of Zoology in The University of Cincinnati

An indispensable book for teacher, physician, student, or novice who wishes to learn how to prepare his own mate- rial for microscopical examination. There are special chapters on the preparation and examination of embryological ma- terial, blood, bacteria, and objects of general interest, and on the collection and preparation of material for the microscopical work in a course in element- ary zoology. In an appendix nearly three hundred tissues and organs with directions for properly preparing them for microscopical study are tabulated. Sufficient account of the theoretical side of microscopy is given to enable the student to get satisfactory results from his microscope.
