The Authors

T.R. Balakrishnan is a professor of sociology at the University of Western Ontario. His research interests include family and fertility, immigration, ethnic minorities, and the sociology of cities.

James E. Curtis is a professor of sociology at the University of Waterloo. His current research includes Canada-international comparisons of social structure, analyses of social participation patterns in Canada, and a study of attainment of playing positions in North American professional hockey.

Edward G. Grabb is a professor of sociology at the University of Western Ontario. His previous research has examined questions of inequality and ideology in both Canada and the United States. His current research focuses primarily on comparing the values and behaviours of Canadians and Americans.

Bernard Schissel is an assistant professor of sociology, University of Saskatch- ewan. His areas of interest include youth crime and justice, social control, quantitative analysis, and medical sociology. His most recent publications include Criminal Justice: Sentencing Issues and Reform (edited with Les Samuelson, 1991) Garamond Press; "Women's health, labour force participa- tion, and lifestyles: Selected findings from the 1985 General Social Survey, Canada," with Harley Dickinson and Glen Andre, International Journal of Sociology.

Zheng Wu is an assistant professor of sociology at the University of Victoria. His research interests include marriage and family, demography, and social statistics.

LABOUR STUDIES

LabourlLe Travail is the official publication of the Canadian Committee on Labour His- tory. Since it began publishing in 1976, it has carried many important articles in the field of working-class history, industrial sociology, labour economics, and labour relations. Al- though primarily interested in a historical perspective on Canadian workers, the journal is interdisciplinary in scope. In addition to articles, the joural features documents, con- ference reports, an annual bibliography of materials in Canadian labour studies, review essays, and reviews. While the main focus of the journal's articles is Canadian, the review essays and reviews consider interational work of interest to Canadian labour studies. Many of Labour's articles are illustrated.
