TO THE READER Seanchas Ard hthacha is the organ of the Armagh Diocesan Historical Society, founded at a meeting of clergy and laity representative of all parts of the archdiocese

on 17 May 1953, when the Constitution of the Society was approved. With subsequent amendments it now reads as follows:?

CONSTITUTION 1 The object of the Society is to promote the advancement of education of the

public by the study of history, both ecclesiastical and secular, of the Archdiocese

of Armagh. In pursuance of this aim it is the intention of the Society to continue

to make a positive contribution to interdenominational understanding and to a

mutual appreciation and knowledge of the different historical traditions.

The object will be furthered by:? (a) the publication of a historical journal; (b) the reading of a paper concerning some aspect of the history of the

archdiocese at an annual general meeting;

(c) the formation of local groups which shall provide a suitable programme to

cater for the needs of their areas;

(d) assisting and co-ordinating the labours of individual workers in the fields of diocesan and regional history and in kindred or auxiliary subjects such as

toponymy, folklore and archaeology;

(e) co-operating with other societies engaged in like work.

2 The Cardinal Archbishop of Armagh is ex officio patron of the Society. Other patrons may be named by decision of the Committee of the Society. The Dean of

the Archdiocese is the President of the Society. 3 Membership of the Society shall be of two kinds:?

(1) ordinary members who shall pay an annual subscription, the amount of which

shall be decided at the AGM of the Society. (2) honorary members who shall be nominated by the Committee in recognition

of their services to the Society and who shall be elected by the AGM of the Society.

4 Each member shall receive a copy of the Journal and shall have the right of free

admission to all meetings and lectures of the Society. 5 The business of the Society shall be managed by a Committee elected at the

AGM.

6 Only members of the Society shall be eligible for election to the Committee. 7 The Committee shall consist of 21 members representative of all districts of the

Archdiocese.

8 Members of the Committee shall normally hold office for a period of 3 years. 9 One-third of the members of the Committee in turn shall vacate office each year.

Out-going members shall be eligible for re-election.

10 The Committee shall at its first meeting following the AGM elect an Executive consisting of Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer, Honorary Registrar, Publications Manager and Editor.

11 Six of the Committee shall constitute a quorum at any meeting of the Committee. 12 Amendments or additions to the Constitution of the Society shall be made only at

the AGM, provided that no amendment may be made which would cause the

Society to cease to be a charity at law. Notice of any such amendments or

additions must be lodged with the Secretary at least one month before the date of the AGM.

13 In the event of the Society being dissolved, any remaining assets shall not be distributed among the members but will be transferred to some other charity with

similar objects.
