ABOUT THE COVERS

Joseph Squier, The Anatomy Series, altered electronic images from Polaroid original, 8 x 10 in, 1994. (front cover) Anatomy Frontal, (back cover) Anatomy Dorsal. These images represent my continuing interest in the

body as a map, a metaphor and a repository; a storehouse for emotions; a structure upon which we construct our sense of self and a fragile vessel whose future is always tenuous. The Anatomy Series was one of my earliest

attempts to bridge the gap between my background as a photographer and my desire to explore the

potential of emerging digital tools. These and other images from the series can also be viewed at "the place" (http://gertrude.art.uiuc.edu/ludgate), where they are used as part of larger Web-based artworks.

Intellectual Property Rights and the Arts: The Impact of New Technologies

Texts to be published in Leonardo, Leonardo Electronic Almanac, and on the Leonardo World Wide Web Site

Leonardo, published bimonthly by the MIT Press, is a peer-reviewed printjournal devoted to technology and the arts. Leonardo also maintains an active electronic presence at its web site (http://www- mitpress.mit.edu/Leonardo/home.html) and through the on-line journal Leonardo Electronic Almanac.

New digital/electronic technologies are influencing the creation, presentation and dissemination of visual, sound and multimedia art, as well as print publications.

These changes may drastically affect the viability of traditional systems of intellectual property rights, creating predicaments for both the ownership of art and methods of securing remuneration for artists and authors.

The editors of Leonardo are issuing a call for submissions addressing legal, institutional, technical, sociological and artistic issues relating to property and compensation as implicated by the use of electronic technologies in the arts.

The editors are interested in original submissions from the legal, creative and technical communities.

Relevant subjects include:

* New mechanisms to provide "fair" compensation to the creators of new art in new media * Legal issues arising for art created in and distributed via new media (e.g. CD-ROM, World Wide Web) * Problems arising for presenters of work (e.g. museums, libraries, publishers) and solutions to these

problems * Issues arising from the international context (e.g. GATT, multilingual issues, the Internet) * Impact of access (and lack of access) to computers and other means of technology * Potential impacts on the scholarship and humanities of the future * The question of distributed authorship, real-time networked "multi-author" interactive production

and the general concept of authorship in electronic media.

Interested authors should submit abstracts (under 300 words) of proposed texts by electronic mail

(only) to <[email protected]>.

Selected authors will be invited to submit full manuscripts for publication consideration. Texts will be subject to peer review prior to acceptance for publication.

Accepted texts will be published either in full or summary abstract form in one or more of Leonardo, Leonardo Electronic Almanac or the Leonardo WWW Site.

Abstracts of articles already published elsewhere on these subjects may also be submitted for publica- tion on the Leonardo WWW site.

Previous articles published in Leonardo with similar themes include:
