BORDERLANDS is an instinctive, moving and nostalgic series of abstract works, reflect

ing on the emotion derived from the country side of the northern and southern borders of Ireland. Kate Arslanian Harvey, a native

Crossmaglen artist, was raised in the town land of Drummuckavall. She has been living between France and Ireland for just over 30

years, though her Irish roots are her true inspi ration for her continued success.

Photos courtesy of Katie Piper Photography.

Working with Turning Point from Scotland Cwilt Cymru from Wales, Loose Thread

Quilters have combined to make Spirit of the Celts. The theme was chosen to embrace myth, legend and any other aspect of cultural history which might inspire the individual artist.

The exhibition has been shown in

Birmingham, Scotland, and now in Northern Ireland. It will also travel to Wales. A unique opportunity to see the work of 26 artists from across these two islands demonstrate this craft: form within a modern idiom.

Open Monday to Saturday, 10am - 5.30pm & event nights.

€29). Seamas O Sfochain, Pauline

Garvey and Adam Drazin (eds). This

book introduces the reader to key collections of ethnographic objects held in museums in Ireland, including the NMI, the Ulster Museum, and the

Ulster Folk and Transport Museum. It

and exotic collections and reflects on

their changing significance during various phases, including the rapidly

changing island of our own day. ISBN 9781 905569 53 3

The fusion of Neo-Classical principles

(pb, €35). Edited by Linda Mulvin.

These essays make a wide-ranging and stimulating contribution to

current scholarly debates about the

nature of Neo-Classicism, that

critical cultural development that

signals the arrival both of

recognisable modernity and of

internationalism in the western

tradition. The essays have been

written by some of the leading

experts on the subject. ISBN 978 1 905569 55 7

WILLIAM BURTON CONYNGHAM \ ami

His lris\ Citcld of Antiqu&rian Artists

In the midst of a resurgence of pride in Ireland's history

during the 18th century, William Burton, later Conyngham, strove to emulate his British counterparts in producing albums of engravings illustrating the beauties of the

country's heritage. In its day, Burton Conyngham's was

regarded as the most significant collection of such drawings in Ireland. This beautiful volume reconstructs that

important and extensive collection, cataloguing more than

600 drawings and engravings.
