Dear Friends

“Global warming” is “climate change” and summer is cold and winter is hot and I am tired of pundits threatening the world with Armaged-don. I am writing this article on the morning of August 31st in a flan-

nel shirt with the furnace turned on and have my rifle loaded for a polar bear with a warm fur coat. I really don’t care about peo-ple sweltering down south; only mad dogs and Englishmen ever went out in

the noon-day sun, anyhow. Up here, Michigan has become a “cool” place to live. The cooler weather also came with a winter storage application from my boat yard. Obviously, autumn must be upon us. With this change of seasons, our DPS year is about three-quarters over and it has been challenging to me with a need to attend DPS activities and the need to stay reasonably close to my better half. We have a lot of ac-tivities on our calendar and we hope that you will take advantage of the meetings and events and grace us with your presence and smil-ing faces.

Commander Earl Wolfe

01 Oct General Dinner Meeting at Fishbones 1800 (6:00 pm) (Details on Page 10) 02-05 Oct Frostbite at Metro Beach (Details on Page 11) 3 Oct D9 Fall Council Meeting 23-25 Oct D9 Fall Conference, Sterling Heights Host: Mt. Clemens (See Insert) 29 Oct Executive Meeting at DYC 1900 (7:00 p.m.)

I can’t believe that we are already writing our articles for the October issue of the Dumping Grounds. Where has this year gone? Looking back, We had many spring classes open to you that should have provided the knowl-edge to now have successfully completed the summer boating season. This fall, we have three classes for members that are listed on the follow-ing page. Piloting has just started. It is the first step to being a totally profi-cient boater. Secondly is Cruise Planning. This course covers everything from weekend excursions to world traveling. Thirdly is CPR, for any of you who want to be certified or recertified. This is your chance to get ready for the “just in case”. By spring, you will be mentally prepared for the boating season, and can concentrate on getting your boat ready. At the Fall Conference in Sterling Heights the last weekend of October, all instructors who need to be recertified should come for the seminar on Satur-day morning. As soon as I have the time and room name, I will forward the information to all instructors. I am working on the Instructor Development course so we can get our instructors ready to jump in and help. Are you interested in any classes? You need to contact me to let me know what class you are interested in. I have anxious instructors who are generously supplying their knowledge, time and energy. Now we need YOU to help us out. Knowledge is the major key to Safety. The more you know, the more you are prepared. I remember this equation being told to me in my very first Seamanship class by a first rate instructor: Safe Boating = Knowledge + Preparedness + Experience If you are missing any part of the above equation, there could be trouble. Trouble isn’t what we need on the water, that’s for sure.

My contact information and class details are on page 4. P/C Diane Dawes, JN

DPS SUMMER RECAPS

The summer’s winding down and with our combined issue for August/September, I didn’t have the opportunity to display photos of some of the suc-cessful events we had this summer. It looks like everyone enjoyed them-selves. I believe you’ll have fun looking over the photos taken by LeRoy Strey, our dedicated photographer and you may find your photo included if you attended one of these events. But just because summer is on its way out, that doesn’t mean the fun is over. You couldn’t help miss the cover of this issue with the display of activi-ties scheduled this fall. This issue includes detailed information on these events, and we hope to see you soon (Joan Stoll, Editor).

CALDWELL SUMMER PICNIC (RECAP) 12 JULY 2009

Dave and Wendy’s party is one of my favorite events of the year. There’s so much going on and so much to see. Wendy is an avid gardener and if you like flowers, you’ll love her garden. (1) Dave has a miniature train set that includes a miniature village right next to the Koi Pond. (2) Our old time member, Dick Turner joined us at this event along with:

Delphine Cooley, Dorothy Atwood, Shirley Allen and one of Wendy’s friends, in the background. (3) Wendy, Cdr Earl, Vince Cooley and Maureen & Bill Smith. (4) Dave Cald-well with Patrick Allen & his guest. (5) If you like to swim, you’ve got it, they have a pool. Usually Dorothy is IN the pool, regardless of temperature. (6)

LeRoy Strey joined in the game of “ladder ball”. You can see the beautiful display of Wendy’s flower garden in the background.

MERIT MARK PARTY RECAP

AT ALLEN’S BOAT HOUSE, 18 JULY 2009

We thank Chuck and Shirley Allen for having us at their boat house property off Anchor Bay just at the entrance to the Salt River. It was a little chilly as you can see; some of us are wearing jackets. But the wind died down and it turned out to be a nice day. I always like to see those flags blowing in the wind. Such a beauti-ful site against the blue sky.

GENERAL DINNER PICNIC MEETING RECAP 06 AUGUST, 2009

A delightful, sunny and warm evening. We all brought our own selection of food to grill and a dish to pass. Some mighty scrump-tious recipes including appe-tizers and all kinds desserts and salads. Also some games headed up by Dara Brooks, including the balloon toss and ladder ball. Below, partners, Bernie Buhlinger and Jane Rocho.

After dinner we had a short meeting and sat around watching the boats coming and going. Mostly sailboats that evening.

And the winners of the balloon toss, Marlene and Tony Drewek’s son, T.J. and Ron Patrick

SAFETY FIRST Vs POLITICS Fighting The Push For Ethanol

A 33 foot Sea Ray exploded and caught fire in Tampa Bay, Florida and I suspect ethanol was to blame. The vessel was anchored with its generator running, kids were below watching TV and adults were on deck enjoying the day. Amazingly, no one was killed though sadly six were hospitalized. No offi-cial cause has been established yet however E10 ethanol is a suspect. E 10 is prevalent on Tampa's waterfront and the vessel was an older boat. Whether ethanol played a role or not, E10 is a potential problem for older boats and engines. And now the push is on for higher E15. As you know the price of crude oil and gas at the pump is rising. Some experts say that's due to increasing demand while others insist the falling dol-lar is to blame. But what really bothers me is that the escalating energy cost is playing into the hands of the ethanol producers, who are pursuing a waiver from the EPA to go from E10 to E15. Growth Energy, slick name for the lob-bing group representing the 54 ethanol manufacturers, is telling the EPA that E15 will "increase energy security." The only thing it will increase is the pro-ducers' revenues which, they admit, 8have dwindled from reduced demand. The EPA reportedly says it might approve the use of E15 in some engines but not of others creating another government-made nightmare. No matter how we look at this, E15 is not an option for boating. Tell the EPA to deny the peti-tion at capwiz.com/nmma.

TAKE PAUSE

By Dara Brooks

My grandmother used to say… “If you live long enough you will see that… The days will get shorter; the months and years will go by in a blink of an eye; and don’t take things for granted, just as they were given to you they can be taken away.” I was a student of the “old heads” as they were called. They were the ones who held the wisdom because they’d lived their own version of it or because so much had been passed down to them and ultimately through them. With countless seasons under our belt of grit, wisdom, and knowl-edge of the waterways and a genuine love of the water we at the Detroit Power Squadron and squadrons across the world need to take pause. It is because of the ones who came before us so long ago navigating by the stars and the seat of their pants and it is because of the ones who have walked amongst us that we have enjoyed GOD’s gifts, the land, air … and the water. It is because of the wisdom that has been passed down from the “old heads”, that we have aids to navigation on the waterways. It is because of the “old heads” that we have a formalized way of teaching safety on the waterways to others. It is because of the “old heads” that we enjoy this wonderful pastime called boating. Take pause, close your eyes and think of the ones who worked hard to man the events; bring in the members; put the tent up and break it down; do all the calling; the ones who you always counted on to bring up the rear as well as the ones you could count on to lead; the ones we laughed with and had that last beer with. Close your eyes and shed a little tear as you miss their laughter, their friendship and their inner light. Then open your eyes and allow the smile to take over your face as you feel the joy for hav-ing known them; for having been able to call them friend.
