Routing Engine
The Routing Engine runs Junos OS. The software processes that run on the Routing Enginemaintain the routing tables, manage the routing protocols used on the router, control the
router's interfaces, control some chassis components, and provide the interface for system
management and user access to the router.
The Routing Engine is installed into the midplane from the front of the chassis.
The Routing Engine is hotpluggable. !f you have only one Routing Engine, you can remove
and replace the Routing Engine without powering down the router, but the routing functionsof the system are interrupted when it is removed. !f the host system is redundant, the
bac"up Routing Engine is hotremovable and hotinsertable. # bac"up Routing Engine canbe removed without interrupting routing functions.

&!$s physically connect the router to networ" media. &!$s receive incoming pac"ets from

The #daptive Services /odule is an optional component of the $(E) and $(E)E. The

The router uses either #$ or 4$ power. 5ou can install one or two loadsharing power
supplies at the bottom rear of the chassis. The power supplies connect to the midplane, which distributes power to router components according to their individual voltage

Cooling 'yste# &er&ie$
The router cooling system consists of a fan tray, located along the left side of the chassisthat provides sidetoside cooling. !t connects directly to the router midplane. The fan tray
is a single unit containing four individually faulttolerant fans. !f a single fan fails, theremaining fans continue to function indefinitely. The fan tray is hotremovable and hot

Routing Engine
Software processes that run on the Routing Engine maintain the routing tables, manage the
routing protocols used on the router, control the router interfaces, control some chassiscomponents, and provide the interface for system management and user access to the
router.
5ou can install one or two Routing Engines in the router. The Routing Engines install into thefront of the chassis in horiKontal slots in the S$)s labeled 1 and 0. !f two Routing Engines
are installed, one functions as the master and the other acts as the bac"up. !f the master
Routing Engine fails or is removed, and the bac"up is configured appropriately, the bac"upta"es over as the master. The Routing Engines are hotpluggable.
