The Port Royal Marine Laboratory Celebrates 60 Years

I n No vember 2015 the Department of Life Sciences and friends celebrated the 60th Anniversary of the Port Royal Marine Laboratory (PRML). The PRML was founded in 1955 by Profes sors Ivan Goodbody and David Steven. The celebration of the 60th ann iver sa r y began wi th researchers, members of the

Department of Life Sciences, former alumni and well-wishers gathering for a commemorative church service at the UWI Chapel. Other activities included mangrove boat tours and tours of the PRML’s Biodiversity Centre for citizens of Port Royal and an alumni day trip to Lime Cay. The activities concluded with a Reunion of former researchers and staff on December 3 which allowed for reconnection, the sharing of memories and a look at how things have changed. Persons also got the opportunity to tour the Port Royal Mangroves and the special “mini-museum” featuring pictures, equipment used throughout the years, and publications from PRML. Those present also spoke of how their PRML experience impacted their lives and facilitated their environmental contributions across the globe including Jamaica, Trinidad & Tobago, Barbados, USA and Australia. Guests included Charlotte Goodbody, Euna Moore, Ronald Young, Frank Ross, Avril Siung Chang, Cesna McCain and Fred Hanley. The PRML thanks those all involved in the planning process and looks forward to the next 60 years!

Mathematics Career Fair

The Department of Mathematics held its 3rd Annual Career fair on November 20, 2015. Seventy-one finalising students spanning different majors in Mathematics were given the opportunity to interact with four private sector companies. Participating companies were Bank of Jamaica (BOJ), Guardian Life, Port Authority of Jamaica, and Victoria Mutual Building Society (VMBS ) . The companies represented entities which have in the past employed or currently employ Mathematics graduates. The event gave students a chance to receive feedback on their CVs, self-presentation and interview skills and provided companies with a change to vet students for recruitment in advance of their graduation.
