Fungi grow radially underground, and under the right conditions, they grow the fruiting body for reproduction.
What are fungi?
Fungi are all those eukaryotic organisms that are not plants, animals or protists. Some of them are multicellular. They show sexual and asexual reproduction. They are chemosynthetic. Some of them are parasites
The structure we know as mushrom is actually the reproductive part of the fungus that produce the spores.
After the reproductive season, the mushroms die
and the micelia spread increasing the size of the
fungus underground.
Because of their metabolism, fungi decompose organic matter as they secrete digestive enzymes on the substract they are growing in, and play an active role in food chains as decomposers of decaying organisms.
Some others are dangerous parasites that grow on living organisms causing disease, and even, death.
