10th Annual Conference!
The annual Forum was held on June 22nd in Houston. We had
a total of 30 attendees, including two non-members!
The morning started with a riveting presentation from the
Houston Police Department’s Senior Community Liaison, Ste-
phen Daniel, on what to do when the unthinkable happens.
He explained how to react during an active shooter crisis and
the importance of having a “survival mindset” in the event of
a mass shooting.
Mr. Daniel outlined three strategic choices of action to con-
sider when a shooting begins. Depending on the situation:
run if you can, hide if you can or fight if you must. He dis-
cussed each option to help determine when to best use it.
Ellen Parsons who attended said: The presentation
“Surviving an Active Shooter” presented by the Hou-
ston Police Department can be summed up by the
instructions to Run, Hide or Fight. I learned it only
takes a few seconds to check out your surroundings
to find an exit route, a place to hide, or things in the
room that could be used to protect yourself. By al-
ways being aware of these things you save precious
seconds in the event of an active shooter. You may
not have time to figure those things out when you
are facing the situation. The other thing to remem-
ber, is if you are exiting try to take as many with
you as possible, but if someone is hesitating encour-
age them to come, but do not let them slow you
down in getting away from the scene.
Next, we heard from Mark Elliott, author of Sitting Duck –
Why YOUR Business is a Cybercriminal’s Ideal Target, on
how to keep our data safe. Cont. on pg. 3

FWIT AT IBAT’S LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE
The Independent Bankers Association of Texas has been a valued supporter of FWIT over our ten year history. As part of
their Platinum Level sponsorship of our 2019 Annual Conference, IBAT provided FWIT the opportunity to sponsor their an-
nual Leadership Conference. In June, former FWIT President Tammy Gibbons represented FWIT at the Leadership Confer-
ence and spoke to the attending bankers about our association.

I would like to take this opportunity to personally invite each of you to join us at our upcoming conference this September
at the Courtyard by Marriott Austin Pflugerville Conference Center. If you’ve not attended conference in the past, you’re
missing an outstanding opportunity for both professional and personal growth. It is so rewarding to join our members from
across the state of Texas for a time of learning, networking and fellowship.
This year’s conference marks our 10th Anniversary Celebration and will highlight our theme “Expect to Win!” You’ll enjoy
top speakers, including decorated U.S. Army Blackhawk helicopter pilot Elizabeth McCormick, who will inspire us to Soar 2
Success. Also, Dr. Sherene McHenry, The People IQ Expert, will empower and equip us to increase engagement, productivi-
ty and purpose both in the workplace and in our lives.
There will also be key legislative updates and an industry panel of women leaders sharing their secrets to success. I know
you will appreciate the opportunity to continue to enhance your professional development and leadership skills while net-
working with like-minded women in finance. Please consider joining us in our quest to help high-performing leaders achieve
even more.
It would be a pleasure to see you in Pflugerville this September where we, as members of Financial Women in Texas, strive
to fulfill our mission of Helping Women Succeed! Should you have questions about conference or about Financial Women in
Texas, I would be more than happy to visit with you more.

Mr. Elliott discussed the common cyber-criminal attacks: 1)
phishing - in which the cyber-criminal typically attaches a
malicious attachment or link to an email targeting a broad
number of recipients and 2) whaling - which is a social engi-
neering attack that takes aim at, or uses the identity of, key
corporate leadership: CEOs, CFOs, executive level manage-
ment, etc.
Mr. Elliott explained that social engineering relies on the nat-
ural human instinct to believe something that appears to be
true. “Hackers patiently research their targets to find as
much personal information as possible to give the appear-
ance of legitimacy. Interestingly, they look to social media
sites such as Facebook and LinkedIn, which can contain a
reservoir of seemingly innocent information that can be
turned against the target.”
Mr. Elliot provided five ways to fight back:
Don’t believe everything you read.
Train employees and executives.
Beware of typosquatting (sending a link whose URL looks
official but is slightly off or has .net as opposed
to .com for example)
Review privacy settings on social media.
Employ a multi-layered validation/authorization system.
Ellen said: The presentation “The Cybersecurity Threat
Landscape” by Mark Elliott, CEO of 3i International was a
great presentation. Some things I took away from the
presentation: Financial organizations are big targets for
malware and companies should be prepared by spending
the necessary resources to protect their systems by do-
ing a threat assessment, creating a plan and implement-
ing it and doing ongoing maintenance as well as continu-
ing to train employees on recognizing phishing e-mail
and in protecting client information. It is also important
for companies to be aware of what procedures for pro-
tecting systems their vendors are using.
Using password protection like Last Pass or Kaspersky is a
good way to create and store passwords, and having a
21 character passphrase would be nearly impossible to
break.
I also learned about how criminals use the information they
glean from your personal or company records and sell
the information on the dark web. If a person wants to
check out the dark web they should be very careful not
to use their home or business network.
All attendees received a copy of
Mr. Elliot’s book and we have sev-
eral remaining copies. If you’d like
one, please contact Lori Victory – [email protected].

Below are a couple of pictures from the Big Country
groups July 18th meeting. Incoming President, Gayla
Fullerton, ran our meeting. Unfortunately, the speaker we
initially had lined up had a death in her family and was
unable to be there. We were fortunate to have Betty Hukill
fill in for us. Betty is very well known in our community
and a supporter of many things, but is probably known
best for her work with the theater and acting community
and her time with the local Paramount Theater. She en-
acted a couple of excerpts from a play “Love, Loss and
What I Wore” which was a local fundraiser for a medical
mission nonprofit. We had lunch
and a show which was a treat
and enjoyed by all.
