Dear Friends, This past year was yet another record breaking period for our clinic. Double digit (11%) increases in patient volumes across all of our departments stretched both our human and financial resources. However, we met the challenge thanks to our more than 250 dedicated volunteers who donated in excess of 30,000 hours. Faithful donors also stepped up their support to help us cover our operational expenses. And, community partners, like the local non-profit hospitals and community-based physician practices increased their in-kind donations of ancillary and inpatient services and procedures. At CVIM, the community comes together to heal itself, and by doing so, ensures the ongoing vitality of Chester County. We could not be more grateful for this generous outpouring. For more than a decade, CVIM has served as the medical home for thousands of adults and children who are simply looking for a way to regain or maintain their health so that they may continue to be productive members of our community. Building on our experience of caring for the uninsured, we have created a realistic model of care that fosters long- term positive health outcomes – one that can be replicated in other communities and other healthcare settings. But if not for the generosity of our volunteers and donors and the skills and expertise of our core staff, this work would not be possible. Thank you to all who have supported our mission. With grateful wishes for good health in the coming year. Dear Friends,

This past year was yet another record breaking period for our clinic.

Building on our experience of caring for the uninsured, we have created a realistic model of care that fosters long-term positive health outcomes – one that can be replicated in other communities and other healthcare settings. But if not for the generosity of our volunteers and donors and the skills and expertise of our core staff, this work would not be possible. Thank you to all who have supported our mission.

With grateful wishes for good health in the coming year.

Chester County, one of the wealthiest counties in the united states, has thousands of residents who are low income and do not have health insurance. They are hard working individuals providing essential services in a variety of sectors—hospitality, transportation, retail, entertainment, construction, agriculture and more. They work hard to make a better life for their families, but do not earn enough to purchase healthcare insurance, and they are not eligible for Medical Assistance, Medicare, VA Benefits, or Children’s Health Insurance Program.

A Community Need… (continued)lack of access to preventive or primary care takes its toll on the individual, the healthcare system, and the community as a whole…

• The uninsured use high-cost hospital emergency departments for routine care, taxing resources and increasing bad debt loss for hospitals.

• Patients who use emergency rooms for primary care often do not follow through with treatment. They receive prescriptions that they cannot afford, and are referred to physicians that they cannot access due to lack of insurance and disposable income.

• Without access to care, health problems are left unattended. diabetes, high blood pressure and other problems that could be controlled are untreated, creating unnecessary suffering and in many situations, life-threatening complications.

• untreated illnesses keep workers off the job, decrease productivity and create safety issues. unhealthy workers create public health problems that affect everyone.

…and a Community SolutionCommunity Volunteers in Medicine (CVIM) opened on May 18, 1998 to address this growing community health problem. CVIM is a community-based, not-for-profit organization which provides primary medical and dental care, prescription medications and comprehensive health education free of charge to low income, uninsured working adults and their children, as well those who are newly unemployed in Chester County.

• services include primary medical care, gynecology, podiatry, pediatric care, internal medicine, cardiology, orthopedics and more, plus comprehensive preventative and restorative dental care.

• A true community effort, services are provided by a team of more than 150 licensed healthcare professionals who volunteer their time, including physicians, nurses, nurse practitioners, dentists, dental hygienists, pharmacists and others.

• CVIM works with a virtual network of hundreds of physicians, hospitals and outpatient centers that provide specialty care in their respective locations.

• CVIM does not duplicate existing services and works hard to facilitate access to other community services, including food banks, shelters, counseling and more.

• CVIM provides clinical experience for over 100 students of various universities and schools studying nursing, medicine, dentistry, dental hygiene, pharmacy and social work.

even more incredible is the fact that CVIM is totally supported by philanthropy. CVIM is an example of how cost effectively and efficiently healthcare can be delivered in a volunteer, community-based model. It is reflection of a community that cares…

Over

250 volunteersdonated more than

30,000 hours to care for

CVIM patients this year!

A Community that Cares…CVIM exists only because of caring and generous people in the community who share their time, talent and resources to help their neighbors in need. CVIM patients are uninsured; services are not reimbursed by any third party, including state and federal government programs. The annual budget of $1.9 Million is totally funded by private philanthropy. Community support is realized in many ways…

• In 2011 CVIM logged more than 30,000 total volunteer hours with more than half donated by licensed healthcare professionals—physicians, nurses, dentists, hygienists and more.

• CVIM dispensed more than 17,000 prescription medicines and received nearly $1,500,000 in free drugs from local pharmaceutical companies.

• CVIM is a total community effort – 50% of our funds come from individuals, 13% from foundations, 19% from corporations, and the remainder from sources such as united Ways, churches and civic organizations.

• our local hospitals increased their level of support this past year, including free or discounted lab and radiology services. our patients also participate in paying for some of the more expensive and specialized services by voluntarily donating back what they can to support their care—in 2011 this totaled just under $50,000.

…and Transforms LivesIn Fiscal year 2011, the conservative estimate of the value of CVIM services offered to the community totaled more than $3,200,000. This figure does not include the value of resources saved, such as the cost of inappropriate use of hospital emergency departments or the cost of treatment of complex and life-threatening heath issues that could have been prevented or controlled with appropriate health care.

now in its thirteenth year of service, CVIM has become a vital and essential community resource:

• CVIM staff and volunteers manage 19,500 medical and dental patient visits annually. since August 2008, CVIM has been treating more than 100 new patients every month.

• CVIM has become the primary adult dental provider for the uninsured in Chester County and sees on average 2 to 3 dental emergencies a day in its six dental operatories.

• Annually, CVIM provides dental care for more than 400 uninsured children who suffer from badly diseased teeth. With relief from pain, these children can eat nutritiously and thrive in school. In addition, CVIM dental professionals provide screenings and fluoride treatments to an additional 500 children in community outreach sessions.

• CVIM treats patients from every zip code in Chester County and sees a multicultural population. Many volunteers and staff are bilingual.

• The lives of our patients suffering from chronic disease (diabetes, hypertension, asthma) have been significantly impacted by our model of care which includes patient and family education and counseling and ongoing support.

• In addition to the annual budget of almost $2 million, donations of drugs, lab tests, services, supplies and other in-kind items valued at over $3,131,743 enabled CVIM to give quality care to many more patients!

“No matter how down or ill I was, they always lifted me up. They listened. It was like being treated by good, no, really good friends who sincerely cared about me!”

now training to be a nurse
