Message from the GSCA President

Giant Tales Volume 17, Issue 7

Page 8

Hello everyone! The countdown to the National is on and the excitement is growing. There are still classes needing sponsors, so please consider dedicating a class for your favorite dog or a dog person. They are still looking for volunteers for all sorts of tasks. No experience necessary. It takes a lot of man (or woman) power to pull off a National. Many only experience the final product. We need younger members to learn what goes on so the Nationals will continue in the future.

AKC is very concerned about people’s behavior at shows and has recommend-ed calling a bench on anyone whose behavior would make a new-comer to a show not want to come back. Be mindful of what is going on around you. Remember if we run off those who may want to show dogs, there will be no shows in the future.

Canine influenza continues to be a hot topic. Protect your dogs. We cannot keep them in a glass bubble, but we can avoid putting them in situations that may cause unnecessary exposure: avoid dog parks, no shared water, assess your environment, if you hear a coughing dog stay away, good handwashing and sanitation of your equipment can’t hurt. There are 2 vaccines for canine influenza but if you plan on using them, it needs to be now. It takes about 2 weeks after the second vaccine to see the benefit of it.

Please have safe travel to the National. Have a plan if the air conditioning in your car goes out. This happened to me when I was moving to Arizona and is my biggest fear driving to Pennsylvania with my little dog. In a big van there are not any windows to really ventilate the rear, so each dog got a bag of ice. This kept them cool until we arrived. Now I have 3 green battery fans from Home Depot along with 3 back up batteries and 2 types of battery chargers. They actually can move a great deal of air.

I am looking forward to seeing you all in August!

Kim Please welcome Lori Clark back to the Board, serving as the Western Regional Director. Thank you, Lori, for taking on this role for the club.

Vet School Dropping Programs

The Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine is evidently closing their breeders services, a warning bell about the future of purebred dogs. It was pointed out that shelter medicine has taken over many facilities, and there's speculation that infectious disease curriculums could increase with the number of foreign rescue dogs arriving with all sorts of diseases to which American dogs have never been exposed. It was brought to the attention of BCKC president, Carole Wilson, that plans are in the works to close the Theriogenology section. Dean Neil Olson made the decision to eliminate the department by 2019. It's hoped that everyone steps up and writes or calls the following people to express concern over doing away with this department and establish a "paper trail" of concern and protest: Dean - Neil Olson College of Veterinary Medicine W203 Veterinary Medicine Bldg. 900 East Campus Dr. Columbia, MO 65211 [email protected] 573-882-3768 Interim Dean - Dr. Carolyn Henry A373 Clydesdale Hall [email protected] 573-882-7821 Department Chair - Dr. John Dodam A383 Clydesdale Hall [email protected] 573-884-6444 Hospital Director - Dr. David Wilson A366 Clydesdale Hall [email protected] 573-882-1700 Chancellor (Columbia campus) - Dr. Alexander N. AKC Obedience News and Updates

Giant Tales Volume 17, Issue 7

Page 10

July 5, 2017 The AKC convened a task force of five judges, exhibitors and trainers to explore changes that could maximize safety, while still testing the important aspect of the "stay" skill. Mindful of the concerns and suggestions sent to the AKC from all sectors of the sport, the Task Force members spent three days exploring and formulating changes.

In today's culture of diverse dog training methods and philosophies that variously impact the behavior of dogs coming to trials, the AKC recognizes exhibitor concerns for stronger safety measures to protect all dogs from interference of any kind in the ring during competition. At the same time, there is also a strong consensus in the sport that the impulse control and obedience demonstrated in group stays must be preserved.

The committee’s work resulted in the following recommendations:

The creation of new individual exercises for Novice and Open that will test a stay with distance between dog and handler.

That one group exercise be retained in Novice that will test both sit and down stays in the presence of other dogs, with spacing and leash use to ensure safety, and a formation option that will allow up to ten dogs in the ring.

That open out-of-sight stays be replaced by an individual exercise also testing sit and down skills, and a command discrimination exercise that will demonstrate steadiness and obedience at a distance with skills performed in place. For Open A dogs the exercise creates a stepping stone toward Utility. For the Open B dogs, a randomized order of skills is designed to challenge experienced teams at least as much as the group exercises do now.

The recommended changes will streamline scheduling for judges, reduce conflicts for exhibitors showing multiple dogs, and maintain a level of challenge appropriate to the class. With more confidence in their dogs’ safety in the ring, we hope that concerned owners will re-engage in AKC obedience and feel inspired to pursue their goals.

More details will be published when descriptions have been fine-tuned by AKC. It is anticipated this will occur around the beginning of September.
