This is Divine Mercy
Sunday
Pope John Paul heavily
endorsed the message of Divine Mercy to the
universal church. This backing included
changing Low Sunday
to Divine Mercy
Sunday. John Paul
sincerely believed that
the human family is
still in tremendous need
of healing and hope, of
both receiving mercy
and sharing compassion
with one another.

Westport Community Festival
Guardian Angels Parish * June 2, 2019 The Festival is Guardian Angels largest fundraiser
of the year. As in past years, the Festival will have
music, dancing, Mexican food, Bingo, Picnic
Food, Games, a raffle and a Silent Auction. We
need YOUR help. We are in need of items for
our Silent Auction. We ask you to donate or
solicit a gift (a good plan is to solicit a gift from a
restaurant or store where you do business). We
ask that this has a minimum value of $25.
Restaurant certificates, service gift cards, baseball
tickets, and wine baskets are sought after auction
items. If you solicit a gift, be sure and let us know
so we can send them a tax receipt. If you intend to
solicit a number of auction items, we can supply
you with tax receipts to give donors. We are in
need of game and bingo prizes also. Next week,
we will have raffle tickets in the back of church.
We are asking each household to purchase or sell
at least $20 in raffle tickets (20 tickets @ $1 each).
Lastly, we need people power! This week we have
volunteer sheets up in the back of church. We are
asking all parishioners to sign up for a minimum
two hour shift during the Festival on June 2nd.
We will have posters for the Festival available
next week. If you work somewhere with a bulletin
board, please take a poster to hang in your place of
employment to advertise the Festival. Lastly,
please help us spread the word about the Festival
to your friends and family. Come to the Festival
and spend the day!
Share in a Lyke Liturgy
St. Therese Little Flower Parish invites you to join them
on Saturday May 11, 2019, at 2:00 pm for their
“Lyke Liturgy.” Members of St. Therese Parish
annually attend the Archbishop Lyke Conference and
return refreshed with new music, ideas for various
liturgical ministries and congregation engagement. The
Lyke Conference is a gathering that celebrates the
legacy of Fr. Clarence Joseph Rivers, who pioneered
the integration of black sacred music into the Catholic
celebration of the Eucharist. The Second Vatican
Council, in the early 1960s, opened the door of the
Church to liturgies conducted in the language of the
local people and, through its broader emphasis on
inculturation, ushered in new possibilities for liturgical
music. Come and spend a little time with St. Therese
parishioners and add the gift of your presence to
their Lyke Liturgy that will feature some special guests.
A free will offering will be taken to benefit those
attending this year's Lyke Conference.
We invite you to be on Guardian
Angels team for OutPace
Poverty 2019! This annual 5K
walk and fun run will take place
on Saturday, June 8 at 8:00 am.
This year’s event takes place at Frank A. Theis Park,
located at the corner of Volker Boulevard and Oak
Street in Kansas City, Missouri (just east of the
Plaza). Go to https://app.mobilecause.com/vf/
outpace/KateRiha to register. Our Team is The
Angels.
Volunteers Needed
We need volunteers to help a parishioner at her home.
She needs individuals who would be willing to stay at
her house and keep an eye on her spouse (who has
dementia) while she attends mass and goes on other
important errands. We could use several people so we
can rotate. Please call Jo at 913 -850- 2288, if you can
help out. The couple lives in Westwood, Kansas.
This Sunday
Join with the Guardian Angels Green Team for a short
program to reflect on God’s Creation around Earth
Day. The program will take place in the Parish Hall
between the two Sunday masses (approx. 9:30 am) on
April 28 and is entitled “All Creation Gives God
Praise: Protecting Biodiversity in a Time of Climate
Crisis.”
Thoughts From Guardian Angels Reflection for weekend of
April 27/28 As this bulletin appears in the hands of our ushers and then into your hands, it seems almost impossible that we have completed the first week of Easter… yes, the first week because we, as the Catholic Church, celebrate 7 weeks in the Easter Season. Seven weeks of remembering what God, thru Jesus, and in the Spirit, gifted us with, in the life, death and resurrection of the Son. So, during these coming weeks, I encourage you to reflect a bit on what the Resurrection means to you, in your daily life. How does the life, death, resurrection, or what we call the Paschal Mystery, make a difference? At one point in my ministry of faith formation, I realized that for me, the Resurrection, which can mean different things to different people, was a call to live in the awareness that God’s Presence was active, always surrounded me, and called me to live in hope. Christ’s resurrection meant a
different type of Presence in the world,,, not a physical presence as we know it but an embrace of God, holding us, molding us, loving us into the persons we are meant to become. God is with us, just as surely as all that we see is with us. This constant presence speaks to me of how God invites me to hope, to allow God to lead when I don’t know where I’m heading. To let go of what I can’t control, and leave those situations and persons in God’s hands. Do I do this perfectly, all the time, without fail? Certainly not…it’s a lifelong process of learning how to follow the Master, as did his disciples, who weren’t perfect either. Today’s Gospel is the wonderful story of Thomas who demanded proof that Jesus has risen. He wanted to physically touch and see the wounds of Christ. We call him doubting Thomas but I guess he was just as human as we are. We doubt, we ask for signs, we question. And God understands our needs, our sometimes failing faith and will always respond to us so that our belief can become
stronger. Blessed are we who cannot see but believe. I see so many of our people here at GA whose faith is the key to their joy, hope and faithfulness. God sends people into our lives to help us believe, to model faith, to call us to believe again, and again. This is the Resurrection.. lived daily, lived imperfectly, but lived by each of us uniquely. Glory to God who sent the Son and bestowed the Spirit on us, the Church, so that we might believe!
Sr. Linda Barringer
“Before the many sufferings of our time, may the Lord of life not find us cold and indifferent. May he
make us builders of bridges, not walls. May the One
who gives us his peace end the roar of arms, both in
areas of conflict and in our cities, and inspire the
leaders of nations to work for an end to the arms race and the troubling spread of weaponry, especially in
the economically more advanced countries. May the
Risen Christ, who flung open the doors of the tomb,
open our hearts to the needs of the disadvantaged, the vulnerable, the poor, the unemployed, the
marginalized, and all those who knock at our door in
search of bread, refuge, and the recognition of their
dignity.”
