B5 flange (F)

A B5 flange is a simple mounting flange with a large diameter, through holes and a centre fit with which the drive can be securely attached to the application. As standard, the B5 flange has metric dimensions and is available for all NORD geared motors.

B14 flange (Z)

The NORD B14 flange has threaded holes and a centre seat installed in the geared motor’s housing. It is usually used to attach the geared motor to the application’s machine base or to attach various screw connection components such as B5 flange, torque arm or shaft cover. As standard, the B14 flange has metric dimensions and is a compact method to attach the geared motor.

Hollow shaft (A)

The standard hollow shafts with key are made from C45 or stainless steel (1.4057 or 1.4301). The following shaft diameters are available in the standard: 20H7, 25H7, 30H7, 35H7, 40H7, 1.000“, 1.125“, 1.1875“, 1.250“, 1.4375“, 1.500“

Shrink disc (S)

The shrink disc is based on the proven clamping principle and allows for a frictionally engaged torque transfer where the tightness of the screw plugs is converted into a radial pressure between the shaft and hub, achieving a shrinkage to the customers' shaft. Shrink discs result in a press-fit that is completely free of play and can transmit high torques compared to other assembly types.Shrink discs do not wear, even with frequent changes of load and rotational direction.

No fitting surface corrosion compared to key connections

Easy assembly and disassembly

Often larger bore diameters possible than with keyed hollow shafts

For a better and easier assembly, the use of shrink discs is particularly recommended for gear units in hollow shaft versions. The length of the customer’s shaft journal that is inserted into the gear unit’s hollow shaft must match the length of the hollow shaft (mH).

The shaft diameter of the shaft journal can be designed according to ISO h6 or f6. (f6 = easy assembly). The material of the customer’s shaft journal must have a yield point of at least Re = 360 N/ mm2 so that the compression for generating the frictional grip can be built up and no permanent deformation occurs.

GRIPMAXX™ (M)

The NORD GRIPMAXX™ bushing system combines the conventional shrink disc version with a wide range of clamping bushing inserts that match different end bore diameters.

Compared to customary shrink discs, the NORD shrink disc is more powerful and provides higher clamping forces. By tightening the shrink disc screw plugs, high radial forces act on the walls of the NORD hollow shaft.

The NORD  hollow shaft is specifically designed for permanent elasticity and generates extraordinarily high compressive forces. These high forces are transmitted via the clamping bushing and generate the required clamping forces on the machine’s solid drive shaft.

GRIPMAXX™ allows for press-fits that are completely free of play with the machine’s drive shaft, minimising the risk of fretting corrosion.

GRIPMAXX™ allows for the simple removal and installation of the gear unit by generously dimensioned assembly and disassembly plays.

Reinforced output shaft bearings (VL)

The use of reinforced output shaft bearings with an increased bearing capacity allows for the handling of higher external loads (radial/axial). In case of primarily high axial bearing loads, please contact us.

Torque arm (D)

A torque arm is a compact and simple solution to secure a geared motor with a hollow shaft. It is screwed on the B14 flange of the geared motor. The torque arm has a rubber bush at the fastening hole that absorbs occurring shock loads.

Cover cap (H)

An optional cover for the rotating hollow shaft is available. It also protects the output shaft against dust and dirt particles.

IP66 hollow shaft cover (H66)

NORD offers hollow shaft covers in protection class IP66 (protection against dust and spray water). The rotating hollow shaft is fully sealed against moisture and foreign bodies.

Double radial shaft seal (2WD)

The double output radial shaft sealing provides increased reliability. It consists of two radial shaft seals. Substances which affect the seal from the outside must overcome additional barriers before they reach the inner sealing lip that seals the oil space and can cause leakage.

In case of external damage, the second radial shaft seal provides additional protection against leaks. The double shaft sealing has an inner radial shaft seal (form A without protective lip) and an outer radial shaft seal (form AS with protective lip).

Output radial shaft seals (FKM)

As an option, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS can supply output radial shaft seals made from fluor-rubber elastomer (FKM) for almost all types of gear units. FKM is also known under the trade name Viton.

FKM fulfils higher requirements for resistance to heat and chemicals. The operating temperature range of FKM is from -25 to 150 °C.

For temperatures in the area of the seal in excess of 85 °C for mineral oil lubrication and 80 °C for synthetic lubricants, NORD  DRIVESYSTEMS recommends the optional radial shaft seals made of the usually brown FKM material in place of the standard NBR radial shaft seals.

For applications in which the radial shaft seal comes into contact with chemicals from the outside, e.g. when cleaning the plant, the compatibility with the radial shaft seal material must be checked, both for NBR and for FKM.

Thermal motor protection (TF)

A sensible motor selection protects the motor against overheating caused by the application or the ambient conditions. Factors that could lead to overheating of the motor are, for example

Overload High ambient temperatures Restricted supply of cooling air Low motor speed due to inverter operation

DuoDrive has a thermal motor protection. It is used to directly monitor the winding temperatures with full utilisation of the motor power.

Three TF temperature sensors (one for each strand) connected in series are located at the hottest points of the windings. They are connected to 2 terminals in the terminal box.

When the rated trigger temperature (NAT) is reached, the resistance of the temperature sensor suddenly increases to almost 10x its normal value.

Trigger temperature: 135° C voltage max. 30 V terminals TP1 + TP2

The PTC resistor temperature sensor only performs its protective function when connected to a triggering device! A triggering device evaluates the resistance increase and switches the drive off.

Protection classes

As standard, DuoDrive fulfils protection class IP55.

DuoDrive can optionally be supplied in protection class IP66. Protection class IP66 is suitable for wet, high-pressure washed and dusty environments.

DuoDrive is available in the version with gear unit cover in hygiene-friendly design and nsd  tupH, optionally in protection class IP69K.

Incremental encoder (IG)

Modern drive applications often require speed feedback. Normally incremental encoders, which convert rotary movement into electrical signals, are used for this.

These signals are read out and processed by frequency inverters or other control devices. The incremental encoder of the IE5+ motor works according to a magnetic principle. The rotary encoder consists of two components: the magnet wheel mounted on the motor shaft, and the sensor circuit board.

The integrated electronics converts the measuring signals into a digitalised rectangular signal according to TTL or HTL logic.

The following requirements can be implemented in combination with NORD frequency inverters:

Speed control with large adjustment range Highly accurate speeds, independent of the load Synchronisation control Position control Standstill torques High overload reserves

The selection of a standard motor-brake combination according to the overview above must be verified by careful planning! It is essential that the braking torque is specified according to the requirements of the application.

Among other things, the drive design is oriented to both the torque requirement of the application and the motor torque. If necessary, the braking torque must be reduced considerably so that the gear unit is not overloaded when large moving masses are braked.

Brakes (BRE)

DuoDrive optionally offers an integrated holding brake with an emergency stop function.

Application-related examples for holding brake

A frequency inverter controls the acceleration and deceleration of the application. The mechanical spring-loaded brake is only applied after the application has come to a standstill.

The brake is therefore only used for “holding” the application (parking position). It does not perform any friction work and thus no conditioning of friction surfaces. Friction work is only transmitted in case of emergency stops or power cuts.

Brake connection voltages

Brakes are available with the following coil voltages:

Brake control

An inverter with appropriate rectifier is required to control the brakes. A rectifier integrated in the motor terminal box is not available for the DuoDrive. As an alternative, a rectifier in the control cabinet can be used. NORD offers a rectifier: the SK EBGR-1.

For more technical information about the rectifier, please refer to the NORD website.
