The Region 4 Service Center serves a seven-county area composed of 50 public school districts and 41 open-enrollment charter schools, representing more than 1.1 million students, 91,000 educators and 1,500 campuses. Since taking the leadership role in June 2011, Dr. Williams has held very high expectations for Galena Park ISD and created a culture of excellence. She is well-known for her “Excellence in all, for all, by all” leadership mentality. This expectation extends to all areas, including academics, athletics, fine arts and especially her platform of creating opportunities for students. “Dr. Angi Williams, a passionate leader dedicated to ‘Leading, Learning, Serving’, has impacted the lives of thousands of students as a counselor, principal, assistant superintendent and superintendent in Galena Park ISD,” Region 4 ESC Executive Director Dr. Pam Wells said. “Dr. Williams will be a tremendous representative of the superintendents in Region 4. We congratulate Dr. Angi Williams for this well-deserved award and wish her well as she joins the prestigious educators who have been nominated for state Superintendent of the Year.” The Regional Superintendent of the Year award is sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), and honors public school district superintendents. Galena Park High School is one of eight Houston area high schools who partner with the Houston Symphony through a program that provides assistance to schools that have at least a 40 percent low-income student population. The program affords high school students assistance and instruction by professional musicians from the Symphony. Over the last year, Salvador developed a special connection with Community Embedded Musician (CEM) and double bassist David Connor. They met when Mr. Connor taught a master class on audition preparation for the GPHS band. A Letter From the GPISD Superintendent of Schools
Dear GPISD Parents and Guardians,
As we look ahead to the 2016-17 school year, I want to first take a moment to express my sincere appreciation for the outstanding community support exhibited for our students and those charged with impacting their lives and the quality of life in Galena Park ISD through our recently passed bond referendum. I am grateful beyond measure. This successful initiative will serve to ensure a bright future
for our district in general and our students and teachers in particular.
Galena Park ISD has always made good use of the resources provided by our taxpayers. At present, over 70 percent of GPISD buildings are between 24 and 77 years old. This statistic speaks to the care the District has exhibited for all GPISD facilities. However, population growth and facility age eventually had to be addressed, and a plan was developed to discuss district facility needs and options.
There were many important players in this effort. In the planning stage, a diverse committee of citizens was presented with facts on facility age, student population growth and estimated costs. This group then helped determine priorities and made recommendations to the Galena Park ISD Board of Trustees, who evaluated these recommendations, made needed changes and unanimously approved calling for the election. Lastly, the community overwhelmingly approved this historic referendum. Passage of the bond ensures GPISD will continue to provide the best education possible to our students through top-rate facilities.
As our student’s return, we are reminded how important it is in GPISD to give them all the tools to succeed in life. We seek not only to lead, but to teach leadership. We do not simply impart knowledge to our students; we learn much from them. We encourage our students to serve their community and to appreciate those who serve them. We believe one of the best gifts a young person could ever receive is an appreciation for the many blessings life affords them. Thanks again for the large role you play in our mission of Leading, Learning and Serving… With Passion!

During the summer, Salvador attended a summer program at the prestigious Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan on a merit scholarship, only offered to the top two players of each instrument. He plans to pursue a degree in music performance at Northwestern University in Illinois.
GPISD has a rich tradition in arts education and boasts many accomplished former students who have gone on to successful careers after graduating high school. Salvador Flores is well on his way to adding his name to this prestigious group. We congratulate him on his success to date and wish him well in the future.
LyondellbasellGalena Park ISD Partnership
G a l e n a P a r k Independent School District donated an award winning fire pit to Lyondellbasell in appreciation of the strong partnership commitment they have made to the Career & Technical Education (CTE) program. The fire pit was created by
Advanced Welding students under the direction of Mr. Damon Starr. This specialty project earned multiple blue ribbons at the 2016 State SkillsUSA Competition in Corpus Christi, Texas. Lyondellbasell was honored to accept the donation and plans to raffle the fire pit off to benefit their United Way campaign.

Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education.” True education is what students in Galena Park ISD receive.
Each month a character trait is presented to the students of GPISD. The school faculty exemplifies the monthly trait while teachers integrate character education into lessons as often as possible. MARCHING BAND FESTIVALSGalena Park ISD will host three marching competitions during the month of October. The 14th annual GPISD Marching Band Festival will be held on Saturday, October 8 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The University Interscholastic League’s (UIL) Region 33 Marching Contest will be held on Saturday, October 22 from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The UIL Area F Marching Contest will be held on Saturday, October 29 beginning at 9:00 a.m.
All events will be held at the GPISD Athletic Stadium.Admission price for each event is $5 per person.

Who can receive free meals? Children who live in a household in which the income is within the Federal Income Guidelines are eligible for free meals. Additionally, if one member of the household is currently receiving assistance (benefits) from SNAP/Food Stamps, TANF, or FDPIR, all children in the household are eligible for free meals.
Do I need to fill out an application for each child? No. One application covers all children in a household; however, you must reapply each year.
My child’s application was approved last year. Do I need to fill out another one? Yes. Your child’s previous application is only valid for that school year and for the first few days of this school year. You must submit a new application unless the Student Nutrition Services Dept. has indicated to you that your child is eligible for the new school year.
May I apply if someone in my household is not a U.S. citizen? You or your child do not have to be a U.S. citizen to qualify for your child to receive free or reduced-price meals.
What are the prices for breakfast and lunch? Breakfast is free to all students. Elementary lunch is $1.45 and secondary lunch is $1.65. Reduced-price lunch is $0.25. Is there a difference in the way a regular price, reduced-price, or free meal is purchased? There is no difference. All students pay for the meal the same way, by typing in their student meal account number.
How do I register? You can register confidentially online at https://mealapps.galenaparkisd.com, or in person at the Galena Park ISD Administration Building located at 14705 Woodforest Blvd., Houston, TX 77015, or at your child’s campus. Note: It takes approximately 10 days to process an application. Students must pay for their meals until the application has been approved. Applying early is the best way to ensure free or reduced-price meals on the first day of school.

What are the benefits of the GPISD Senior Gold Card? The GPISD Senior Gold Card provides members with free admission to all GPISD performing arts and athletic events (excluding play-offs and away games). Members also receive subscriptions to GPISD’s fine arts and athletics newsletters, access to informative e-mail blasts and all athletics and fine arts calendars. Other benefits include a discount in the Lone Star Grill at the GPISD Administration Building. Card members receive the employee discount on lunch Monday – Thursday.
Who is eligible to receive a GPISD Senior Gold Card?The GPISD Senior Gold Card Program is available to all GPISD residents 55 years of age or older.
How much does the GPISD Senior Gold Card cost? CLASS OF 2016 GRADUATES
Galena Park ISD’s North Shore Senior High School Class of 2016 boasted 1,068 graduates, who at current tally, earned more than $6,000,000 in scholarships. Dr. Joe Coleman, principal of North Shore Senior High School, noted just a small sample of the many accomplishments of the graduating class, including prestigious honors and championships in areas such as academics, athletics and fine arts in his farewell remarks to the graduating seniors, their parents and commencement guests. GPISD is proud of the achievements of the Class of 2016 and looks forward to seeing what the future holds for this well-rounded and talented group of students.
Galena Park ISD’s Galena Park High School Class of 2016 is excited to announce 446 students received their high school diplomas during the commencement ceremony on Sunday, June 5, 2016, at NRG Stadium. The proud seniors accumulated a total of almost $2.4 million in scholarships, but rewards continue to increase daily as students receive good news of additional scholarships to assist in launching their college/university studies. Una carta de parte de la Superintendente de Escuelas de GPISDEstimados Padres de familia y Tutores de GPISD:
Mirando hacia el año escolar 2016-17 por venir, primero que nada quiero tomar un momento para expresar mi sincero agradecimiento por el excelente apoyo de la comunidad mostrado a nuestros estudiantes y aquellos encargados de impactar sus vidas y la calidad de vida en Galena Park ISD aprobando el bono a través de nuestra reciente elección. Mi agradecimiento es inmenso. Esta exitosa iniciativa servirá para garantizar un futuro brillante para nuestro distrito en general y particularmente para
nuestros estudiantes y maestros.
Galena Park ISD siempre ha hecho un buen uso de los recursos provistos por nuestros contribuyentes. Hasta la fecha, más del 70 por ciento de los edificios de GPISD tienen una antigüedad de entre 24 y 77 años. Esta estadística habla del cuidado que el Distrito ha mostrado para todas las instalaciones de GPISD. Sin embargo, el crecimiento de la población y la antigüedad de las instalaciones con el tiempo han tenido que ser enfrentadas, y un plan fue desarrollado para discutir las necesidades y opciones de las instalaciones del distrito.
Hubo muchas piezas claves involucradas en este esfuerzo. En la etapa de planeación, un comité diverso de ciudadanos fue presentado con los datos de la antigüedad de las instalaciones, el crecimiento de la población estudiantil y la estimación de costos. Después, este grupo ayudó a determinar las prioridades e hizo recomendaciones a los miembros de la Mesa Directiva de Galena Park ISD, quienes a su vez evaluaron dichas recomendaciones, hicieron los cambios necesarios y de manera unánime aprobaron abrir una elección. Por último, la comunidad aprobó de manera abrumadora esta histórica elección. La aprobación del bono garantiza que GPISD continuará proporcionando la mejor educación posible a nuestros estudiantes a través de instalaciones de primera categoría.
El regreso de nuestros estudiantes nos recuerda lo importante que es para GPISD brindarles todas las herramientas para sobresalir en la vida. Buscamos no solo guiar, sino enseñar liderazgo. No impartimos simplemente conocimiento a nuestros estudiantes; aprendemos mucho de ellos. Animamos a nuestros estudiantes a servir a su comunidad y a apreciar a aquellos que les han servido. La sociedad de Lyondellbaselly Galena Park ISD
El Distr ito Escolar Independiente de Galena Park donó a Lyondel lbase l l la chimenea de acero ganadora de un premio en agradecimiento por el sólido compromiso de sociedad que ha hecho con el programa de Educación Profesional y Técnica (CTE, por sus siglas en inglés). La
chimenea fue creada por los estudiantes de Soldadura Avanzada bajo la dirección del Sr. Damon Starr. Este proyecto especializado obtuvo múltiples listones azules en la Competencia Estatal SkillsUSA 2016 llevada a cabo en Corpus Christi, Texas. Fue un honor para Lyondellbasell aceptar la donación y planea organizar la rifa de la chimenea en beneficio de su campaña United Way.
continuación de la página 9Acordes PerfectosDurante el verano, Salvador asistió a un programa de verano en el prestigioso Centro para las Artes Interlochen en Michigan con una beca de excelencia, ofrecida solamente a los primeros dos músicos en cada instrumento. Él planea obtener un título en interpretación musical en la Universidad Northwestern en Illinois.
GPISD tiene una rica tradición en educación de las artes y se jacta de tener muchos exalumnos talentosos que han tenido exitosas carreras después de graduarse de preparatoria. Aunque es importante que los estudiantes reciban una buena educación académica, es igualmente esencial que la formación del carácter también sea abordada. Martin Luther King, Jr. dijo, “La función de la educación es enseñar a pensar intensamente y a pensar críticamente. Inteligencia más carácter, ese es el objetivo de la verdadera educación”. Lo que reciben los estudiantes en Galena Park ISD es una verdadera educación.
Cada mes se presenta a los estudiantes de GPISD una cualidad del carácter. El personal de la escuela ejemplifica la cualidad del mes al mismo tiempo que los maestros la integran a las lecciones tan a menudo como sea posible. Los estudiantes se enfocan en la cualidad del mes en sus escuelas y ojalá que también en la vida familiar. Festivales de Banda de MarchaGalena Park ISD será el anfitrión de tres competencias de banda de marcha durante el mes de octubre. El 14º Festival Anual de Banda de Marcha de GPISD se llevará a cabo el sábado, 8 de octubre de 9 a.m. a 6 p.m. La Competencia de la Banda de Marcha Región 33 de la Liga Interescolar Universitaria (UIL, por sus siglas en inglés) se llevará a cabo el sábado, 22 de octubre de 9:30 a.m. a 3:30 p.m. La Competencia de Banda de Marcha UIL Área F se celebrará el sábado, 29 de octubre a partir de las 9:00 a.m. Todos los eventos se llevarán a cabo en el Estadio Deportivo GPISD.El costo de entrada a cada evento es $5 por persona.
¿Quién puede recibir comidas gratuitas? Los niños que viven en una familia en la cual el ingreso está dentro de los Lineamientos del Ingreso Federal son elegibles para las comidas gratuitas. Además, si un miembro de la familia actualmente está recibiendo asistencia (beneficios) de SNAP/Food Stamps, TANF o FDPIR, todos los niños de la familia son elegibles para recibir comidas gratuitas.
¿Tengo que llenar una solicitud por cada hijo? No. Una solicitud cubre a todos los niños de la familia; sin embargo, cada año tiene que volver a solicitar los beneficios.
La solicitud de mi hijo fue aprobada el año pasado. ¿Tengo que llenar otra? Sí. La solicitud anterior de su hijo es válida solamente para ese año escolar y para los primeros días de este año escolar. Usted debe enviar una nueva solicitud a menos que el Depto. de Servicios de Nutrición del Estudiante le haya indicado que su hijo es elegible para el nuevo año escolar.
¿Puedo solicitar los beneficios si alguien en mi familia no es un ciudadano de los Estados Unidos?Sí. Usted o su hijo no tienen que ser ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos para que su hijo califique para recibir comidas gratuitas o de precio reducido.
¿Cuáles son los precios de los desayunos y los almuerzos? El desayuno es gratuito para todos los estudiantes. El costo del almuerzo en la primaria es $1.45 y para la secundaria y la preparatoria es $1.65. El precio reducido para el almuerzo es $0.25. ¿Existe una diferencia en la forma en la que se compra una comida a precio regular, reducido o gratuito? No hay ninguna diferencia. Todos los estudiantes pagan por la comida de la misma manera, solo marcan el número de su cuenta de comida.

Nota: Se toma aproximadamente 10 días para procesar una solicitud. Los estudiantes deben pagar por sus comidas hasta que la solicitud haya sido aprobada. Enviar la solicitud con anticipación es la mejor manera de garantizar las comidas gratuitas o de precio reducido el primer día de clases.

GENERACIÓN 2016
Galena Park ISD se enorgullece de 1,068 estudiantes de la Generación 2016 de la Preparatoria North Shore Senior, quienes hasta el momento han recibido becas escolares que suman más de $6,000,000. El Dr. Joe Coleman, director de la Preparatoria North Shore Senior, nombró solo un pequeño ejemplo de los muchos logros de la generación de graduados, incluyendo prestigiosos honores y campeonatos en áreas como la académica, deportiva y las bellas artes en su discurso de despedida a los graduandos, a sus padres e invitados a la ceremonia. GPISD está orgulloso de los logros de la Generación 2016 y espera ver lo que el futuro tiene para este completo y talentoso grupo de estudiantes.
Galena Park ISD se complace en anunciar que 446 estudiantes de la Generación 2016 de la Preparatoria Galena Park recibieron sus diplomas de preparatoria durante la ceremonia de graduación el domingo, 5 de junio de 2016, en el Estadio NRG. Los orgullosos estudiantes de 12º grado acumularon un total de casi $2.4 millones en becas escolares, pero las recompensas continúan aumentando diariamente a medida que los estudiantes reciben buenas noticias de becas adicionales para ayudarlos a emprender sus estudios en los colegios o universidades. ¡Galena Park ISD felicita a la Generación 2016 de la Preparatoria Galena Park en tanto se preparan para establecer sus sueños para el futuro en que está en marcha!
