Galeri, together with the European Union Chamber Orchestra, commissioned the composer Pwyll ap Sion and the chaired poet Twm Morys to compose a cantata in Welsh and in Cornish. Sevi/Syfi is a love-story between a young woman and a young man, but also between two countries, drawing on a myth, common in Cornwall and in Wales, about the land that disappeared under the sea: Lethesow in Cornwall and Cantre’r Gwaelod in Wales. The old Cornish lady in the songs reminisces, with the present events taking place through the medium of the Welsh language. The songs reminds us that this is an eternal story, and that it is possible to reclaim the lost land.
This unique cycle of songs, Sevi/Syfi will be performed by Swansea born soprano (and Celtic languages Cambridge Scholar) Elin Manahan Thomas together with the European Union Chamber Orchestra. Elin will also join the Orchestra for a joyful programme of popular classics including Grieg, Elgar, Mozart and Haydn.
This work was commissioned by Galeri in parternship with the European Union Chamber Orchestra. This was made possible with funding through Beyond Borders from the PRS for Music Foundation, Creative Scotland, Arts Council Northern Ireland, Arts Council Wales and Colwinston Trust.
Sevi/Syfi will also be performed at ‘The Hall for Cornwall’ in Truro, January 31.

Alongside Yates’ mellow and breathy horn, the trio features the flowing nylon-string acoustic guitar of Zsolt Bende, who interprets jazz harmonies with classical fingerpicking techniques, while weaving in subtleties from his hungarian and romanian roots.

dyled eileenThursday, 14.03.13 // 19.30
'Dyled eileen' portrays eileen and Trefor Beasley’s protest against their local authority in the 1950s to have their tax bill in Welsh. During their eight year struggle, they refused to pay their debt to the then ‘rural District Council of Llanelli’, and as a result, watched the bailiffs carry away nearly all their possessions bit by bit.
Angharad Tomos’ heartfelt script brings to life this passionate, yet humble and very personal story – that served as a revolutionary example in Saunders Lewis’ famous radio lecture of 1962, ‘The Fate of the Language’ – and takes us on a journey to remember the sacrifice that this young couple made in their fight for fairness for the Welsh language.

PERFORMANCE AT Y FELINHELI MEMORIAL HALL “An entertaining, but memorably cruel portrayal” (eifion Glyn) of a sailor’s life in the 19th Century, focusing primarily on the Davies’ family of shipbuilders from Anglesey. The company was responsible for transporting hundreds of people, coal and goods from Liverpool and London to the four corners of the earth – and then returning with cargo of all sorts – more particularly guano from the remote islands of South-West America. But there was another side to the coin.... Life was cheap and on tempestuous seas many lives were lost.

Stephen VenABleS: the eVereSt StoryFriday, 26.04.13 // 19.30
everest mountaineer Stephen Venables marks the 60th anniversary of the first ascent of the world’s highest mountain with a new talk celebrating the history of this iconic mountain.
In 1988 Venables wrote his own extraordinary chapter in the everest story. With a team of just four climbers, he pioneered a new route up the gigantic east Face, reaching the summit alone, without supplementary oxygen - the first Briton to do so. Caught out by darkness on the descent, he survived a record night alone in the open, without a tent or a sleeping bag, at 28,000 feet.
25 years on, Venables weaves his account of that epic expedition into the bigger everest story.
