Background and Context

Galway has been chosen as European Capital of Culture 2020.

Having come through the competition process successfully, the partners in the bid are building the Company to lead and deliver Galway 2020 European Capital of Culture.

They now wish to appoint a Communications Director to join The Chief Executive and Creative Director.

Role Overview – Communications Director

The role of Communications Director for Galway 2020 represents a unique opportunity to help ensure that Galway makes waves across the globe as European Capital of Culture in 2020 and beyond through innovative, creative and inspiring communications.

As Communication Director for Galway 2020 you will work as a key member of the Senior Management Team to deliver a global standard programme and impact.

Working closely with the CEO you will develop a Communication and Marketing strategy with local, national and international reach.

You will be able to evidence a strong track record of delivery and operational excellence and have the ability to deal with complex and demanding media environment.

The role will involve leading all proactive and reactive communications and marketing approaches ensuring that the wider team is engaged and motivated to fulfil the ambitions of the 2020 company and the European Capital of Culture title.

Job Description – Communications Director

Principal Accountabilities

To be the principal communications adviser to the Chief Executive, senior colleagues and the Board, contributing professional marketing and communications expertise to an effective, high performing organisation delivering value for money in the way it conducts its business.

To design and lead a large scale marketing programme for Galway 2020, with a particular focus on European and International markets.

To lead on all marketing and communications aspects of the preparation and review of the organisation’s business plans in accordance with the organisation’s role as set out in its strategic objectives.

To develop and deliver marketing plans to communicate all Galway 2020 branded elements of the cultural programme in consultation with the Chief Executive and the Creative Director.

To effectively sell & market Galway 2020 across all media platforms. Media management, liaising with print, TV, radio and online media.

To provide clear, timely and accurate marketing and communications advice to the Board to enable confident and accurate consideration of the organisation’s business in a way that gives confidence to, and maintains the trust of, investors and stakeholders about the organisation’s effectiveness.

To develop productive and open relationships with the Company's sponsor and partner organisations in relevant fields of activity.

To develop productive and open relationships with all of the Company's stakeholders. To promote collaborative relations and partnerships between public and private sector interests with the local community, businesses and civic leaders, the media, Government Departments and their agencies.

Lead on the development of a Tourism/Visitor Strategy for Galway 2020 in collaboration with the relevant agencies and stakeholder groups.

To work with the CEO to develop a strong internal communications strategy.

Any other duties as reasonably required by the Chief Executive.

The Communications Director will be accountable to the Chief Executive and the Board.

Person Specification – Co mmunications Director

Essential Experience and Skills:

Experience of successful, senior responsibility for effective marketing and communications management in a complex and challenging media organisation with a proven reputation for strong marketing and communications.

Experience of applying professional marketing and communications expertise to the successful development and delivery of business strategy in a high-performing organisation.

A professional marketing or communications qualification.

Experience of providing clear, timely and accurate marketing and communications advice to a Board.

Experience of delivering effective stakeholder engagement/communications programmes

Demonstrable media management experience as referred to above, particularly digital media.

Experience of development of productive and open relationships with organisational stakeholders at multiple levels based on engaging and effective communication.

Experience of identifying new business opportunities and growing business or a brand, including potential for commercial sponsorship or public/private partnerships or increased public sector funding.

Significant experience in Digital/Online Communications is essential. Experience of effective working at a senior level in a team in the areas of people management and managing a substantial budget.

At least five years’ experience in a similar position.

Desirable experience:

Working in a similar role in an organisation delivering large scale cultural and creative outcomes.

Experience of working within the Tourism sector.
