JESSICA LoRRAINE: BUSINESS STUDIESGTI Business Studies FETAC Level 5 course, has given me a deeper outlook and understanding of all the concepts involved in business. GTI is simply an amazing place in which to study. I believe that the education and guidance I have received from the teachers in GTI has prepared me for the demanding requirements of higher Business degree. Finally GTI has provided me with a solid foundation for my future plans. On completing this programme I decided to continue to study business and applied to the Bachelor of Arts in Business Studies in GMIT. I would strongly recommend GTI as a place to go for further education.

CARoLINE RYAN: BUSINESS MANAGEMENTI had been working full time in retail for six years and I didn’t know if I would benefit from the course but within the first month I knew I had made the right decision. The coursework was challenging but the teachers all did a great job of explaining what was expected of us in our assignments. The strong emphasis on computer-based work was fantastic and although the course does involve a lot of assignments, I feel that this has adequately prepared me for my current course in GMIT.

I would recommend the Business Management course to anyone who has an interest in business but isn’t sure they want to commit to a full degree course.

STUDENT TESTIMoNIALS

PIoTYR WASIL: SECURITY STUDIESI’m really enjoying the course. I intend to join the Defense Forces and this course is an ideal preparation for that. There is a really good balance between classroom and practical lessons. For two of our subjects, we’ve gone on hiking trips to the Burren and Connemara to learn about outdoor leadership, safety and team working. I’d strongly recommend the course to anyone interested in the Defence Forces, Gardai, or the Security Industry.

STUDENT TESTIMoNIALADEEL GILANI: SoFTWARE DEVELoPMENT

Studying at GTI presented me with a unique opportunity to experience and learn from an excellent team of lecturers. Lectures came to life through well planned presentations. The content was interesting, challenging what I already knew and motivating me to learn more. I was inspired by the possibilities of advancing to further learning and through the support and encouragement from the course team, I pursued a course in Software Development in GMIT. I have really come into my own here and am currently entered into a competition in which I am confident I will do well. This stemmed from the course content both theory and practice in GTI including Networks, Programming / Object Oriented Programming and Database. I feel this was the foundation on which I have built my current study and I know I will continue to develop this area. I thoroughly enjoyed the course. I would recommend it to any prospective student who may have an interest in Programming, Networks or Engineering. You will have no regrets. I certainly didn’t.

Page 10: Galway Technical Institute - Prospectus 2015

TECHNoLoGY - DESIGN & ENGINEERINGConstruction & Engineering sectors are set to experience a significant skills shortage over the coming years following a number of years of decline. An expert teaching approach and state-of-the-art facilities will guide you to a successful future career. GTI has “learn by doing” at its core and you will learn cutting edge skills in order to realise your professional potential.

STUDENT TESTIMoNIALJENS KoSAK: FURNITURE DESIGN

When I started the Furniture Design course at Galway Technical Institute I did not know much about furniture at all. The course gave me a great introduction to woodworking, covering many aspects from sharpening hand tools to woodturning. It is a hands-on course with much time dedicated to workshop use and the manufacturing and restoring of furniture. The theoretical part was not neglected either. Irish furniture history, coupled with a visit to Bunratty Folk Park, was a highlight of the year. Communications, Computer Aided Drawing and Art classes are part of the curriculum and are a good preparation for further studies. After finishing the course in Galway it seemed quite natural to continue studying in GMIT Letterfrack, which was not such a big step up since my time at GTI prepared me well for it.

STUDENT TESTIMoNIALKELVIN MoRAN; JoURNALISM/RADIo

In September 2010 I began my study as a Journalism student in Galway Technical Institute. I began the year with a sole interest in press journalism, only hoping to improve my writing style and technique. By May of the following year I had learned so much more. I have had articles published in multiple newspapers, magazines and websites, as well as having a column on the GTI Gazette website, which we founded that same year. My interests quickly broadened into radio presenting, production and sound engineering, all of which have since proven to be invaluable assets to me in my career.

After my year at GTI, I was accepted into the Liberal Arts course in Mary Immaculate College, Limerick. I continued my studies in Media & Communications and English. I am now a third year student on Erasmus in Łódź, Poland. None of these opportunities would have been available to me had it not been for Galway Technical Institute.

FIoNA DALY: SoUND PRoDUCTIoN

Last year I studied the Level 5 Sound Production course in GTI. I would recommend it to anyone interested in live sound, recorded sound or radio production. GTI uses top of the range sound equipment: Apple Mac computers installed with Ableton and Logic Pro software. I studied a range of different modules from Music Technology and Radio Production to Health and Safety and Multimedia Authoring. I also learned how to use software like Final Cut and Photoshop. Last year as part of my Work Experience module, I was involved in GTI Radio. As a result of this, I am now working part-time in Galway Bay FM as a Sound Engineer.

LISA BoLToN: TV AND FILM PRoDUCTIoN

GTI gave me the opportunity to gain the practical skills which have allowed me to make a career in the film industry. The technical skills I learned at GTI have been invaluable and I still occasionally refer to class notes! I owe my current career to the foundation training I received at GTI. Since leaving GTI I have completed an MA in Film Making at Kingston University in London. I now work as an Assistant Producer for the sister companies Lost Eye Films and London Music Video. I also run my own independent production company (Room 12Productions named after the classroom in GTI) I produce / direct short films and music videos. Our latest music video recently won the London 48 Hour Music Video award 2012 and will be London’s representative Music Video in the International 48 Hour Music Video Competition in Los Angeles in March.

During the year you will get to work with professional artists and designers through work experience opportunities and participate in live projects developed in house. Experienced staff will guide you towards the area of art and design best suited to your individual strengths and abilities. STUDENT TESTIMoNIALJESSICA ARMSTRoNG: ART PoRTFoLIo PREPARATIoN

My foundation year in GTI was the perfect stepping-stone from Leaving Certificate Art to studying Fine Art (Intermedia) Edinburgh University. The space, time and support from teachers with huge experience in the arts was superb. If Ireland is going to have any contemporary artists in the future it needs GTI as a place for youth to find their feet in the creative world.

NIAMH GIBBoNS: DRAWING AND VISUAL INQUIRY

I would not be in college today if it were not for the course I took in GTI. The course gave me confidence in myself and my own work which helped greatly in returning to higher education. The amount I learned in one year at GTI in comparison to my degree, still shocks me! I really don’t think I would have made it through the first year of art practice were it not for my earlier studies in art history and research skills. The level of help from the teaching staff really made the difference too. Regular feedback, tutorials and a lot of reassurance made the end goal achievable. The practical skills, lessons as well as friends I made at GTI, are still with me today.

STUDENT TESTIMoNIALLAURA JAYNE HALToN: FASHIoN DESIGN

The GTI Fashion Design Course gave me the platform to pursue my passion for luxury fashion design and the confidence to begin building my own brand and label. During my year at GTI, I was a finalist in the Student Designer category at the Golden Egg Fashion Innovation Awards. In addition, I was the winner of the “One to Watch” in association with Image Magazine and one of 9 finalists in the country selected to show at the Peroni Moda Awards at the Powerscourt Centre in Dublin. I am building my brand with confidence since I attended GTI. A highlight of my career was being asked to design a dress for the Oscars 2013.

STUDENT TESTIMoNIALNATASHA RICHARDSoN: HAIRDRESSING

The time I spent in Galway Technical Institute gave me the key skills for the Hairdressing Industry. The teachers are amazing and I believe they gave me the confidence and knowledge to strive forward in my chosen area and become the Hairdresser I am today. I am now self-employed. Even though I still provide Freelance Hairdressing Services to clients, I now work mainly on Photo-shoots. This involves styling the hair for publications, promotion and TV. During my time at Galway Technical Institute I was able to take part in numerous extracurricular activities such as Open Days, Fashion Shows and Hair Dressing competitions.

HELEN GERAGHTY: BEAUTY THERAPY

GTI offers courses that help students prepare for the real working world as many of the courses require students to complete a work experience module. This helps students to gain hands on experience. It is a friendly college where the teachers help students as much as possible with the work on the course.

On the Beauty Therapy course you get to complete work experience in GTI’s Poise Salon and also out-of-house work experience in a salon or spa. This really helped me with improving my confidence with clients and to practice the treatments for the practical exams. The small class groups helped me to get to know my classmates and it gives the teachers a chance to help everyone. There are a lot of practical classes in the course which made it a lot more interesting for me.

The college advises on the many career choices after the Beauty Therapy course such as cruise ships, salons and spas.

STUDENT TESTIMoNIALSANDRA SHoER: APPLIED SoCIAL STUDIES

I knew that I wanted to study in the area of social care but I was unsure of the course I wanted to do as this area is so broad. I wanted to know something about Social Studies before I planned on dedicating the next four years of my life to it. I found the course to be more than I expected as the help and support I received throughout the year from my lecturers in GTI was amazing. The course also offered me hands on experience in this area of social care through my work placement which I found to be of huge benefit. This course was a great stepping stone to third level college on a level 8 course in NUIG Galway where I am continuing my studies in Sociology and Psychology through Arts. TIMMY CARPENTER: HEALTH CARE ASSISTANT

I attended GTI when my work situation changed. It had been over 20 years since I was in college. I have to say that the support I got was top class and the staff really cares for its students. I have been in full time work in a busy nursing home since I finished the course. The work brings me great job satisfaction. I acquired the communication and care skills necessary to work with older people. HIQA and the HSE are actively involved in the vigilant selection of all care workers to ensure they hold this valuable qualification in order to work in healthcare settings.

CIARA BURKE: NURSING STUDIES

I was unsure of what I wanted to do with my life, but nursing was always in the back of my mind. The Nursing Studies course in GTI seemed like a brilliant idea to see what working as a nurse would be like, so I applied. It was the best decision of my life, as it cemented the idea of nursing as the career for me. The guidance from the tutors was unparalleled, as they encouraged us to work hard without being overbearing – they often felt more like friends to me. The course itself was both challenging and intellectually stimulating. We covered a vast variety of subjects within the course but my favourite was the hands on placement in the hospital. It was this work experience that was the most beneficial to me and now I know that I’ll really enjoy nursing for life! It is as a direct result of this course at GTI that I am now studying for my nursing degree at Edge Hill University near Liverpool city.

GTI was definitely a step in the right direction for me. During my time here I have learned so much, from improving my knowledge in the classroom to perfecting skills in the gym. One of the biggest highlights was getting the opportunity to undertake work experience in Glasgow. Overall this course really helped and guided me towards my career in the sporting industry, enhancing my skills in more ways than one. I am very grateful to GTI for giving me the opportunity to further continue my studies at the University of Bolton, Manchester, where I am currently a second year student, studying Sports Rehabilitation. Without the help of my teachers at GTI I would not be where I am today.

PATRICK HoBAN

I spent two valuable years of my life at GTI. I completed the Level 5 Soccer Skills programme in 2010 and Level 6 in 2012. During 2011 I played for Bristol City soccer club. It is as a direct result of these two programmes that I am doing what I love best today and that is playing soccer.

Currently I play for Dundalk FC Airtricity League Premier Division in Centre Forward position – number 9. Both programmes at GTI helped me to develop my soccer skills to a professional capacity so that I could progress to where I am now. The tutors I had really helped me to pursue my soccer career. The Sports Psychology and Sports Nutrition modules gave me a better understanding of how to look after my needs and believe in myself more. At GTI, I played for the GTI team and Mervue United in the League of Ireland. I was awarded Player of the Month in July 2013 in the League. I was a nominee for Young Player of the Year 2013 and Galway Bay FM Sports Person of the Year. GTI helped me gain the self-confidence, skills and knowledge in order for me to achieve all this to date.
