When one comes to college, there are different sights andsounds to distract one from their ultimate goal at the post-highschool leveland it is the jobofsophomores tohelpguide thosealongthewayandshinealightonthepathahead.
NortheastLadyTiger guardTiffanyMartin, ofOliveBranchandTigerforwardTyrieBerry,ofRipleyhavetakenthatguidinglighttoanewlevelwiththeirchosenprofessionsafterbasketball.
WhilebothareconcentratingonphysicaleducationatNorth-east,MartinhasasecondarytrackofwantingtobeamathematicsteacherwhenherplayingcareerisdonewhileBerryismoreofananimallover,planningtobecomeaveterinarytechnicianfollow-
inghisbasketballdays.“When Iget to theDivision
I side, I justwant to be a vet-erinary technician,”Berrysaid.“Ijustloveanimals…dogs,andthe environment. I ammoreofa people person but whatevercomesmyway,Iwilltakeit.”
However, as sophomoresMartin and Berry know thatthere is one thing that needstobe takencareofbefore theyleave the Northeast campus…thefreshmen.
Martin is a true sophomorewhileBerryisbackforhisthirdyear with the Tigers after suf-fering a lower extremity injuryduring the 2010-11 preseasonandhavingtositoutfortheen-tireyearlastyear.
“It’saleadershiprole,”Mar-tin said. “We have to help (the freshmen) with getting to theirclassesandtheirhomework.Beingasophomoreisabigrole.”
BerryechoedMartin’sstatementandinhisthirdyearatNorth-east,Berryhasfoundtimetoappreciatethethingsheoverlookedasafreshman.
“Ihaveenjoyedeverything…theteachers, students, thegamesand the overall environment,” Berry said. “Northeast has beengreat.Thepeopleareverynice.Thegamesarevery,veryintense.Ithasbeenquiteatime.”
For bothBerry andMartin, their time atNortheast cameviatheir families. Both Martin’s mother and father are NortheastalumniwhileBerrywasswayedwithapersonalvisitfromNorth-eastheadmen’sbasketballcoachDavidRobbins.
“It’safamily-orientedschool,”Martinsaid.“BothmymomanddadwenthereandI’vebeenplayingAAUheremostofmylife.”
“Ihadreallybeen thinkingaboutcoming toNortheast,”Ber-rysaid.“IhadavisitbyDavidRobbinsand itwasasurprisingthoughtthatIwouldbeplayingatNortheast.”
It’s those littlemoments in life thathavehelpedbothMartinandBerryenjoytheir timeatNortheast.Whiletheirfirstyear(s)inBoonevillewereusedtoorientatethemselveswiththecampus,
astheseasonschangedsodidthematuritylevelineachandbothhaveseenthingstheydidnotnoticeasfreshmen.
“I go and enjoymy time,”Martin said. “I like to hangwithfriendsandgo toevents around school like theplays, dances…whatevertheschooloffersandmakenewfriends.”
“Itrytogetmorerestandbalancemytimewithschool,workandbasketball,”Berrysaid.“I’vebeentryingtohavemorefunandstayhealthierwiththeweather.Itisactuallymoreresponsibility.”
Whilegrowingupisnormalforanycollegestudentawayfromtheirparents,BerryandMartinhavealsohadtogrowuponthebasketballcourtaswellandarelookedupontoleadtheTigersandLadyTigers,respectively.
Martin and her teammatesspend time together beforegamesjusttryingtorelax.
“We are dancing and crack-ingjokes,”Martinsaid.“Wearejusttryingtogeteveryoneoutoftheir‘Goosebump’stage.”
Berry, a 6-6 forward, is try-ingtofocusononethingduringhislastseasonwiththeTigers.
“Rightnow,wearetakingitday-by-dayandworkingonourfaultstogetbetter,”Berrysaid.“That’swhatisinfrontofus…we need to be prepared, staymentally focusedandnot jumpofftrack.”
Berry, a 5-5 point guard,knowsthatwithhersophomorestatus comesmore responsibil-ity under first-year head coachBrianAlexander.
“It’salotofpressuretotellpeoplewheretogoandtounder-standtheplays,”Martinsaid.“I’vebeenapointguardallofmylifesoIamusedtoit.Peoplelookuptoyou.”
Asapointguard,MartinisthemainpersoninchargeofrunningtheLadyTigersoffense.
“Youhavetobepatient,seethefloorandknowwhentogivetheballtotherightpersonattherighttime,”Martinsaid.
Berry said that it is theNortheast culture that helpshimandtheTigerbasketballteamsucceedespeciallycomingoffaninjury.
“Everyoneheregavemecourage,”Berrysaid.“Thecoaches,myteammatesandformerteammates.Ienjoymytimehereandamlookingforwardtomyfuture.”
However,MartinandBerryknowthattosucceedeachplayerhastodotheirownpart.
“Wearetryingtostayinthetopfourandhaveachancetoplayforaring,”Martinsaid.“(Ourteam)wantsaring.Wearetryingtogetbetterandinaspottogetthatring.”
