President’s Message
Thanks to all of you who made it out to the Head
Over Heels pruning event at the gardens. Your
hard work and dedication will pay big dividends
in the weeks to come. The entire garden was
pruned!
Plans and preparations for the 61st annual
Birmingham Rose Show is underway.
I am glad to announce that Charles Prince will be
co-chairing the show with me this year. Please
join me in welcoming him to the Rose Show
team. He, like so many of you, works hard each
year to make the rose show a success.
Ad Sales and Award donations are always an
area of need and this year is no exception.
Ad sales are slow and we need your support to
make this show a financial success. Please sell an
ad or purchase one in memory/honor of a loved
one.
My beautiful bride is the ad chairman this year. If
you have questions or need to place an ad, give
her a call 205-835-3254. Deadline for ad
placement is April 1, 2013.
At the request of ARS President Jolene Adams, I
was asked to share with the Board about my
weekly podcasts on growing roses at the Spring
Board of Directors Meeting. It was great to meet
all the national leaders and past and future ARS
Presidents. They were all excited to hear about
the program. Listen to any previous broadcast:

Our very own Jim Callaway will be our speaker
this month! I hope you’ll all come out and support
Jim. He always has an interesting presentation.
We’ll see you at the gardens!

March 2013
MARCH IS THE MOST IMPORTANT MONTH OF THE YEAR FOR ROSE CARE. IT WILL DETERMINE HOW WELL YOUR ROSES PERFORM IN THE YEAR 2013. THE FOLLOWING ARE STEPS I HAVE USED IN MY ROSE GARDEN OVER THE YEARS.
1- SPRING CLEAN UP OF ROSE BEDS AND THE
ROSE PLANTS: REMOVE ALL LAST YEAR
FOLIAGE OF THE ROSES. CLEAN OUT YOUR
ROSE BEDS OF ALL OLD FOLIAGE, WEEDS, AND
ANY OTHER ITEMS THAT NEED TO BE
REMOVED.ADD SOIL AND DO ANY REPAIRS TO
THE ROSE BEDS IF NEEDED.
2- PRUNE ALL ROSES FOR SPRING GROWTH AND
BLOOMS.
3- CHECK OUT YOUR WATERING SYSTEM, IF YOU
HAVE ONE, TO MAKE SURE IT IS IN WORKING
ORDER. INSTALL A RAIN GAUGE TO KEEEP UP
WITH THE AMOUNT OF WATER YOU RECEIVE
FROM A RAIN. ON THE AVERAGE ROSES
REQUIRE ONE INCH OF WATER PER WEEK
4- ADD MULCH IF YOUR ROSE BED NEEDS IT.
MULCH NEEDS TO BE TWO INCHES THICK FOR
WEED CONTROL AND TO CONSERVE WATER.
5- DETERMINE WHAT INTEGRATED PEST
MANAGEMENT PROGRAM YOU WILL USE THIS
COMING YEAR [ SPRAY PROGRAM ] AND BEGIN
SPRAYING YOUR ROSES AFTER YOU FINISH
PRUNING.
6- SAFTY IS A MUST WHEN YOU SPRAY YOUR
ROSES. LONG SLEEVE SHIRT, LONG PANTS.
HAT, CHEMICAL RESISTENT GLOVES,
RESPIRATOR AND SPLASH PROOF GOGGLES
ARE A MUST. ALWAYS SPRAY DOWN WIND
AND ALWAYS BE CAREFUL WHEN HANDLING
YOUR SPRAY MATERIALS.
7- I HAVE ABOUT TWO HUNDRED ROSES AND I
USE THE FOLLOWING SPRAY MATERIALS YOU
MUST ALWAYS FOLLOW THE LABEL LISTED ON
THE SPRAY FOR SPRAY QUANTITY AND USE.
8- FUNGICIDES: I USE BANNER MAX MIXED WITH
LIQUID MANZEB EVERY TEN DAYS TO TWO
WEEKS DURING THE GROWING SEASON.
9- INSECTICIDES: I USE 97% ORTHENE ON MY
ROSES FOR THE CONTROL OF APHIDS, THRIPS
AND OTHER COMMON INSECTS.
10- IF YOU HAVE FIFTY ROSES OR LESS YOU CAN
USE ORTHO ROSE PRIDE EVERY WEEK FOR YOUR
FUNGICIDE AND THE OTHER SPRAY MATERIAL
AS LISTED ABOVE
11- FOR A GOOD REFERENCE FOR SPRAY
MATERIALS AND HOW TO USE THEM AND ROSE
CARE PRODUCTS GO TO ROSEMANIA.COM
12- I WILL FERTILIZE MY ROSES AROUND MARCH
26, 2013. I WILL USE HALF AND HALF 15-5-10
WITH TRACE ELEMENTS AND HIGH NITROGEN
35-0-0 WITH SULFUR. I WILL BROAD CAST THIS
MIX ALL OVER MY ENTIRE ROSE BEDS. I WILL
ALSO SPREAD A LIGHT COAT OF EPSOM SALT
OVER THE BEDS TO ENCOURAGE BASAL BREAKS
. THE 15-5-10 AND 35-0-0 ARE AVAILABLE AT
THE CO-OP IN PELHAM ALABAMA.
13- I WILL BE GLAD TO ANSWER ANY QUESTION
ANY ONE MAY HAVE AT THE MARCH MEETING.
HAVE FUN AND GROW GREAT ROSES AND
ENTER THEM IN THE MAY ROSE SHOW.

Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the
Birmingham Rose Society February 25, 2013
6:30 P.M.
Chris VanCleave, President called the meeting to
order. We had thirty-three members, one guest
and three visitors attending the meeting. The
hostesses, Brenda Bodine, Nora Coffee and Tina
VanCleave were thanked for providing
refreshments for the evening.
The minutes from the January 28th meeting were
approved as printed in the February Garden Faces
newsletter.
Hyacinth Prince gave the treasurer’s report. As of
February 25, 2013 the checking account balance is
$3,273.61 and the CD balance is unchanged at
$5,073.01.
Robert Eskew reported on the Plant Sale that will
be held April 4-7, 2013. The sale site this year will
be at the old Century Plaza where the JC Penny
store was located. The most needy time for
volunteers is on Friday and Saturday. He asked
that everyone who could volunteer time during the
four-day sale please sign up. This is the second
largest moneymaker for the Birmingham
Botanical Gardens.
Pruning the rose garden for the Rose Show will
take place March 2nd
starting at 8:00 am. Plan to
stay to the finish. The garden is short of help and
all volunteers are needed. Bring your tools and
help get the rose garden looking its best. Pruning
will take place rain or shine.
Renewal forms are available for the new member
directory. Please make sure your information is
correct. Tina VanCleave is in charge of the
directory. Let her know of any changes or
corrections.
The 61st Rose Show will be held May 11- 12,
2013. Hyacinth Prince asked for donations for
awards. If you would like to recycle your awards,
she will be happy to pick them up or you can bring
them to the next meeting. Chris VanCleave will be
chairman of the Rose Show and needs a co-
chairman. Ad sales help pay for the Rose
Show. Everyone needs to sell an ad. The price is
$40.00 for a quarter page ad up to $175.00 for a full-
page ad. April 1st is the deadline for ads in order to get
the program booklet to the judges.
We have been asked to host the Deep South District
Fall Rose Show the third weekend in October.
Sharon Bamberg, Program Chairman introduced
Katelyn Mitchell from Hanna’s Garden Shop. Katelyn
gave everyone the 2013 rose list from Hanna’s. She
had a display of products used to maintain beautiful
roses. The 2012 roses are buy one get one for $5.00 for
rose society members. Take your rose list to show you
were at the meeting tonight. Her presentation was very
informative.
Jim Callaway will be our speaker at the March 25th
meeting.
Door prize winners this evening were Shirley Bollen
who won an Old Blush rose, and Becky Henderson,
who won a Joseph’s Coat rose.
The meeting was adjourned at 7:55 P.M.
