    Installing Batteries and LanyardThe eTrex operates on two AA batteries (not

    inclue). You can use Alkaline or NiMH batteries.

    To install the batteries:1. Removethebatterycoverbyturningthe

    Lockingringcounter-clockwiseandpullingout.2. Insertthebatteries,observingtheproper

    polarity.

    Remove the batteries if the unit is not being use for

    several months. Store ata is not lost when batteries

    are remove.

    To install the lanyard:1. Removethebatterycoverandplacetheloopof

    thelanyardthroughtheslotinthebaseofthe

    unit.

    Operating the eTrexUnderstanding TermsSelectmove the highlighte area on the screen up

    or own, using the Up an DoWN keys to selectiniviual fiels.

    Keywhen you are irecte to press a key, press an

    quickly release the key.

    Fieldthe location on a page where ata or an option

    can be shown or entere.

    Scrll barwhen viewing a list of items too long to

    appear on the screen, a scroll bar appears next to the

    list. To scroll through a list, press the Up orDoWN

    keys.

    Defaultthe factory setting save in the units

    memory. You can change the settings, but you can

    revert to the factory settings when you select RestreDefaults.

    Manual ConventionsIn this manual, when you are instructe to select

    an item, small arrows (>) appear in the text. They

    inicate that you shoul select a series of items on

    the screen using the Up orDoWN keys, an press

    ENTERafter each item. For example, if you see

    select TRACKS > SETUp >, you shoul highlight

    Turning on the eTrexWhen you turn on the eTrex, the SkyView page

    appears, followe by a REAdY TO NAVIGATE

    message after the unit has collecte enough satellite

    ata to establish its current location (initialize).

    To turn the eTrex on and off:1. PressandholdPOWER.Whentheunitturns

    The Map page shows where you are locate, an as

    you travel, the animated gure leaves a track log. The

    map also shows waypoint names an symbols.

    The eTrex is set to automatically rotate the map as

    you move, so waypoints that are ahea of you are

    always isplaye in front of the animate figure. The

    map orientation is shown in the upper left corner.

    To increase the map scale, press Up. This shows more

    area in less etail. To ecrease the map scale, press

    DoWN. This shows less area with more etail.

    Map Page Optionsorient Ma Ahead/Nrthwardswhen

    AHEAd is selecte, the top of the map isoriente in the irection you are currently

    moving, an a figure icon inicates your current

    position. When NORTHWARdS is selecte,

    the map is always oriente to the north, an

    your current position is inicate by a irection

    arrow.

    automatically ajusts its scale to isplay your

    entire route. When it is off, press Up orDoWN

    to select a map scale.

    the GOTO function, use this option to show a

    course line or bearing line to your estination.

    A course line is fixe from your starting

    location, while a bearing line changes base on

    your current location.

    The Pointer page helps guie you to a estination.

    When navigating towars a estination, the Pointer

    page shows the name, the istance, time to go, an a

    irection arrow in the compass ring.

    The compass ring reflects your heaing (irection

    of movement). To navigate, walk in the irection the

    arrow is pointing. When the arrow is pointing at the

    moving irection line, your estination is ahea.

    NoTE: The eTrex is not a magnetic

    compass. You must be moving for the unit to

    etermine your heaing.

    Press Up orDoWN to cycle through the trip

    information at the bottom of the page.

    Pointer Page Options

    Reset Max Seedresets the Maximum Speeachieve uring a trip.

    Reset Triresets the trip time, trip istance

    (oometer), an average spee back to zero.

    St Navigatinstops any active navigation.

    If you o not have a GOTO or route activate,

    this option is not available.To select a Pointer Page option:1.FromthePointerpage,pressENTER.

    Trip Computer PageThe Trip Computer page contains five ata fiels to

    show travel information.

    The Trip Computer Page

    Selectabledata felds

    Customize these five fiels to show information from

    a list of ata fiels.

    Trip Computer Page OptionsChange Fieldsuse the CHANGE FIELdS

    option to select the ata to be isplaye from a

    list of ata fiels.

    To change the felds:1. FromtheTripComputerpage,pressENTER.

    2. SelectCHANGE FIELDS>ENTER.

    3. Select the eld to change > ENTER.

    5. RepeatSteps3and4,asnecessary.

    To change the time zone:1.PressPAGEtoswitchtotheMenupage.Select

    4.Scrollthroughtheselections.PressENTER,whenyouhavefoundyourcorrecttimezone.

    information from a computer to the eTrex an back

    again, manage, an organize your waypoints.

    Mark Waypoint PageUse the Mark Waypoint page to create a waypoint at

    your current location or at a location you enter in the

    position fiel.

    To mark a waypoint: PressPAGEtoswitchtotheMenupage.

    PressUPorDOWNtohighlightMARK.PressENTER.

    NoTE: The unit must state REAdY TO

    NAVIGATE before you can mark a waypoint.

    To change the symbol:1.FromtheMarkWaypointpage,selectthe

    waypointsymbol(abovethewaypointname)>ENTER.

    Hunt & Fish PageThe Hunt an Fish page lists best times for hunting

    and shing for a chosen location (waypoint) and date.

    To view the Hunt /Fish Page: OntheReviewWaypointpage,selectHUNT/

    FISH>ENTER.

    The ata provie reflects best times for the current

    ate an at the location of the waypoint unless you

    enter a new ate in the date fiel.

    Sun/Moon PageThe Sun/Moon page shows both sun an moon set

    an rise times for a chosen location an ate. This

    option is locate at the bottom of the Hunt/Fish page.

    To view the Sun/Moon Page:1.OntheHunt/Fishpage,selectSUN/MOON>

    ENTERtoviewtheSun/Moonpage.

    2. ViewtheSunriseandSunsetTimes,Moonrise,

    andMoonsetTimes,aswellastheMoon

    Phase,forthewaypointlocationanddate.

    3. Youcansetthedateatwhichyouwanttoviewthesunandmoonposition(ifotherthan

    current) by entering the date in the Date eld.

    4. ReturntotheHunt/FishpagebyselectingtheHUNT/FISHoptionatthebottomofthepage>ENTER.

    ProjectUse the Project feature to create a new waypoint at

    a specied distance and bearing, using an existing

    waypoint as a reference. Change the name, symbol,

    an elevation of the new waypoint on this page.

    savethewaypointandbegindirectnavigationtothepoint.

    Routes PageNavigate using one of three methos: GOTO

    TracBack, an Routes.

    The Routes feature guides you from the rst waypoint

    in the route to each successive waypoint to your nal

    estination.

    The Routes feature an the GOTO feature both guie

    you to estination waypoints. However, the Routes

    feature is more useful for navigating to multiple

    points along a path. When you reach one waypoint,

    you are irecte to the next waypoint on the route.

    To create a route, select waypoints from the waypoint

    list an place them into a route in the sequence that

    you want to navigate to them. You nee at least two

    waypoints (up to a maximum of 125) linke together

    to form a route. Create an store up to 20 iniviual

    routes. Save routes are automatically name base

    on the rst and last waypoints in the route. Saved

    routes are liste on the Routes page, with an arrow

    inicating which route is currently active.

    Activate the Routes feature an the receiver begins

    navigation toward the rst waypoint in the route. Use

    the Pointer page to provie steering guiance.

    To create a route:1.ChooseROUTEontheMenupage,then

    selectNEW ROUTE>ENTER.Anemptyroute

    page appears with the rst eld of the route

    highlighted.

    2.PressENTER.

    3.Selectthewaypointofyourchoice>ENTER.

    The waypoint you selected is placed in the rst

    eld of the route, and the second eld of therouteishighlighted.

    4.RepeatSteps23untilallofthewaypointsare

    enteredintotheroute.

    5.Afteryouhaveenteredallthewaypointsinto

    yourroute,pressPAGE.Yournewrouteis

    savedanddisplayedontheRoutespage.

    NoTE: You can also plan a route using

    Garmin MapSource on a computer an

    uploa the route to the eTrex. See your

    Garmin ealer for more information on

    using MapSource (MapSource is an optional

    accessory an is not inclue with the

    eTrex H).

    To activate a route:1.FromtheRoutespage,selecttheroutethatyou

    wanttofollow>ENTER.

    2. SelectFOLLOW >ENTER.Youareprompted

    toselectthedestinationwaypoint.

    3. Selectadestinationwaypoint>ENTER.The

    eTrex assumes you are at the rst point in theroute,andthePointerpageappearsgivingyou

    guidancetothenextwaypointintheroutelist.

    Editing a Route

    To insert a waypoint into a route:1.PressPAGEandswitchtotheMenupage.

    SelectROUTES>ENTER.

    2 Selectaroute>ENTER.

    3 Selectthewaypointyouwanttoinsertanew

    waypointinfrontof>ENTER.TheInsert/

    Removewindowappears.SelectINSERT>ENTER.

    4. Selectawaypoint>ENTER.

    To remove a waypoint from a route:1.PressPAGEandswitchtotheMenupage.

    SelectROUTES>ENTER.Selectaroute>ENTER.

    2 Selectthewaypointyouwanttoremove.Select

    REMOVE>ENTER.

    To delete a route:1.FromtheMenupage.SelectROUTES>ENTER.Selecttheroute>ENTER.

    2. SelectDELETE>ENTER. The conrmation

    windowappearsaskingyouifyoureallywantto

    deletetheroute.SelectYES>ENTER.

    Tracks PageThe eTrex raws an electronic Track Log on the

    Map page as you travel. The Track Log contains

    information about each point it plots, incluing time

    an position. Review the save Track Log on the map,

    turn recoring on or off, an change the way tracks

    are recore.

    The Track Log starts recoring as soon as the unit

    gets a location fix. Save the current Track Log an

    clear it before you start traveling. The percentage of

    memory use by the current Track Log is isplayeat the top of the Tracks page. When the isplay shows

    99%, it starts overwriting the beginning track points,

    you shoul save the Track Log before it reaches 99%
