Out of town shopping complex approvedLocal residents have been celebrating this week after the long-talked about retail development at St. Helen Auckland was finally approved last Tuesday. The decision however looks to have put an end to a rival town centre expansion near the Newgate Centre.Members of Durham County Council approved plans laid out by Metric Properties for six new shops on land near to Tescos and Sainsbury’s, which the developer says will create 91 new jobs on the outskirts of our town. The proposals did not go unchallenged however, and campaigners against the development said that town centres should be prioritised for rede-velopment, pointing to the Newgate Shopping

Centre and land on the former bus station site at North Bondgate as prime candidates.Newgate Centre owners Ravenhill had drawn up plans for an extension and redevelopment of the bus station, but they have had to be shelved following the out of town approval. Gentoo, the owner of the North Bondgate site also said it was drawing up plans which would be hugely impacted by the out of town development. But residents are delighted that councillors saw “common sense” by approving the scheme and Richard Wilkes from Metric voiced uncertainty over the timescale of Ravenhill’s plans, given that the new site at St.

Helen Auckland could be finished by next Christmas. He also announced that clothing retailer Next was set to move into the new shopping precinct, after shunning other sites in the town. Andy Turner, Councillor for West Auckland, confirmed that residents supported the scheme and that it seemed the logical next step following the approval of the Tesco and Sainsbury supermarket stores. Councillor for Easington, David Boyes, said he heard the same debate when Dalton Park was in its approval process, and there has been no evidence it has effected nearby town centres. He concluded, “It has since become a jewel in the county.”

Two drop-in sessions will give young people a chance to register for a new proof of age card. The Safe Durham Partner-ship’s ID4U scheme is a convenient way for people aged between 14 and 25-years-old, to prove their age when buying certain goods or services without having to carry a driving licence or passport. The sessions will take place at Bishop Auckland College on Saturday 19th November, from 10.30am to 2.30pm and

Free ID at ID4U eventBishop Auckland, Esquire Café in the Newgate Centre, on Tuesday 6th December, from 10am to 2pm.Anyone wishing to sign up for a card will need to take a valid passport, driving licence or PASS accredited card to the drop-in.Alternatively, a ‘verifier’ must complete and sign an application form. Verifiers must be over 25 years-old and know the applicant personally. The applicant will also need to provide a recent photograph and

Residents in the town are being warned by police about a rise in the theft of wheel trims.Officers in Bishop Auckland say they have seen a sharp increase in the number of trims being taken from cars. Neighbourhood Inspector Martin Peace is encourag-ing motorists to use cable ties - which only cost a few pence - as a deterrent.

He said, “By tying plastic around them, it makes it that little bit harder and may well deter them from even trying, as they would have to spend longer at the scene and need to have a knife to cut through it.”Anyone with information on who may be stealing the wheel trims is urged to contact the town’s Beat Team on 0345 60 60 365.

Hundreds have a go as firms give free taster sessions

Mandy Hepperle tried her hand at tiling with Ian Dobson of the Mobile Tile Company.

Employers from across County Durham offered free taster sessions at an event recently, which attracted over 750 people.Students & workers looking for a career change and the unemployed all turned up to take advantage of the free hour-long introducto-ry workshops run by a wide variety of businesses at Bishop Auckland College’s ‘Have a Go’ day.Twenty firms took part in the event, held at the college’s £32m main campus, which gave par-ticipants the opportunity to not only learn a new skill, but to speak to employers directly and find out firsthand what it is like working in a particular trade or industry. They included unemployed father-of-two Mark Smith, 35, from St Helen Auckland, who took part in taster sessions in bricklay-ing and joinery under the instruction of Mears Group site supervisor Barry Chapman.Mark said, “I came along to have a go and try something new, see what I thought about it, and it’s been very good. It takes a lot of practice to pick it up but I think after today I’ll enrol on a bricklaying course.”Residential care worker Mandy Hepperle, 45, was trying her hand at tiling with Ian Dobson of The Mobile Tile Company. She said, “I came along as I fancied updating my DIY skills, and I’m thinking of

doing a DIY course next year, but this may open up new opportunities for me if I find I’m any good at it.”Ian, who also ran sessions with 14 to 16 year-old students from Tudhoe Grange School, said, “We are looking to expand and may be taking on an apprentice. We’ve seen a couple of really good little tilers today – one or two seemed real naturals. Lots have been putting their

names down for training courses.”Bishop Auckland College Principal Anne Isherwood added, “It has been a fantastic event today, great to see so many people try their hand at new skills. Clearly the employers taking part got as much out of today as the participants, and hopefully today will lead to new opportunities for those who came.”

Local police have voiced their concerns over plans to re-open the Beehive Pub under new name, The Vibe. The bar has been closed since April when Anthony Hancock was killed outside the pub; the second death to have taken place in the vicinity of the premises in the past 2 years.Shaun Bradford is applying to re-open the pub, despite

objections from police, who say the new name of the premises suggests a late night, alcohol-led venue. However Mr Bradford has stated that this is not the case, saying he plans to turn it into a family-orientated venue which serves meals. The police also stated that they were concerned with Mr Bradford’s connection to the previous licensee,

Rachel Rowell, having worked for her at The Beehive since September last year.Sergeant Kelly from Durham Police’s Licensing Unit said, “We have serious concerns as to the level of independence Mr Bradford would have and that, in essence, the Rowell family would still be involved or in control.”
